    Personally I don't believe there are any bad fonts by default. Depending on functionality, aesthetics, audience, medium, reason or intention e.t.c, every font fits a particular case. Some might fit well for a majority of daily purposes and some might not. In as much as there are standing rules for good prints, signage, screen e. t. c a good or bad font ends up been a function of purpose and choice. I like your choices though and
    Thanks for introducing some new fonts I don't use but will definitely try. Cheers.

    • @eboethrasher
      @eboethrasher 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kamilaantezana6374 I've been in goth ands and there are some fonts that are naturally curly or curvy that are perfectly acceptable for band logos or album titles, etc. I think the one thing weighing Curlz down is how said curlz are implemented. They are very basic and boring and repetitive, and take no chances. Not very stylistic. Just like the same thing over and over and over. I do like some things that are based on hand done lettering from albums by the Cure, but they are of course based on hand-drawn lettering so they have more individuality by nature than these do.

    I actually do like your choice of typefaces a lot, however I dislike the totalitarian character of the statements "must use" as well as "stay away from".
    Form follows function - you do not pick a typeface to use in a design because it's pretty and fits the layout, but because it supports the goal and function of the layout, and you choose each time anew - and, in that regard, even Comic Sans can have its purpose. To generally rule out or count in a typeface one must or mustn't use is not good design.
    As I said, I do love your choice of 'good' typefaces though, and I like how you introduce them and give additional infos as well

    I hsve been viewing all of yout videos since discovering your channel (love them, by the way). I agree with your selection. I am surprised, however, that Helvetica did not make your list of must haves. True, it may be overused but often with good reason, it just works. Aileron is also interesting. I never quite looked at it from your perspective. There are subtle likenesses from other fonts such as Raleway. The letter "L" for example has that same curvature at the bottom of the stroke but others resemble Helvetica. I'll see about using it in some of my designs.

    • @lavieenlavande
      @lavieenlavande 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Class Graphics I think that Impact can still be useful. I love this channel, but sort of disagree that a font is “bad” because it totally depends on the application of the font-and that’s where you as the designer come in. I find it a pretty good option when I’m using for a more graphic application such as with a pattern fill or mask where I want the outline of the letters to be easily identifiable. I see what he means by the fact that the “bad” fonts might have connections to certain uses and/or been overused, but at the end of the day, fonts convey meaning and there might be appropriate times to keep using them :)

    • @SatoriGraphics
      @SatoriGraphics  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah the font itself isn't actually that bad, it's quite a decent font in retrospect. It's just the label and 'image' that has been given to it in recent years. Many people will see a design with impact one, and in their minds subconsciously or not, they will have a different emotion or feeling given to them, simply because of stigma. Not everyone of course, just internet savvy people

    • @phillip0011
      @phillip0011 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      lavieenlavande Now that I think about it, perhaps I was swayed a little too much by Tom's inclusion of it on his "bad" list and I agree that it is not so much the font itself but the application and environment in which it is used. Also, judging by Tom's follow-up comment, I think he has also slightly softened his position on it.
      I think it's good to have these design discussions from time to time and I very much appreciate your comments!

    • @SatoriGraphics
      @SatoriGraphics  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes typography can be quite a polarising subject, and quite rightly so. I keep emphasising how it can make or break a design, so it is very much important.
      The thing is, you need to consider your audience, and what the font and typeface says in a non verbal manner. I will be looking to go over this in more detail in a forthcoming video, on choosing fonts for your designs

    • @lavieenlavande
      @lavieenlavande 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Class Graphics cool! I’m glad Tom commented, too. I totally agree that audience and purpose play the biggest role in choosing typography. The font you choose has a huge impact (no pun intended) on the readability and how a piece feels. I think Tom had great choices for his top and bottom fonts in the list, but I just wanted to chime in that using a font isn’t bad if it’s the right one for the job so you shouldn’t feel bad about having used it in projects :)

    Brandon Grotesque is such an amazing font. However, the lower case is hard to read when used as the font of a paragraph.

    • @SatoriGraphics
      @SatoriGraphics  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah it can be tricky in that sense, that's for sure.

    • @alanxie3550
      @alanxie3550 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ya, I was trying to use it for everything, and then realised the text was so hard to read because the lower cases have a really tiny bottom portion, they are good for decorative text, but not for reading

    Great video, thanks! Great fonts! Downloaded the good ones. The IPadOS still have the Bradley Hand, Courier New and Papyrus...the Comic-ish is called Chalkboard, probably changed names for keeping us using it looolz.

    Hello Mr Satori, I love this post! One of y main Design professors also loved Sabon (when I think I need beauty I always fall back on it). I can't wait for the chance to use DIN 1451 I never thought about it in the way you demonstrated. **Btw, a new Improved *Helvetica Now* has been released, but I'm kinda burnt out on Helvetica. I try to use fonts I've never used before so I am ecstatic about Aileron, will use. (I've used to Agency cuz I don't see anybody else use it. Thank You

    Your choice of fonts is good but also very standard. And those absolute statements are just wrong. I love using Comic Sans just because everyone hates it. Even people with no design experience hate it because they are told to. The font is actually well made, it has a harmonic appearance in long texts and a good readability, and it works perfect in... comics.
    Courier New is a beautiful font if used cleverly.
    Why does everybody still choose Helvetica? It’s heavily overused and in most cases just a lazy choice.
    I could go on. But my point is - there is no recipe for choosing a font. I’d almost like to say there are no bad fonts just bad typography.

      Courier /Courier New used to the standard for programming IDEs, where you want a monospaced typeface. I also used it for ages, until I replaced it with Consolas. It was only then that I realized how horrible Courier really is 😊

    There are no Bad Fonts.
    Just bad designers.
    A good typographer can read the character of a typeface and know how to leverage that character to help the content shine.
    Every font has it's correct usage, it just takes a discerning eye to decide when the time is right. For the 'bad' fonts, that time is almost never, but it doesn't make them bad.

      Glenn Toddun I challenge you to design something good using Algerian or Curlz. Better yet, use joker!

    • @gtoddun
      @gtoddun 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@benridler268 Algerian could be used as a drop cap in a book to evoke an fin de siecle frame of mind. Curlz could be used playfully in a n invitation to a child's party. Jokeman could be used in a retro 90s colour explosion.
      Easy.
      A good designer like a good craftsman, doesn't blame the tools, they know when and how to use them.

      Sure, but still good. Especially if used in not-Americanadaustralinglandeustchland where it hasn't been used much. Heck, most people either use Calibri, Arial, Times New Roman, or Comic Sans (except in countries where the Latin script isn't used. In which case custom fonts are usually used...

  • @MichaelSouhoka
    @MichaelSouhoka 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I used to change with:
    Bradley Hand > Oregano
    Impact > Bebas Neue or Oswald
    Papyrus > Montserrat
    Courier New > Courier (original) or Source Code Pro or American Typewriter
    Curlz > Lobster or Blenda Script
    Comic Sans > Comic Neue or Tekton
    Monotype Corsiva > Alex Brush or Zapf Chancery
    Brush Script > Playball
    Mistral > Kaushan Script
    Blackoak > Alfa Slab One or Rockwell Extra Bold
    Arial > Helvetica Neue or Roboto or Akzidenz Grotesk
    Gill Sans > Proxima Nova or Myriad or Gotham
    Times New Roman > Minion or Adobe Caslon

  • @heyaaa3506

    fonts create different feels tho. It doesn't matter if its a "bad" or "good" font as long as it translate to the goal or vision of the designer and/or brand. like you dont use Curlz to a business or formal brand....You dont stay away from it, just use it wisely.

    Amazing tutorials bro, I've checked out most of your videos and they are absolutely amazing and easy to understand. And with this video there is one thing I would really like to know, the whole 'negative' colours in the text(the blue and yellow) matching the yellow canvas, how did you manage to get that done, because I once tried it before and ended up with something else.

      I was going to say...
      It's primarily used for albums (Monk and Backstreet famously used the font and those colors for their albums), but the legibility is fine. I'd strike this one from the list

    • @benridler268
      @benridler268 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Totally agree about the legibility. I found myself having to look each letter up and down to figure out what it was. That said, in fairly large print applications, with very strong contrast, I’ve seen it look beautiful and surprisingly legible (I think the designer of the example I’m thinking of edited the type a bit or did something with the tracking or kerning though)
