I like the idea that Makar was once a Tree Sentinel, standing guard before Leyndell even after he's lost his mind and turned into a wyrm. I assumed it was a Tarnished who ate too many dragon hearts, but there's something evocative about a sentinel standing guard long after it has mutated/devolved.
If the Sentinels protect & represent the interests of the Erdtree, it seems unlikely they would make quick or hasty decisions & haven't begun their stations recently. The motivation to obstruct Tarnished may be much simpler & older than trying to specifically prevent the Erdtree's burning, though I don't think they'd like the fire option either. Is it more plausible that their Order simply wants to make sure not just any Tarnished can become Elden Lord, but only the strong & worthy? They will stop chasing enemies & not abandon their posts to simply murder, after all. For the draconic Sentinels, extending their lifespan could also be an attractive part of their path... at least until the change goes too far.

From the Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman description: “The ancient dragons, who ruled in the prehistoric era before the Erdtree, would protect their lord as a wall of living rock. And so it is that the shape of the dragon has become symbolic of all manner of protections.” It seems the assault of Gransax sparked a moment of inspiration for the Tree Sentinels. I do wonder if the draconic sentinel at farum azula isn't just serving to impede the tarnished, but also as a sort of warden to Maliketh? After all, while greatly loyal to Marika, he does hold the power of the rune of death, and is by far one of the strongest demigods still alive because of it. We also know already that Marika didn't exactly treat him well, considering some of his dialogue if you do the deathroot quest
Like what, a jailer of some kind ? I'm pretty sure that the Draconic tree sentinels didn't engage in dragon communion rituals rather the ancient dragons bestowed powers on then as a reward for worship. I remember reading somewhere that after the war of the ancients dragons Goldwyn befriended Fortissax and worship of the Ancient Dragons was accepted alongside worship of the Erdtree, in this new era a organization similar to the Roundtable Hold was created to communicate with the Ancient Dragons, that where Lansseax met Vyke and bestowed powers on him and that's probably where the Draconic Tree Sentinels got their dragon powers, so rather than dragon slayers they are dragon worshipers.

I think the forbidden lands speaks for itself. The Tree Sentinels are stationed all along the way to the city. If someone has reached the forbidden lands then they've already failed in their mission to keep people out of the city that houses the Erdtree. I like these guys alot, I like the lleyndell armoured knights too, my Bobby Baratheon theme looked pretty top notch with those antlers and a couple of big ol'axes and hammers
Just for your future reference: When it says the sentinels “yet serve the Erdtree”, that doesn’t mean they’re doing it temporarily like you said. That just means “they still serve the Erdtree”.
This is the first video of yours I’ve seen and I’ve gotta say you made excellent content my friend. This was so concisely thought out with no bullshit, I assumed that you had upwards of a couple hundred thousand subscribers. I subbed as soon as the video ended.
Great vid! I went through the whole game and never thought that much about the lore on these guys. And ironically I'm rocking the full Tree Sentinel armor set plus the greatspear and the Erdtree greatshield. These are my bros!
I wish I could experience opening that door to Limgrave again. Such a magical moment coming into the open world and seeing the Erdtree towering over everything in the world. Then off in the distance you see a giant knight in gold
I've watched so many content creators cover the same topic. And I love it. This stuff is like a long movie. I just want to watch lore videos again and again. Good work!
I think that they might’ve made a deal with dragons or started worshipping them. They use lightning spells, which only seem to come from the worship of Dragons, as they come from the Dragon cult. Dragon Communion doesn’t seem to give this power, so I wonder if they actually participated in it.
Radagon is probably not liked among tree sentinels. The erdtree is shut by radagon so we need to burn the erd tree to restore the elden ring. Radagon gets in the way of golden order and refuses the restoring of elden ring by shutting it close which is weird because we didn't need to burn it down until it was shut. We can see that its his job because of the seal, It's the same of the radagon soreseal and stuff. There must be a gap of info about radagon.
What are they? Fuckin awesome that's what!! My favorite boss characters in the entire game, just recently got my first ending with the Tree Sentinel build 😁
i found the draconic versions of the equipment dissapointing, it would be nice if there was a unique red version of honed bolt with like two or 3 quick bolts instead of one yellow and their greatclaw could accept buffs so you could use vyke's lightning fotification on it. it also might not be dragon communion, because even though their horse spits fire, their abilities seem mostly like dragon cult incantations. im of the opinion though that communion with ancient dragons is a little different, which is why the placidusax communion spell only requires faith and is classified as neither
This is about everything I gathered from the game itself. Pretty standard but great video. I wish that the lore itself just went a little deeper. About the Erdtree itself and also about these Tree Sentinels. The Erdtree is a different topic entirely but what I mean about the Tree Sentinels is that I wish some information was given about their origin in the physical world. Where do they come from? Or rather, how do they come to be? Are they human? Can a Leyndell Knight ascend to the rank of Tree Sentinel the same way that a police officer starts out as a constable and could potentially become a Lieutenant or a Sergeant through gathering experience?
Something very strange I've noticed is the normal tree sentinel helmet has some weird red, fleshy substance beneath the visor, it could just be cloth or maybe it's something else
Well they never dismount their steeds, so it would seem they're one entity. Perhaps they're similar to nuckelavee under the armor? The red you see could be their horrific Visage.
4:33 I liked this theory regarding where Tree Sentinels are placed. But now I'm wondering how it holds up with the 2 new sentinels we find in Scaduview.
Simple, they were placed there by Marika specifically to keep the shaman village a secret, perhaps because of the minor Erdtree of light that still sits in the middle of town.
Can anyone confirm this but I think killing the Daconic sentinel before Malekith might be the trigger for breaking the Goldmask quest line. Specifially at the part where you have to do the law of regression and talk to Goldmask about Marika being Radagon. I didn't do the law of regression because I didn't have the int nor the means to get the int (aside from respecing). I also visited the pair in the capital, after godskin duo. Looked at the brother Gorhin (or what's hes name) shop and stuff. Then I spent a lot of time collecting items and upgrading items before changing the capital. After a while I went back to Goldmask and he's not there and the monk is dead or something. There was a bell bearing in he's place. And all I did in the meantime, as far as progression goes, was killing the sentinel before Malekith. Only thing that Wiki says about the law of regression puzzle, is that if you progress too far, you cant talk to Goldmask about Radagon anymore and the quest is over. I finally decided to do the law of regression because I wanted the T-pose emote and the skimpy outfit. And I was finally able to get 37 int using various items. But unfortunately right after the quest broke.

When I fought that Draconic Tree Sentinel that horse was more of a threat. The Horse spammed 6 fireballs in a row hitting me everytime I tried to heal from the last.
This is probably a bit old news by now, but don't we know that the DTS's probably don't do dragon communion, considering the differences between the lightning-based Ancient Dragon powers, and the arcane-rooted Dragon Communion that utilizes the powers of modern dragons? Ancient Dragons don't drop dragon hearts or anything, after all, and the ancients were the ones from the dragon war right?
Both ancient and current dragons fought in the war. Dragon communion started due to the war as the dragon cult came from the alliance of Godwyn and Fortisaxx. The members of the dragon cult practiced dragon communion.
That's going to be rough I'm at 251 and haven't improved my health past the beginner level. It's truly a heroine fight each time I come across a great enemy.

Hey make a vid about the wormHead’s. They might be tied with the prince of death or the crucible or if not they might be a new species that’s been a ostracized by the order.😺
My theory on their origin is 2 pronged. 1. They are literal worms that were effected by the death roots underground and now don't understand what they are. 2. It's not well developed but they appear to be similar to cemetery shades bodily. Haven't figure that out just yet
nice theory, my main comment on it though is i don't think it was dragon communion for the draconic tree sentinels but dragon cult. communion is from devouring normal dragon hearts and corrupts the user, whereas the cult is what formed after Godwyn defeated an ancient dragon fortisaxx(i think), but they then made an alliance after. The reason i believe this is all the abilities they show are lightning based which is specifically dragon cult and not dragon communion. as Godwyn was the heir of the golden lineage it may be that the tree sentinels were his personal troups and the strongest benefitted from the dragon cult, now without there leader they serve the Erd tree itself, with the draconics tree sentinels both guarding the capitol(erd trees location), and Maliketh who had destined death. :)
@@square-table-gaming it came about due to the war I believe, when godwyn defeated one. Which if he was the head of the tree sentinels makes sense as he would’ve been defending the city. But ye the horse shoots fire, but the riders use far more lightning skills which are associated with ancient 4 winged dragons. I could be wrong but their abilities line up more with the cult then with the communion group imo. Just wanted to throw that in to what you put, it’s just my take on the same evidence you presented.
These guys make me sad that there’s no armour for torrent, also I can’t wait to finish this game at least once so that I can dive into ALL the Elden ring content. Lore videos, full length challenge runs, etc.
I don't think the Draconic Tree Sentinels partake in Dragon Communion for the chief reason they don't use any of its spells. They don't need to eat dragon hearts because Gransax's body is right there for the taking to make armor from. Any spells they use iirc come from the Dragon cult of Leyndell, formed after the war is over. The Leyndell Dragon Cult & Dragon Communion are almost certainly separate practices. If anyone has eaten a dragon heart, its the damned horse spitting fireballs at us.
That would mean that Recusant Bernal failed to become the elden lord because he didn't release the rune of destined death. That's why his maidens sacrifice didn't function properly at the forge. This also means that his entire character arc is based on his own misunderstanding of the rules of this game of thrones. Wait, sh*t. Right author, wrong book.
So Grace wants us to retake all runes and wed Marika but the Tree doesn’t want this to happen. Making the Greater Will at odds with the Tree. But why? And why are the Fingers associated with nefarious stuff?
There's currently a strong theory suggesting that Grace is actually tied to Marika and her wishes while the fingers are simply playing along, expecting us to fail.
It's fair to say Loretta holds the same kind of job as the tree sentinels but for the Halligtree. Interestingly she's more deeply tied the Carian Royal family.

I literally just killed the Limgrave Tree Sentinal about 10min ago. Was sad to see him go knowing I’ll never get to run from him anymore again!
This is the first video of yours I’ve seen and I’ve gotta say you made excellent content my friend. This was so concisely thought out with no bullshit, I assumed that you had upwards of a couple hundred thousand subscribers. I subbed as soon as the video ended.
Thank you! I like to think we're carving out our own niche, just gotta see if the larger community wants to see what we're making!
These are some of the best lore videos rn after all the main game lore is out and known now
Thank you! We really wanted to research the individual enemies since there's so many with great stories you'd never know without digging in.
"Dragon Communion doesn’t seem to give this power, so I wonder if they actually participated in it."
They most certainly did not.
Bro was getting owned by that draconic tree sentinel
Radagon is probably not liked among tree sentinels. The erdtree is shut by radagon so we need to burn the erd tree to restore the elden ring. Radagon gets in the way of golden order and refuses the restoring of elden ring by shutting it close which is weird because we didn't need to burn it down until it was shut. We can see that its his job because of the seal, It's the same of the radagon soreseal and stuff. There must be a gap of info about radagon.
It’s videos like these that make me want to keep going even tho the game kicks my ass
Dang man your Elden ring vids are blowing up, this is really good lore content.
Thank you!
It's easy
They speak for the trees,
And of you stray too close to them,
They'll stab you're fuckin' knees.
Better if Sap from the Tree makes you sneeze,
That way you cannot cross paths,
More Ovaltine please
What are they? Fuckin awesome that's what!! My favorite boss characters in the entire game, just recently got my first ending with the Tree Sentinel build 😁
Definitely doing a tree sentinel run
i found the draconic versions of the equipment dissapointing, it would be nice if there was a unique red version of honed bolt with like two or 3 quick bolts instead of one yellow and their greatclaw could accept buffs so you could use vyke's lightning fotification on it. it also might not be dragon communion, because even though their horse spits fire, their abilities seem mostly like dragon cult incantations. im of the opinion though that communion with ancient dragons is a little different, which is why the placidusax communion spell only requires faith and is classified as neither
Wyrm is pronounced like worm. As in a dragon that crawls, not flies.
That's wyrd.
@@TheFos88 No, a Wyrd is a shield or cause to protect.
Or an elemental shaped like a woman who guards a natural area
Gotta dodge that fireball my friend lol
I love the draconic tree sentinels such giga chads, couldn’t beat the dragons so they tried becoming dragons
Double Tree Sentinel outside Leyndell is the stuff of nightmares
What's worse? Double Tree Sentinels or double Crucible Knights?
@@completelyroundoak double crucibles anyway of the week.
Something very strange I've noticed is the normal tree sentinel helmet has some weird red, fleshy substance beneath the visor, it could just be cloth or maybe it's something else
Two ideas. 1. Root resin 2. Red wax used as a seal on jar boys. Both red and tree relTed
Well they never dismount their steeds, so it would seem they're one entity. Perhaps they're similar to nuckelavee under the armor? The red you see could be their horrific Visage.
I dismounted one but they gain Iframes and respawned the horse like it never died.
I think the whole set is a root growth alchemy amalgamation
I only notice that red spot after I beat him to a pulp. It must be blood from getting his head kicked in by the Tarnished.
great video also i love your narration and using the character creation ost
You know why they’re called tree sentinels, right? Because if you don’t count draconics, there are only tree of them on the map.
Thanks for making this one!!
Good vid. I like your style of humble story telling. Keep it up!
Your voice is so soothing and calm, that fell asleep. xD
I recently started playing this game and was clearing Limgrave and small bosses no problem, thought the tree sentinel would be easy…Got one shotted 5 times and decided i’ll just move on for now. Them dudes got a HEAVY hand
Why didnt you level vigor?
@@trueoriginality5287 ....good question.. i guess i didn't think about it. i was given sooooo many runes. now i'm stuck with it xp th-cam.com/video/9TXAximVprw/w-d-xo.html
I would love to see a video on dragon communion and the dragon war
1:35 we have tree sentinel at home
tree sentinel at home
Underrated comment 😂😂😂
I was very worried you weren't gonna show us the kill of the 2nd tree sentinel at the end and ruin the satisfaction
But it happened🎉
Not gonna lie, caught in editing that the end of the video didn't quite include the kill. Had to go back and adjust because I knew I'd want to see that if I watched till the end.
Hey make a vid about the wormHead’s. They might be tied with the prince of death or the crucible or if not they might be a new species that’s been a ostracized by the order.😺
They'll be in the next poll!
My theory on their origin is 2 pronged. 1. They are literal worms that were effected by the death roots underground and now don't understand what they are. 2. It's not well developed but they appear to be similar to cemetery shades bodily. Haven't figure that out just yet
My favorite fight in the game is killing the first tree sentinel as a lvl 1 wretch with the club.
I wouldn't say I "quickly" learned that fighting isn't the best choice, I fought the first tree sentinel for over an hour
another detail is that the tree sentinels have statues on each of the grand lifts in the game
nice theory, my main comment on it though is i don't think it was dragon communion for the draconic tree sentinels but dragon cult. communion is from devouring normal dragon hearts and corrupts the user, whereas the cult is what formed after Godwyn defeated an ancient dragon fortisaxx(i think), but they then made an alliance after. :)
I like this theory, but their horses do use fire breathe abilities. I could also be wrong on this but wasn't dragon cult post dragon war?
@@square-table-gaming it came about due to the war I believe, when godwyn defeated one. Which if he was the head of the tree sentinels makes sense as he would’ve been defending the city. But ye the horse shoots fire, but the riders use far more lightning skills which are associated with ancient 4 winged dragons. I could be wrong but their abilities line up more with the cult then with the communion group imo. Just wanted to throw that in to what you put, it’s just my take on the same evidence you presented.
@@square-table-gaming ancient dragons use fire aswell
These guys make me sad that there’s no armour for torrent, also I can’t wait to finish this game at least once so that I can dive into ALL the Elden ring content. Lore videos, full length challenge runs, etc.
I bet you they were an integral part in defending leyndell when it was under siege
They absolutely were. That's also the reason there are draconic tree sentinels.
Very cool deep dive.
Thank you!
I think maybe even theodorix might be one, as he guards a sacred relic maybe, the golden order greatsword
The unique Magma Wyrm? His Incantation said he was a troll, hence maybe why he's different since normal Wyrms were humans.
@@PapaNihil-w3x forgot it said that lol never mind then
It sucks that we can't get its mount.
Forget The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion horse armor.
Give me Elden Ring torrent armor.
@@ohmygawd601 hell yes! And the knight calvary horse aswell lol. I think modders will do that in future.
They were formally known as the Knights Who Say... Nee!!!!
I just passed the draconic sentinel and went straight to malekith lol
😂 honestly a solid decision
I love how you tried to heal and this mf just keeps sending you big ball's of fire in your sexy face 😂😂
It would be very cool to fight a tree sentinel that doesn’t have a Horst
I was expecting a calm voice and wasnt surprised
I don't think the Draconic Tree Sentinels partake in Dragon Communion for the chief reason they don't use any of its spells. They don't need to eat dragon hearts because Gransax's body is right there for the taking to make armor from. Any spells they use iirc come from the Dragon cult of Leyndell, formed after the war is over. The Leyndell Dragon Cult & Dragon Communion are almost certainly separate practices.
If anyone has eaten a dragon heart, its the damned horse spitting fireballs at us.
Do the giant hands next! I must know
I feel like the only tree sentinel we meet is there to also watch over the merchant seeing as how he *is* afflicted with the flame of frenzy.
So is that a "I agree kinda" or a "I like the energy, but nah."?
That would mean that Recusant Bernal failed to become the elden lord because he didn't release the rune of destined death. That's why his maidens sacrifice didn't function properly at the forge. This also means that his entire character arc is based on his own misunderstanding of the rules of this game of thrones. Wait, sh*t. Right author, wrong book.
My first playthrough i didn't run into the first tree sentinel
So Grace wants us to retake all runes and wed Marika but the Tree doesn’t want this to happen. Making the Greater Will at odds with the Tree. But why? And why are the Fingers associated with nefarious stuff?
There's currently a strong theory suggesting that Grace is actually tied to Marika and her wishes while the fingers are simply playing along, expecting us to fail.
Wow this guy took almost every hit from the draconic tree sentinel
Gotta show off how powerful they are right?
Keep making videos, doing a great job sounds odd but they are perfect for gardening or right before bed😂🤙🏼
they are so beautiful
Anything about Lorettas similarity to the sentinels?
It's fair to say Loretta holds the same kind of job as the tree sentinels but for the Halligtree. Interestingly she's more deeply tied the Carian Royal family.
How tall are regular tree sentinels?
Like not on their horses me and my friend were having a debate about how tall they were and i have looked across the internet and found nothing
Am I the only one who thinks that the tree sentinel armor looks like the lawbringers from for honor
Who are the Tree Sentinels?
Bastards.
What a BEAUTIFUL voice!
They also have the strongest ability in the game.
Deleting frames.
I dont know if im the only one, but I thought the Tree Sentinel getting their mount downgraded to riding Torrent (which looks like a donkey) was pretty funny
I don't know about you but I'd be more terrified if all of the tree sentinels could chase me around on spectral steeds
@@square-table-gaming Thats actually very true. Can't imagine how scary the last one in Farum Azula would be if he were spamming double jump
Theres also a magma wyrm in consecrated
The undisputed drip lord's.
What armor are you wearing in this video? I know it's crimson noble hood buy what's the rest? Ty
Blaidds armor altered!
Y'know... Seems like any path to accrue dragons seems like a cursed path in Fromsoft games. I'm with Patches, screw the greed, screw the dragons.
I used to be a tree sentinel
