I also follow a guy called Jaco, a South African and his site is called 'Pennies & Shillings' he also covers the Union series which you just covered and the nickname for the 3d in SA was/ is the TICKEY, Telephone Kiosks had 3d coin slots and thus the 3d became known as a Tickey. I note you comment on the silver content, 80% until 1950 and 50 % until 1960. The UK kept the sterling standard until 1920 and 50% until 1946 Ireland 1st £ s d. issue was 72.5% until 1943 and cupro nickel afterwards Did you notice the farthing was blackened? this was to avoid confusion with the 1/2 Gold Sovereign The UK stopped blackening farthings after 1918 when the gold standard was dropped. SA kept the gold standard for decades longer thus they blackened their farthings for longer (I think up until QE11?) The Blackening process used Sodium Thiosulphate which left a layer of copper sulphate Did they blacken farthings in NZ and AUS? Thanks.

What do the 'bundles of sticks' surrounding the protea flower on the 3 pence and 6 pence coins symbolise, cannot find anything anywhere about it when researching mine.

It was used way before Mussolini. I prefer to think of the Romans in references to the Fasces. US dimes did have it, and it was a wonderful design too. Thanks mate.
I think they're masonic symbols.....it's shocking how much masonic symbolism is being used in symbols of the state,example coat of arms,the flag of, currency design ,monuments and state buildings such as Parliament house,etc...this happens when a countries leadership is heavily masonic as South africas has always been...this of cause is unbeknown to the general public...
