At the 2002 world cup they beat Mexico, USA, South Korea on the way to the final. You beat what is front of you.
German path to the 2014 WC was a group with Portugal, Ghana and the US and then knock-out games against Algeria (which was a surprisingly difficult game), France, Brazil and finally Argentina. That is certainly not an easy path.
