    Great lesson! I’ve been playing for almost two years but have a long way to go. I’m writing my own music & performing. This is a great lesson. I don’t play gospel but love learning about the 14736251 progression. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

    • @roma540
      @roma540 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually, I'd argue he made this progression look more complex than it is really. Here:
      You pick one chord in your scale and just play next chord in that scale, that is located 5th down. Repeat as long as necessary or until you went full cycle.
      Alternatively, pick your destination chord and play a chord 5th above before it. Again, repeat this pattern until you found progression that you need.
      Of course, to sound more musical, adjust octaves in which you play every note of given chords, especially your bass in the left hand.
      That'll be your progression and it's shorter versions. Now, if you would wanna go more advance, you can go for modified chords (sus and with alternated bass), as it has been done in the video to bring it closer to gospel specifically. But that's what's video is about, bringing simple it to a certain style, so you deal with more complexity here right away.

    Erskine do you think this course would be ok for a beginner. I don’t know much at all. I have stolen some tips from Pianote videos,but I find reading notation very hard. Thanks for posting this I would love to play in this style.

    • @syberyah
      @syberyah 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't bought their course, but I have watched a lot of their videos and they don't tend use a lot of sheet music in their videos, and when they do it tends to just be as more of a quicker help to those who can read quickly, rather than something you have to use, if that makes sense. Obviously I can't speak to the nature of their course, but I'd imagine it's probably good for people at your level since they tend to do pretty beginner stuff! And they have lots of free videos about the basics and music theory and the like, so you can probably pause the course and go watch whatever videos are relevant if you're not understanding something to help bring you up to speed, should that become necessary at all.
      As for reading sheet music: don't worry too much if you're slow; I started out suuuuuper slow and sight reading was honestly agonizing for me so I only did it a little bit at a time because otherwise I would go a little nuts, hehe, 😅 but now I'm a *bit* faster (still definitely not "fluent," but faster!) and it's not too bad, and you get faster with practice. You definitely don't need to be able to read sheet music to play, especially (but not only) if you have a good ear, so again, don't worry about it too much :)
      Hope this helps and best of luck!

    • @roma540
      @roma540 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jeromemartin7252 Unless you trying to write strictly diatonic (for some reason) - yes, you can. You can either think of it as chromatic mediant, or as secondary dominant - V chord of the next chord you will be playing next. Usually you will see those as dominant 7th (possibly with upper extensions), which is what happens here later in the video, when every chord became a 7th chord.
