    In this special in-depth report, Mike Lowe profiles a true Milwaukee treasure: Fr. Reginald Foster. Foster is a Catholic priest who served as the pope's Latinist for 40 years. This is the story of how a plumber's son rose to the highest levels of the Vatican -- and how his passion for the Latin language led him to develop an unorthodox, but highly effective teaching style.

    Foster is a very vibrant character.
    I read about him in the book "The Vatican Diaries" by John Thavis.
    very interesting character. He loved to violate the Vatican laws (hold illegal Vatican tour, make free of charge of his lectures) and he loved to mock important people (including the Pope himself), john Thavis says in his book that he is all about scapegoat that Vatican has. He is the oldest in his office and he was passed many promotions that he should get it.
    But he is him, nobody else. He lives happily. that the most important thing.

    i learned latin for 6 years .... of course i don't speak it but it gives you a very good insight into the roots of western civilization and is a good starting point of learning romance languages as italian, french and spanish. furthermore it lets you understand better the grammar of your own native language, german in my case. learn latin!

    Classical Latin is the accent that was spoken by the actual romans. It was reconstructed by linguists and is the closest approximation to what latin may of sounded like when it was a living language. The pronunciation that Father Reginald speaks is ecclesiastical Latin (i.e. latin pronounced as if it were Itallian).

    I wanted to comment on how the shot of dust particles floating in the afternoon sun beams makes for a beautiful, if unwitting, visual allusion to Lucretius. However, I was unable to do so for several minutes, while I bartered with TH-cam over whether or not my identity credentials were satisfactory and whether or not this post should be shared on google plus, and what errors had occurred, and how I needed to reload the page. So much for facile literary references in this century.

    It is just lovely! I am a latino, whose mother tongue is (obviously) vulgar latin, reading comments in modern anglo-norman, while noting how interesting is it that the language of the Saxons has being influenced by latin, to such a degree, that the only thing that's left of its germanic origin, are just its common words.

    Found it: Foster continues to suffer serious health complications resulting from a fall in June 2008, and was admitted on January 17, 2009, into the Fatebenefratelli Hospital on the Tiber Island.[6] After a grueling several months spent mostly in intensive care, Foster narrowly avoided death. He finally recovered enough to be taken to the United States where has lived to recuperate and receive physical therapy at Clement Manor.[7][8] Due to his injuries, Foster canceled his Summer Latin program for 2009, but now intends to resume classes in the USA in 2010.

      I know it's a half decade too late - but... really? I mean, I speak English and Spanish, and I speak with people who speak all kinds of accents and dialects, all over the world. I don't say "Gee, they don't speak exactly the way I do, so I won't talk to them." So, sure, we learn classical pronunciation in school, and the church has it's italian pronunciation, but you can still communicate.... and the reality is, latin was spoken so widely and for so long that all kinds of pronunciations were around, just like english. or spanish.

    Latin might be slowly dying but to be honest here in Europe, especially Italy France Spain and Germany, Latin AND greek are still taught in what we call "classic lyceum" (5 classes that lead up to university particularly medecin and pharmacy) .
    Further more, in my time there were comics written in Latin (Bologna-Italy), Vatican radio broadcast and Polish Radio as well as at least one newspaper in Poland written in Latin, dealing not with religious subjects . I believe that today they are on the web for budget reasons . I left school at 13 and had the opportunity to study latin just for one year, but I have not forgotten one word of the "De Bello Gallico" by Cesar : Gallia est omnis divisa in partes tres quorum unam incolunt Belgae .............. !
    Fantastic modern language that can traslate any object,thought, machinery , invention with its multifaceted vocabulary !
    Notice that flora and fauna are all named in Latin and any doctor has to know latin and greek because the whole scientific jargon is written in one of the two "dead" languages ! Honors are tributed in latin,universities blasons and military ones are in latin !
    "Si Parva Licet" "Semper fidelis" "Per Aspera ad Astra" etc
    The English language owes a lot to latin, being constructed by the majority of words of two or more sillables (usually from the genitif of the third declination" - Did I say "declination", but that is latin : declinatio, declinationis !
    Monosillabic words are typically Saxon, Anglian (german tribe), or Flemish or Hugro/Finnish !
    I forgot lawyers that learn "Jus Romanus" in their first year !

    • @regologelliniromacivis
      @regologelliniromacivis 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Do dutch students study the "De Bello Gallico" Caesar's account of the conquest
      of Gallia ? Gallia est omnis divisa in partes tres

    • @regologelliniromacivis
      @regologelliniromacivis 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ***** I'll give you an example of a man with a litterary background (a degree in history and an other philosophy) that taught latin and greek
      in Florence and Milan to become eventually the
      most successfull governor of the Bank of Italy in the worst moments of our economic history .
      Eventually he was the President of Italy for 7yrs .
      His name : Carlo Azeglio Ciampi .
      A delightfull figure that has done a lot to honour my country ridden by a bunch of corrupt profiteers that did a lot of damage to our reputation . Still, nobody is perfect !
      Still a classic education has given the best statesmen to England and most European countries as well as great managers .
      The Reason ? Reading the Greek and Latin classics helps to discipline our minds and sustain our capabilities to debate and favor our creative thinking since both those far away civilisation have envisaged every aspect of our
      actual lives, valid to this day .and further on !

    "Rome will lose the Faith and become the seat of the Antichrist. The demons allied to Antichrist will operate on Earth and in the sky and Humanity will become worse. But God will not give up his truly faithful servants who are men of good will. The Gospel will be preached everywhere to all the people and the nations will know the truth"
