This device is like a gameboy, it's timeless. We have many new devices in the etrex family and the good old 10 is still in production and pepole still love it!

I have to admit that etrex 10 is really useful.
I've had it for like 2 years now and I had it with me on countless trips.
It never failed me and it always helped me to navigate better than a smartphone.

I have its older version (2008) eTrex H, basically the same really. I often use it in preference to my GPSMAP 62, that I only use at night (good illumination and mapping). But you are spot on, the 10 as well as the H do 90% of what you need. ALSO far easier to read in sunlight (and doesn't suck the battery as it does not need a backlight!).

I just bought this after the LCD screen on my original etrex I used for 20 years started to fade. What an amazing product. If you are on foot with a map and a compass the etrek is perfect and you are good to go!!! This produt is more for people who want to confirm their position, minimise weight, and extend battery life as opposed to someone who wants to follow it for navigational guidance (although it can be used for that, read on).
If you are comfortable navigating with a map and a compass it is perfect. If you do want to use it to guide you, you will need to download a GPS track and you can then follow the arrows, that works well too, but your battery life will be shortened as opposed to turning it on a few time during the day.
For the price and the functionality it is amazing. You won't go wrong. Even if you carry it as a backup.

I have had this GPS for a whe now and love it, it is so simple to use, can download routes from the pc to it also. Also had higher spec GPS like the etrex 30 and yes have other options on it, but what I did not like was how small the maps were on screen you could hardly see anything, might as well not have a map just use your paper map.

I hike and have a 24 ft sailboat. I am going on a long trip next year on the boat and I will navigate by paper charts. I need a simple GPS for a backup Lat/Long if I am unsure of my dead reckoning position. This unit seem to fit the bill. I will buy one soon to practice with.
    Good video.

I have never hated a device as much as hate the Garmin etrex 10. I watched several vids and today I gave it it's final test run. I began attempting to build a relationship with it 3 days ago. I am not computer illiterate and can follow directions. Today was day 3 of trouble. I tracked with it and stopped at mile 1. The Garmin recorded i had walker 1 95 miles when in reality I walked only 1 mile. I set in on Tracback and the arrow indicated I was traveling back in the correct direction. The arrow stayed put and I was back to my car with the arrow holding fast just a hair below where I had begun my jouney back. AS far as this piece of junk was concerned I had barely mored. I know it has good reviews but this was day 3 of mega frustration with this device. It was never accurate by any stretch of the imagination. I destroyed so that I will never waste another minute of my time with it. I even installed new batteries in it to be certain if would function. I had attempted working with it a while back an put it away after getting the same results. No chance of this happening again. Back to map and compass!

Thanks for an outstanding video! I've been mulling over whether I need to higher end GPS unit like a Montana or GPSMAP 64 or if I could skate by with an eTrex 10. Mostly I want a GPS unit to output UTM coordinates to use with paper maps. It seems like the 10 would be enough. On the other hand the eTrex 30x is only $40 more. Decisions, decisions!
