- As former president Donald Trump's second impeachment trial enters its third day, the question remains whether his words or actions incited the January 6 assault on the Capitol. But little attention has been paid to a video that was shown that same day, at the January 6 "March to Save America" rally in Washington, D.C. Jason Stanley, a scholar of fascist propaganda, claims that this short video -- shown immediately after Rudy Giuliani left the stage, prior to the attack on the Capitol -- was full of themes and tactics that threaten liberal democracy. Stanley breaks the video down with Hari Sreenivasan and elaborates on its role in the violence that took place on that infamous day.

Reaganomics was ultimately a success because the critics stopped calling it that when it produced the desired results. There were four presidents who lowered corporate taxes and taxes on the wealthy, one of them was a Democrat , JFK. The results were that the gov't received more in taxes from those entities. Why ? Because when you place absurd taxes on corporations and wealthy people they simply refuse to pay them and find a way to hide their money. When you make taxes reasonable...they pay them.

What happened in Germany in the 20's and 30's was like the perfect storm, where severe economic collapse and fears of communists taking over enabled Hitler's rise, aided by opportunism and luck. Trump doesn't have those conditions to gain control again, and in all likelihood he won't, but his cult-llike base will pose a serious threat for years to come, and one of his clones could run for office to wreak havock again. But maybe like the fizzling of the Bushes they will be unsuccessful.
And while Hitler was in jail, he wrote "Mein Kampf", which explicitly laid out his plans. What did Western leaders do about Hitler's plans? Appeased him. What have RepuGNican politicians done about tRUMP's many crimes and flirtation with treason? Protected him.

This is the third time I watch this interview and it is more chilling each time. Maybe because I'm 73, left Cuba in '61 after witnessing the fall of democracy at age twelve and everything that preceded it from age nine; maybe because I've read 1984 as many times with the same effect; maybe because I've also lived, and worked, and burrowed into the cultures of different countries where I've lived out my exile's live. What troubles me is this: we've known this is how it works. For decades we've known. And yet the "way" it works, keeps working. The lies keep working. The propaganda keeps working. The intellectual and moral corruption keeps working. The fear as a weapon of control keeps working. We are no different today, as a "people", as a species, as humans, than we were in the times of Pharaohs. And I can see the writing on the wall: American democracy died long ago; American capitalism took its place saying it could build a better world and look where we are. There is an old proverb in Spanish that translated goes something like this: in muddy rivers, advantage fisherman. And the last four years have left every aspect of American life in turmoil. A fractured nation, a fractured nation that is at the same time being further segmented by algorithms and deplorable personal habits and social values (like lying to get ahead, materialism, greed, selfishness, racial superiority, or inferiority, victim syndrome, battered wives and children and, wait for it, some husbands too). Heightened fears; heightened anxieties; heightened anger. A fading God. This is the kind of brew that brings down civilizations. And if you haven't noticed that we are in free fall, you haven't been paying attention.

The final scenes are stunning. Clip #1 shows a fallen soldier in a flag-covered casket being carried by his fellow soldiers. I see the glorification of the ultimate sacrifice, a patriot who is willing to give their life & gaining the respect of their brethren. Not for our country, but for Trump. Clip #2 at the end shows Trump, completely surrounded by a white glowing light, walking toward his followers. Definitely an attempt to portray Trump as a spiritual leader, godlike, with a mighty righteousness. Lastly, the choice of music...no patriotic march, no swelling strings to convey peace and bonding among Americans. It's an edgy, aggressive & forceful rock song which, in it's original version, targeted males and their frustrations with lyrics such as "it doesn't even matter how hard you try" and "in the end it doesn't even matter." Trump's spin doctors emphasizing the idea of the stolen election and targeting that frustration to turn it into violent retribution. Thank you for showing this video. Never saw it before.

Thank you Jason Stanley. One of the truly horrific aspects of this episode, isn’t so much that many at the Elipse rally may have not been aware of its antisemitic character, but that Americans at large don’t grasp the extent to which dog-whistles of this sort absolutely DO resonate with far right-wing militancy. These dog-whistles have had strong direct efficacy as rallying themes for the far-right dating back decades. And here they are…out in the open…at a very public rally organized by attended by the President.
It should also be noted that this far-right fringe now has a new symbol that it has been rallying around for at least 15 years. That symbol is the AR-15 military style rifle, carried by dedicated US servicemen and woman. It is now been co-opted through aggressive state-of-the-art digital-age marketing and can be found in badges, flags, tee-shirts…you-name-it, throughout the most militant and fascist-leaning right-wing groups.

Apparently, they think people won't find out, as to what that new symbol means - at least for now...

We have not considered that a representative from California protested the counting of electoral college votes. She explained how the governors of the states decided to send electors to the electoral college meeting without the States finishing the counting of absentee ballots. This person was speaking and the microphone was turned off the camera was sent outside and we watched the people on the steps while the reporter described what happened on the floor of the house of representatives. She was shot and and the people ran up the steps she was carried out the backdoor to an ambulance but she died on the way to the hospital. Two other women were shot by police during the riot and the representative from California was confused with the woman climbing through the window or the woman who tried to talk to vice president pence. An officer was questioned about the shootings and he was killed in a bizarre attack at the barricades the next day.

Watch Richard Burton's last film 1984, I was an extra on the set. One scene we had to react to a propaganda film which we had to rehearse all day until the director was satisfied that we were really 'believing' it and reacting to it and using the salute.
