Wow, what a spectacular performance! I've never seen a viola the shape of yours before. Who is the maker? What size is it? Thank you for sharing your music with the world!
Sounds great David! What size is your viola and is it as responsive as it sounds? Just leaned of the Balmforths a week ago. Will definitely look into them when I'm able you get a new viola. All the best!
Hello! The viola is 16 and 5/8ths. Alan and Sarah are marvelous people and makers. The viola responds quite well, and plays easier than it looks. String length is 14.5 inches. It is also light in weight, so it doesn't break the back. Thanks for watching the video!
Nicely done! Been a viola player now for 5 years as an amateur and I can understand the difficulty of this piece. Are you playing a 18" viola? Mine is smaller (15.5) and honestly it doesn't sound as great as yours!
Hi David, Thank you for your comment. The viola I am playing is 16 and 5/8, but the string length is actually rather short for a viola of that size. The viola was made that way to be a bit more comfortable and playable. I tried an 18 inch viola once....I lasted about 45 seconds!....before having to put it back on the table. My back ached! This piece is so wonderful, isn't it?
Hello Alison! It would be easier for me to take a picture of my part and send it to you. If you google my name plus Fredonia (where I work) it should come up with a page that will get you my email address. Send me a line, and I'll respond with a picture! I have several fingerings in this Preludio that I love...and a really great one for 90-94.
Thank you Bernard. I think this bow is a Dodd (Dodd family likely rather than Father Dodd). It is a nice bow, but short and heavy. I don't play on it much any more. I actually use a pretty cheap shop bow!
Yours is my favorite version of this piece. Love bleeds into every note. This video should have made you internationally famous by now.
Sachin you are most kind. I'm glad you liked it. Do I remember you from our visit to FM? I hope you are well, and viola life is good! David
Respect !
Beautiful! Your sound is gorgeous.
Wow! You make this look so effortless- the fluidity and lightness of your articulation is incredible. Thank you!
Didn't expect to listen to the whole video, but lovely sound, excellent playing and interpretation - so without noticing I stayed till the end. Bravo!
I love your Bach interpretations, so stylish and musical. Bravo!
Thank you Frank for the kind comment. Have a lovely day.
So beautiful David! Thank you for continuing to inspire me (and my students) to practice with such grace and fluid movements. A wonderful recording!
Wonderful sound!! And you have a gorgeous viola. Well done!
Thank you David, have watched again and again.
Alex thanks! We miss you here and know you are doing great things at Peabody!

Hi David, Would you consider sharing your fingerings on this piece - particularly on measures 40-50?

Superb! What bow do you have?
