  • The Crowning.
The Queen sitting in King Edward's Chair, the Archbishop, assisted with other Bishops, come from the Altar: the Dean of Westminster carrying the Crown, and the Archbishop taking the crown did reverently and place it upon the Queen's head. At the sight whereof the people, with loud and repeated shouts, cry,
    GOD SAVE THE QUEEN
The Princes and Princesses, the Peers and Peeresses put on their coronets and caps, and the Kings of Arms their crowns; and the trumpets sound, and by a signal given, the great guns at the Tower were discharged.
The acclamation ceasing, the Archbishop says:
"God crown you with a crown of glory and righteousness,
that having a right faith and manifold fruit of good works,
you may obtain the crown of an everlasting kingdom
by the gift of him whose kingdom endureth for ever. Amen."

      Mr. Bratwurst
The ceremonial is very well documented. With only minor changes the order of of the coronation is that used since the 14th century.

This is actually so strange to watch for some reason. The whole thing seems as if from another world. I guess because it's been so long since a coronation and most of us were never alive to see this.

So much has changed in Britain since, and yet the monarchy can be called the most consistent institution of them all in a country nearly unrecognisable to its past.

And His Master's Voice issued a Three LP Set of the 1953 Coronation Service with the Original sound Commentary by John Snagg and Howard Marshall Mono only because Stereo didn't start up till 1955 but didn't start taking off till 1958 and didn't take over Mono Recordings till 1967 and the Record Catalogue Numbers for the 1953 Coronation Service are ALP 1056,ALP 1057 and ALP 1058 so if any of the Facebook Readers are interested you can buy the Box set off the net and I found the best LP Pressing's of this Historical Service are from 1960-1964 and although it's a long Service the Recordings is very good having being Recorded in West Minster Abbey

    • @macnerd93
      @macnerd93 7 ปีที่แล้ว +71

Actually Dannielle Danby it was also shot using colour film stock. Only the live TV broadcast was black and white because thats all people had in their homes back then.
"The event was also filmed in colour, separately from the BBC's black and white television broadcast.[18] Millions across Britain watched the coronation live, while, to make sure Canadians could see it on the same day, RAF Canberras flew film of the ceremony across the Atlantic Ocean to be broadcast by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation,[19] the first non-stop flights between the United Kingdom and the Canadian mainland. At Goose Bay, Labrador, the film was transferred to a Royal Canadian Air Force CF-100 jet fighter for the further trip to Montreal. In all, three such voyages were made as the coronation proceeded"

jadzia. The Queen's father nearly did. In his diary he wrote that a Bishop stood on his robe and 'brought me up all standing. I had to tell him pretty sharply to get off.' Lots of things have gone wrong at coronations over the years. At King George III 's so much went wrong that the Lord Chamberlain apologised and said he had taken steps to make sure that the next coronation would be perfect. George was not amused by that. At Queen Victoria' s coronation the Archbishop of Canterbury forced the coronation ring onto the wrong finger and she had to soak her hand in water to get it off. She said it was very painful. Also, one of the Lords who had to kneel in front of her to swear his oath of loyalty slipped and rolled down the steps of the throne. Strangely, he was called Lord Rolle.

It's easy to forget how old the Queen is. I'm in my thirties and my earliest memories of the Queen are of her as an old woman (I'm English also). But the coronation was in 1952? or 1953? One of those, and she would've been about 24 at the time so she was a young woman when she became Queen.

The St Edwards Crown is heavy as hell. Made of solid gold, it weighs as much as a five pound bag of sugar.
Her Majesty must have been relieved to swap it for the lighter State Imperial Crown after the crowning:)

Note that when the Queen was crowned, all the assembled Peerage donned their coronets. We should not only see the Queen wearing her Crown of State and holding the Orb and Septre much more often, but also every Duke, Marquess, Earl, Viscount, and Baron wearing their Imperial coronets and robes at every public ceremony then attend. They're so "old school" now that they're actually cool! If you accept the title, then you should wear the "uniform" that goes with it (just like serving members of the military).

John Phillips She has failed it in many ways customs and traditions being one of them. The signing of the Maastricht and Lisbon treaty is against her oath and all of those in office to. We have no real rule of Law or real separation of powers. er oath which is contractual, constitutional does not allow this.

Receive this Imperial Robe, and the Lord your God endue you with knowledge and wisdom, with majesty and with power from on high; the Lord clothe you with the robe of righteousness, and with the garments of salvation.
Receive this Orb set under the Cross,
and remember that the whole world
is subject to the Power and Empire
    of Christ our Redeemer.
Receive the Royal Sceptre, the ensign of kingly power and justice.
Receive the Rod of equity and mercy. Be so merciful that you be not too remiss, so execute justice that you forget not mercy. Punish the wicked, protect and cherish the just.
God crown you with a crown of glory and righteousness, that having a right faith and manifold fruit of good works,
you may obtain the crown of an everlasting kingdom by the gift of him whose kingdom endureth for ever. Amen.

This was broadcast here in the UK by the BBC .. 1st ever Live outside broadcast I believe...I was only a toddler at the time ..and have no memory of watching it, although apparently I did.. Not many people had a TV in 1953, but my siblings and parents watched it with many of the neighbours and afterwards had a street party, as did millions of others across the Country...The sadness of The Queens inevitable passing will also bring about The Spectacle of William being Crowned King of England..(If Charles declines, and it passes to William, who knows? he could do that I believe... WOW, it will be Amazing.
