- Fighting a problem with My John Deere 5055E Diesel tractor... Loss of power, problem starting and just not running right... It would pay you to look at this video and see if your tractor might have the same equipment and potential problem.

I'm glad it worked for you, Steve. I have owned several John Deere (JD) utility tractors, and every time I encounter the first empty tank, I remove the strainer and install an inline filter (I also put in a shutoff valve). The inline filter is included in the scheduled fluid and filter changes.
I have a friend who is a JD technician, and he frequently replaces these strainers, yet JD never resolves the underlying issue. What kind of mechanic or practical engineer would design a screen at the bottom of a tank that can't be changed without draining all the diesel? Yes, you can buy or clean the strainer, but why would you ever put it back in?

Yeah powder coat can suck up a ton of moisture when improperly applied. I've seen quite a few pieces of equipment over the years where the powder coat will still look perfect, but the metal underneath is so rusted you can poke a screwdriver through it. Great video as always Steve 👍👍

I'm not defending JD at all in what I'm about to type. It has been my experience that oftentimes what we attribute to engineering buffoonery is actually a well-engineered solution to very poor requirements. Meaning to say, engineering cannot overcome poor requirements (ostensibly formulated by people whose motivations are not customer-friendly.)

My tractor has steel tank, so rust clogged the strainer in my water separator. So I added a Wix 33033 inline similar to your fix.
Based on another post below, I'll be changing it to a Wix 33270.
The diabetes med has another side effect you may not have heard of . Some people are having gallbladder attacks & emergency surgery to remove them. I think the powder coat problem may be caused by poor prep work on the part before coating . I have had the same peeling thing on some of my equipment .
Now they can claim that they designed their tractors to be fixed out in the field, with a simple pair of pliers. Sure is a nice tractor.

Thinking having a small auxillary 1 gallon tank for testing would of saved a lot of head scratching about a supply issue but monday morning quarterbacking is easy.
I have been an auto mechanic for 45 years
When i run into fuel issues i verify that i am getting full flow from the tank and lines.
I've run diesels for 50 years and never had one plug you need to use filtered fuel
Comes straight from the pump most of the time.... IF I have it in a can I always look inside for trash and never completely drain the portable cans...
It's all the Green Guys fault.

Too many engineers have zero real world experience. I see this on about every piece of machinery I work with. Stupid designs is one of the few things on which Deere cannot claim a monopoly.

@@10swatkinsI am behind on my videos or I could have told you about this problem. We install the inline strainer like the 5425 had and cut that in tank junk off. Be sure to get a strainer to put in and not that filter as a filter poses too much restriction since you already have the big filter to pull thru too. I reckon John Deere figures that but clean fuel and keep it clean in the manual covers them from the fact they stuck that rinky sink strainer in the tank. Lol

@@10swatkins RE220719 is the Deere strainer if you want to keep your Deere all Deere. LOL
The powder coat wasn’t applied properly. I don’t know why. But you’re not right about powder coat. I’ve been doing it for years. For outdoor equipment like that the metal needs to be properly prepared. Then a powder undercoat and after that the top coat. If they did it correctly, using the correct powders for outdoor use, it’s extremely durable. What happened there, I don’t know.
That's the problem,,, You can't tell if they properly prepared it from looking at it! I can't count the number of things I have bought that fail like this...
I know where there are 1500 keypad pedestals that are failing right now.... My loader is failing, my 20 foot flatbed trailer and the 16 foot dump trailer is failing also...
Absolutely have no way of telling if the prep was done correctly till it fails on you... Then it is too late and one hell of a job to strip it all off and save the machine, trailer or parts....
@@10swatkins honestly, I’m really surprised. Many autos and trucks have been powder coated for years without a problem. Usually acrylic or acrylic/polyester. They’re very tough. They last for a pretty long time on boats.

Hate to tell you all that JD has had stuff made in Mexico for many years. They have plants all over the world just like CAT and many others. Nothing new about it and not trying to be a smart ass about anything, just stating some facts. You can look it up if you like.

Two things Steve,
1- Why was it plugged up so bad? You should look in to that problem.
2- That screen is on John Deere"s parts website. No one is hiding it. It sounds like you need a better parts guy. Or learn how to find that kind of thing yourself. JD has all that stuff online.
Don't know... Trash in fuel over the years.... IF it's not in the manual and not on the page they give you with all the filters on it it is somewhat hidden. Looking parts up on the parts website is not what I consider in plain site when it should be a maintained item.
@@10swatkins Are you looking at the owners manual or do you have the shop manual. They are two separate books. Always have been. Shop manuals are pretty size-able. The one we have for our 8110 FWD is about 3 or so inches thick.

I’m not trying to be a “Karen” about this. Every car and truck on the road has a screen inside the fuel tank, why would a tractor be any different?
Dont put a paper element filter. Use a strainer type that has a screen and get rid of all that cloth wrapped hose
It's rated fuel line... There is a bigger fuel filter after the electric pump... Of course it is also paper but that's what they make them out of....
@@10swatkinsyou dont want a paper filter on suction side . And any line that has the cloth on it get rid of it. I worked for deere for 21 years and now do it on my own

@@10swatkins we carried rolls of hose in service truck to replace that hose it is suspectable to cracking and sucking air. Wix makes inline strainers that look just like a standard inline filter
