Came home from work early sa Pop wasn't feeling well. I sorted out his pills got him a cuppa tea. He asked me to get him the Daily mirror. He asked me to put on his bet with Papilon. The emergency Dr came, and I made some dinner but Pop wasn't hungry. Later on the race started, and I went to Pops room to see if he was watching the race. I woke him and he propped himself up to watch it. I sat in the chair next to his bed, and watched his horse romp home to win. Later I made him comfortable my sister, and brother popped in, and Pop fell asleep. Later after my sister, and brother went home and I retired to bed myself. As I opened my eyes my digital clock read 3.33 am. Suddenly the scripture Jeremiah 33v3 came into my mind "Call to me i will answer, and tell you great, and wonderful things you do not know" I went to his room, Pop was gone. God was good to him watching his horse win, and a Irish horse too..a few weeks later I picked up his winnings..
I watched this race - back when it still had fences - in a small apartment with my girlfriend at the time and we weren't talking for few days. Coming in on the second go round I couldn't keep it to myself and I started roaring for Ruby, I'd known him for years growing up, and as he brought him home there was screaming and then tears. It was all over from four out, Ruby looking behind him not quite believing th ehorse he had under him. Ride of a lifetime.
He was the gutsiest winner ever of the national that ground was atrocious I still can't believe to this day it didn't get called off if that ground was like that nowadays no way would it have been run
I remember my father getting up off his chair when he jumped the last and was shouting at ruby to whip him and bygod he whipped him. My earliest memory of the national. 😊
As Cameron W says the BBC commentator in the stands in this case Jim McGrath would have a spotter alongside him. After retiring from commentating, John Hanmer did this role for the big meetings. Also commentators can communicate between each other mid race.
One more thing worthy to be mentioned about this GN is BBC's commentary was directly connected onto the course, which is rarely seen over the years.

Papillon, the winner of this Grand National, died on 3 May 2017, aged 26.
That's a good innings for a horse. Glad he had a nice retirement.

Ruby Walsh went on to be one of the best jump jockeys ever....but occasionally fell off one to save the bookies a big payout !!. 😅
My first winner on the national ,why because of the film which i can watch 100s of times Papillon
Happy retirement champ 🏆
33/1 down to 10/1 😮, i could of kicked myself cause i didnt pay the tax and lost a good chunk of possible winnings
Red Maurader fell at Bechers but was good enough to win the next year
Only because everything with a chance fell or was brought down.

Got 40/1 on him,on the Friday night on BBC2 all the bookies tipped it...400 notes, tidy!!
Most iconic run in
Tony O Hehir commentating on BBC aren't RTE Television not paying him enough?

I'm convinced Papillon would of won the next year had he not had to remount

It was six minutes before they mentioned the winner.
40 seconds in
I backed Nicki Dee
Anyone hear someone mutter something randomly during the video
Often you can hear the other commentators telling the commentator speaking who the fallers are or who they themselves missed
