I use "nuclear" aging with Jack Daniels BBQ chips, which are JD barrel stave chips .I learned this technique from an internet distilling forum, and it works incredibly well Put an inch or so of chips in a quart jar and the fill the jar with white dog. Then put the jar in a microwave on high (without a lid of course) for 2 minutes. Remove the jar (use pot holders!) and put a lid and band on it and let it cool. When cool, remove the band and lid, which will seal by the vacuum that forms on cooling. The vacuum seems to extract both color and aroma from the JD chips. Nuke and cool twice more . After the third time, pour the whiskey off. You could do the same thing with the spirals , and get the color, but the aroma and flavor from JD chips is pretty special!

I did this with a rum I made. However, I put it into my car to "age" it. Smoothed it out, added great color and flavour, and improved the rum from being a silver rum to an amber.

@milehidistilling1 yea, I have done it in the past with mead and also got great results. It is a similar process to aging on a boat. All the movement, temp changes, and other factors help age it.

@@jameshartwell1429 That is super cool, James! I'm going to have to try that while it's still hot out here!

    Cool man thanks for posting.
Im gonna use this in a beer. Bourbon barrel ales are popular here this time of year.

You age store-bought vodka which is at 40% ABV ideally to age alcohol you want to be between 50 and 60% ABV then you proof it down to between 48 to 40% ABV

How do you remove spirals from the jug when you have one that has a narrow mouth like yours?

The best way is to tie a small string to the oak spiral right before putting in the bottle. Then, you can easily fish it out when done aging. With the way Devin did his in this video, you'd unfortunately just have to probably empty the bottle into another when done aging, turn it upside down and attempt to use pliers to remove. It's not really the preferred way.

You definitely do, but it could be a good alternative for people that don't want to wait years in a barrel.
