  • In this video we get the maiden flight in on a GAUI NX4, unfortunately it didn’t go to plan when the plastic tail blades exploded in flight. Plastic tail blades and nitro helis do not go together! Never trust them.

    That was certainly an interesting end.
    I have been very wary of plastic tail rotor blades _because_ of this reason.
    IIRC, my RAW 420 has plastic tail rotor blades. Before I get her up & flying, I will immediately replace those blades with carbon fibre tail blades.
    I plan on replacing her stock SAB blades with Rotor-Tech blades anyway (because they are far more efficient for my use case).

    • @westhobbiesrc8051
      @westhobbiesrc8051  ปีที่แล้ว

      I definitely don’t trust plastic table blades on any helicopter really. YourRAW 420 has plastic tail blades? That’s not normal. They come with carbon fiber out of the kit. Did you change them out?

    • @NiCadHeliPilot
      @NiCadHeliPilot ปีที่แล้ว

      @@westhobbiesrc8051 It's been a while & it's likely my memory is failing me here.
      'Cause I ended up having to leave both my RAW 420 & my Kraken 700 KSE behind, when I moved house about a month ago.
      I only have my other three helicopters with me, right now. Two of which have plastic tail blades & they are both sub 300 class.
      My only other 420 class helicopter that I have with me is my T-Rex 500 ESP 3G, & that has carbon fibre tail blades.

  • @charleshumphrey7021
    @charleshumphrey7021 ปีที่แล้ว

    The only problem I have ever had with plastic blades is when I hit a very small pebble. Other then that never had a problem with the kdbb blades coming apart. Have them on my 550 and 700. I don't do hard 3D though. The Align plastic orange ones that came on a used 500 though were absolutely junk.

    • @westhobbiesrc8051
      @westhobbiesrc8051  ปีที่แล้ว

      I would never personally trust plastic tail blades on a 550 or 700. Plastic gets brittle after a while and they will come apart. Depending on how much dirt in the sun, humidity and temperature. Carbon blades have gotten so cheap now it’s not worth the crash to me anyways.

      I can’t tell you how many tail blades I’ve gone through on the M2! I now change it every 10 flights. That’s one thing I really like about the S2! Over 1000 flights and same tail blade!

      Microheli makes a three bladed tail, but I’m pretty sure the S to tell blade fits on the Evo! And their plastic is incredible. Over 1000 flights on my S2 with the stock tail blade and the original one that came in the kit. I’ll check and see if it fits.

      Throttle hold is programmed like second nature lol if you can get on throttle hold before a crash it will lessen the amount of damage as there is no torque being put on the rotor. Carbon tail blades will last forever! Unless you crash lol

    Hi Jeff. I get that shipping costs vary on size and distance but what type of shipping costs are you seeing shipping 450 and 700 size helis say from your location to say Los Angeles? Figuring a 700 is like $100 via US mail?

    • @Lance57H
      @Lance57H ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you go to USPS I'm betting you're going to be closer to $40. You just need to take the boom, blades and skids off to get them to fit in a smaller box

    • @westhobbiesrc8051
      @westhobbiesrc8051  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Allan, yes around $100 to ship a 700. I’ve shipped them anywhere from $40-$120 depending on the box size, weight and location. LA is always more expensive. But, if the boom is pulled and in a smaller box it’s definitely cheaper.

      Hello, so I believe low speed was around 1 /12 turns and high speed was around 2 1/4 turns from closed. That will get you a good starting point. But a rule of thumb I always go by is two turns out on the low speed and 2 1/2 turns out on the high speed to start on any engine.

      Only reason I ask is cause I have a set of KBDD knock off orange plastic tail blades on my bitsa mongrel child Trex 450.
      To be honest I don't mind them but if that's what they are gonna do on a 500 size heli that spins the tail slower than a 450 size heli, I'm a bit worried that they may fail.

    • @westhobbiesrc8051

      A lot of it has to do with how old the plastic is how it was kept or maintained if any Loctite has touched it. On any helicopter that has plastic tail blades, which is only a few ice change them every 50 to 100 flights or so.
