The Long Island Railroad is honestly really good! Even for MTA standards. Very glad to see the station renovations, and the new third track. Can't wait for Grand Central Madison later this year!
I believe there were switch problems Yesterday which caused the disruptions in Mineola in my opinion Mineola should have an Island Platform in case one of the tracks go out of service
Yes, passenger rail has become a real estate game. NIMBY and class-1 make make new rail lines impossible. Drove from philly to roanoke, in PA an VA all new bridges and overpasses are built for a non yet existent third lane. But 50 years from now, it will be there. Glad someone is planning ahead. Given our permitting process; ask for the lane or track now.

I was a little kid in the 1970’s living on the corner of Daisy Ave and Floral Blvd. I lay awake at night listening to the Budd electrics fly back and fourth. I have memories of Alco RS3’s shunting slow freights along Atlantic Ave . As a kid, in the backseat of our 67 Plymouth Belvedere, I always noticed a stretch of track at ground level running beside the huge warehouse adjacent to the main line . After researching the grade crossing elimination project in the early 60’s I now realize that this was a temporary mainline bypass used during that project and then abandoned after it was completed. I believe the tracks are still there, but the warehouse is now a self storage business.
Hey Tim. I also went to Mineola Station on September 20th, 2022. They really did a great job building the triple track all the way to Hicksville, NY. I really like it a lot, thanks to LIRR President Phillip Eng and MTA Chairman & CEO Janno Lieber. I even have the railfanning video at Mineola station on September 20th. I grew up in the 60s-early 70s 1 block from the Port Jefferson LIRR station. Never met my grandfather but he was an LIRR engineer when the PRR owned it.
Due to the confusion with track numbers which would only be further jumbled if renumbered in order, they should be assigned letters instead of numbers. "Track A, Track B, Track C". Great blog. I'm subscribed.
The way those M7’s power down at the station reminds me of the power down of a Harrier when it touches down on the flight deck of a Navy ship. The Harrier is a bit louder I would guess but you still get the whirring sound.
Thanks for posting. I always wanted to see the progress on the third track project. The last time I was on the train was from 1997-1999 so all this is new to me. I'm a bit of a horn freak too, but I prefer NJT and Metro North horns. LIRR horns are too harsh in my opinion.
So with all these changes, will I be able to take mainline trains to UBS/Elmont or will I still have to go to Jamaica and switch to an eastbound Hempstead train? I really enjoy the videos showing progress on the third track project.
Mainline switches are being built to allow those trains to stop at Elmont. I would prefer going via Jamaica because you can catch a train that goes directly to a Station right by the arena
@@3985uprr I agree with you. That UBS/Elmont station still leaves you with a 1/2 mile walk to the arena. The only trains that stop at the Belmont station (the one adjacent to UBS arena) are special event trains that leave only from Jamaica. Unfortunately, if you are coming from eastern LI, you end up doubling back which is a major time waster. Also, the trains move into Belmont station at a glacial pace. I've seen videos posted of trains pulling into Belmont and they are moving as fast as the people are actually WALKING to the arena.

Started rail fanning the LIRR main and OB branch in the mid 1960s. (Hometown Mineola). Any indication that the short OB electrification to E Williston is still active? Thanks for sharing this preview for us-I'll be visiting there in mid October.
Odd question: I've seen in other forums some very unfavorable remarks about the reliability of the DE / DM30 ACs. Seems to me they run all day, every day, with apparently few breakdowns. Built on solid EMD platforms, what's the beef. Sure, they're aging but they soldier on.
They have problems at times but they seem to manage with availability of locomotives. Recent Labor Dar east end services tax the diesel fleet but the trains performed well. In a few more years they will start to retire them for Chargers

Whose stupid idea was it to make the Oyster Bay switch from only track 3. Mineola needed an island platform so they didnt need to accomodate bi directional oyster bay trains on one track as well as all nyc trains.
They were trying to avoid crossover moves on the mainline. The Oyster Bay Branch doesn’t see a huge amount of traffic so that switch seems minimally disruptive. When the triple track is open all the way to Hicksville, the Long Island Rail Road will mean business with it in the rush-hour
I am wondering why the dual modes are simply running on electric mode at this point instead of getting out the tunnel then activating the diesel engine at Jamaica Suthpin Blvd JFK Airport LIRR Platforms or Woodside 61st LIRR Platforms

It bothers my ocd that they changed track 1 to track 3 and track 2 to track 1, and the new track is track 2. Seems like it would’ve made sense to call the new track track 3. But I don’t work on the railroad, and I’m sure there’s a reason for the change
I used to be in charge of LIRR station signage. These sorts of track number oddities is why we decided to give side platforms letters instead of numbers, Platform A, B etc. Sometimes the track numbering system may not make sense to the riders.
@@3985uprr I understand that diesel locos burn fuel to turn generators to run the traction motors. So I guess the DC from the 3rd rail isn't enough due to the weight of the locos pulling dead weight.
With the first train with the locomotive at the end, is that an EMU with a loco attached? I can see the loco is running. Does the loco have a crew or is the driver at the other end the sole operator of the train?
Do all eastbound trains to Oyster Bay have to run reverse on new track #3 to get to the Oyster Bay Branch? Seems like that has the potential to delay westbound ML trains?

so many things they did wrong 3rd track project. no island platform at mineola, what the did to the connection to oyster bay branch making messy crossover worse, removing of high speed switches at floral park. the whole elmont station which is a total waste. belmomt park spur west and east legs should have just been rehabbed and make proper use of existing severely underused station thats also closer to arena. typical pennywise pound foolish. also shunting off atlantic branch to a shuttle train, no plan to replace the c3 and de/dm30acs... lirr sucks.
If they could replace that 15 mph switch with a high speed switch at Floral Park, it will make it easier for eastbound mainline trains to stop at Elmont. A Mineola flyover for OB trains I imagine would be cost prohibitive.
@@3985uprr no firm plan or order for new locomotives. need new design for dual mode chargers too no? if amtrak is eventually replacing the P40's running between NYP and AlB with a dual mode charger it would be with over running 3rd rail shoes. LIRR is underrunning. c3 fleet is in dire need of expansion if not total replacement as well. or electrification needs to expand. electrifying to port jeff would help remedy the shortage of diesel equipment and the severe lack of space at Hunt. though 3rd track will help allowing deadhead and/or reverse peak moves to huntington as mainline is no longer throated for parts of peak.

There was. From what I understand, JCC couldn't operate Nassau 3 for some reason
You have to remember that I lived on the oyster bay branch and used to take the train to NYC a lot

On a separate note, whenever they do a rails-to-trails they need to keep the option of rail traffic AND keep the trail. Electric trains make no sound.

Since when did C3 Bi levels got E-Bells? Did they ever have Mechanical Bells or no?

It’s a diesel push pull train. The operator up front controls the rear diesel from that cab.
Why is there still jointed rail in places ?
Those engines were not EMD they were ALCOS
Not the DL-30s and DM-30s. They have 12- cylinder EMD Model 710 engines.
