- Lyle Brotherton, navigator extraordinaire and author of The Ultimate Navigation Manual shows how to log a waypoint on a satnav and then easily navigate back to that point.
Today is March 17, 2024 and I just found this video from Savannah Georgia USA.
Very good instructions and great information.
Also, beautiful countryside there!
Excellent. clear concise and to the point. trust a Brit to not mess about and get right to the point and no stupid adverts on the screen. Thanks, i got exactly what i needed from this.
There are alot of so called TH-camrs' that could learn from this guy.
Thanks again.
This guy is indeed so talented in his presentation. If only all teachers and lecturers were like this. Thank God he didn't film this in vertical like so many of these pea-brained millennial nerds are doing here on TH-cam. We, those with a brain, should be downvoting and not watching anything filmed in vertical. I routinely downvote anything filmed in vertical, leave a derogatory comment, skip it and request no more recommendations from the channel. "Say no to vertical video and ban it from TH-cam!" Back to topic: The Etrex is a superb device and no serious outdoor person should be without one.
I love your presentation on the Garmin GPS E Track you did a great job in explaining this unit what a valuable tool to have thank you you should be on television being some kind of an announcer you have a great voice for Broadcasting
Thank you for making sense of something fairly simple that everyone else wants to keep complicated.
Best presentation that I`ve followed! Clear, precise!
Thanks Lyle for making the waypoint training so simple for us "ELDERLY" folks!!! It's appreciated!
Was just thinking the same thing, very well explained
Thanks from someone who is old school and not tech savvy but getting a bit of a hold on it now. People should understand that no matter who and what we are and what age we are, we are all beginners on different subjects and always will be. We come here to learn and so should be taken as novices. I certainly am. Thanks for the simple language.

I bought my first GPS unit this past week and this video was super helpful in understanding the basics of waypoints. Thank you! I bought a Garmin Montana 680t.
how can I get one, some one help me
This guy is a natural teacher.....
it marks your location . Gives your reference point to return to.
His book on advanced navigation is well worth a read. Highly professional guy who really knows his subject.
Thanks for the recommendation Pen Man! For anyone interested, our book can be purchased on our website: shavenraspberry.com/shop/navigation-aids/the-ultimate-navigation-manual/
Excellent primer on using these things. One of the best I've seen. Clear and concise. Only improvement might be screenshot pop ups of GPS on the side as you are explaining things. I remember being blown away at what GPS tech can do years ago. It was a Magellan 2000 that could barely get a sat lock. I did as you said, dropped a waypoint in Google Earth and saw the spot I'd marked. I always have a compass when out, but now a Garmin of some sort is always my main nav tool.
Thank you Lyle for this excellent straighforward explaination and demonstration of GPS waypoints. Your teaching style is brilliant. More videos please!
Excellent video. The best I've seen on this topic. Thanks much for putting it together!
Thanks Mark. We are in the process of recording a whole load of new videos which will be uploaded to our TH-cam channel very soon. First film available within the next few weeks.
In the meantime, please subscribe to our channel to be informed when the videos go up.
Excellent video. You are a very natural and effective teacher.
I would like to point out a common misconception that is related in the video at 3:25. A GPS receiver does not get azimuth (direction) information from a satellite. It only gets one thing: it's distance from the satellite. Given distance from a single satellite, all we can deduce is that we're somewhere on a sphere around that satellite. With distance from a second satellite, we know we're somewhere on the circle that forms the intersection of two spheres. With a third satellite (and sphere) we know we're at one of only two points where the three spheres intersect, and only one of those two points will be on the surface of the earth (which forms a fourth sphere).
By far this is the best instruction video that I need. Thank you very much.
Cheers from Indonesia!
Best instructional GPS video yet...thx
Lyn Borden very nice and concise video. Thank you
Excellent video with good clear instructions.....A pen on a paper map...Oh My God!
Thankyou that’s the first time I understood a garment gps and the advantages over a mobile phone I now looking at buying one for hiking on the moors in bad weather
😂😂😂😂😂 this guy is quality it’s like watching Alan partridge 😂😂😂😂 but very interesting also 👍👍
Thanks so much for this mate! Really easy to understand and great demonstration!
Thank for your videos, they're very very well constructed and informative. I use this model of GPS for geotagging my photo work and for navigation. I've learned a lot of very useful information from these videos. Best wishes, Leigh
Very well done. Excellent teaching methods.
Thank you very much
Great video Lyle , your teaching style is very helpfull .
Still relevant content because I was just given a GPS that still works it’s almost new of this vintage
thank you Lyle, it really helps, i have gained something from your video.
hope you will share more.
AMAZING...THAT WILL HELP ME A LOT SAILING FROM FLORIDA TO ST MARTEEN...THANKS A LOT LYLE !
good morning, can some one help me to get one
What a great communicator!!!
Great easy-to-understand explanation. Crunchie Bahhhh!
Really helpful vid and brilliant teaching style. Lots learned including 45deg head height holding position and the 1.5metre move to get accurate compass reading. Nice👍🏻
Thank you very much,I'm buying the one you have for treasure hunting with my grand daughter .
One of the best videos on the subject
Great video and well-presented. Thank you for explaining waypoints for navigation in a simple, concise manner. Cheers :-)
Sir your form sir
Good teacher and very clear. I have learned something. Thank you ! :)
Fantastic tutorial. Made waypoints easy to use
Thanks Lyle good information for a novice like me: got to go outside now and try it out.
So clear and easy to use!
Then why some hikers take a wrong turn, get lost and need to be rescued or even die?
Young girl lost hiking and froze to death on White mountain, NH, not long ago!
Blows my mind!
😪😪
You are good teacher
Great video. Very informative. Thanks. Subscribed.
I have the next model up. The garmin gps 60. It's sat linking isn't the best but is fine after you give it a few minutes. Updates matter too.
Very informative Well done Sir. Thank you.
Excellent video. Someone below in the comments asks if you can land survey with an Etrex. You can do basic metes and bounds with an Etrex but not a legal survey.
Excellent clear concise instructions.
This guy is awesome! Thank you very much.
Here 12 years later,👏
Very good video !
Excellent 👍 Thank you
Great video! And now on I’m going to call my GPS a Sat Nav
Most people simply call it GPS (Global Positioning System) As an airline guy we often fly "GPS" approaches. Kind of like heading to your CB1, but with an alignment to a runway with multiple waypoints along the way, and also most can calculate a "descent" profile typically a 3 agree slope. This gentleman has a great presentation style, and is obviously an excellent teacher.
great job .....you definitely can communicate it brilliantly
Great tutorial. Thanks for sharing, Sir
Absolutely brilliant!
For your info you can likewise navigate in the air in a plane or hélicoptère and better switch units to miles and knots in set up. You may also add from google Maps points you want to appear in your screen like visual nav points
Oh terrific stuff. Within a minute I was hooked. As stated in previous comments, what an excellent teacher. Is he related to Ron Swanson?
Liked and subscribed!
Jolly good mate
Thanks, from Brasil
No messing about straight to the point, good guy knows his subject. Now how do I get that book?
This was great!
GPS pioneer Dr. Neil Ashby (ref. Univ of Colo and NIST Research Director states that the GPS system determinations must be corrected by both general and special relativistic calculations and the requirement is that FOUR satellites anr needed for minimal accuracy for any waypoint location. He says this is caused by the enormous distances involved in the process. Not only is the range of each satellite measured along the transmission path of its signals, enormous, but so is the separation distance between the participating satellites. Happily, these corrections are now built into modern GPS receivers.
Muito bom, grande video!
It needs to connect to at least 4 satellites (last is for time reference) and I'm pretty sure the GPS in the video don't necessarily use 12, but can connect to a maximum of 12 (which would improve accuracy).
Now I understand. Thank you.
I love your voice
I was given a Garmin etrex 10 many years ago and i periodically take it out, frustratedly look at videos, realise that i cannot get it to do what i need it wo do, and return it to its box. All i want to do is to enter some coordinates from a walking book to follow a trail. Unfortunately, all the videos i have seen including this one seem to assume that i want to take coordinates (and create a route) based on where i currently am, rather than entering coordinates (and creating a route) in advance, driving to start and letting the device show me where to go . It does seem to be the most unintuitive device i have ever owned, but i would be really grateful if someone could please point me the way.
Excellent
..anyone that's used a Garmin 600 or 700 series knows why cell phones don't cut it for remote navigation..if you're hiking, driving, whatever in the city or outskirts, fine...I have Verizon which is currently the best service for coverage area here in Arizona and the gps in my S7 often fails where I am trekking/camping/4 wheeling in the mountains, while the Garmin is not only having no problems but is often accurate to within 10 feet...cell phones don't have access to the Russian GLONASS system of satellites which give you incredible precision w/your device...
Great tutorial
Very good.
Put a fresh Crunchie bar in that location and post the coordinates. I will program it into my Garmin eTrex Venture HC GPS and navigate to it. I will have to paddle my kayak across the Atlantic Ocean. I have never had a Crunchie bar, and I doubt they are available here in the States.
I have a problem that a line appears in the middle of the screen of this device and then disappears ?? What is the solution ?
Very well done, thank you.
Nice and clear. Thanks
well done
Awesome video, is there a number of limit for how many waypoints we are going to mark? Can we mark a whole trail with this?
Well, so it shows you the way in a straight line, but it doesn't account for any obstacles in the field. So, in the case of the mountain rescue team, how can they say "We'll be there in x minutes" when they don't know what's in the field. If they come across some major obstacle or some sort of precipice if they are in a mountain area, what then? Otherwise, I like the video, it's well explained.
Great help......thanks
Brilliant...thank you
Do any Garmins work with not just GLONASS and GPS but also with NAVIC ? I am going to Himalaya region and wanted to NAVIC is an option on Garmins
Did you leave that Crunchie Bar there? If so, can I have the coordinates. I have not had one since I emigrated to the US in 1976!
This was very useful for trekking , is there any device that can tell the route to different destination along?
Garmin 64 or 64s or 64st. You drop crumbs on your way.
Can you just use a smartphone for this?
I need to buy his book.
Thank you...:)
learned sth new today. thank you
Thank you
on an etrex 10 how do I get my nav display to always re-centre my position automatically when using the map display ? My position triangle goes off the display and it's a bit annoying.. Any help appreciated...good vid BTW
how to land survey with garmin etrex 12,20,30? this instruments will give accuracy results or not???? which is best??? ,,,,,,,....replay very past
well done!
Can anyone tell me what model Garmin gps unit he is using here ?
Paul Watson: Its a Garmin Etrex (there are various Etrex versions).....see link below.
th-cam.com/video/1_x3Qt3l9EQ/w-d-xo.html
Would the target be more precise if the 45 degree angle hit a specific thing you are trying to find?
how to land survey with garmin etrex 10,20,30? this instruments will give accuracy results or not???? which is best??? ,,,,,,,....replay very past..i need land survey video ...plz make video
Thanks
Hi buddy can I us this for hiking
Oh heah i realy need this when i'm in the desert at night but you cant get this here in Tunisia
If you have an iPhone, you can get a good GPS app like Gaia GPS and download free open source maps that cover the whole world, including Tunisia.
great!!!!!
how much point we can lock
So you put that Crunchie Bar within 95 km driving distance from Edinburgh.
This could be useful for helping me find megaliths. Brian Ghilliotti
I was going to buy one with a two-way radio when I go Gold detecting in WA but I thought what’s the point if I get bitten by a snake I would be dead in ten minutes lol
And above the clouds you can clearly see chemtrails.
as the big man says ....keep it simple stupid....
subbed
Good info, too bad auto exposure was on his camera. The pulsating sky was especially distracting.
