    It's always a special occasion to get a new release in the Acoustic Sounds Series, and this one is truly a worthy title to get the AAA audiophile treatment. Recorded by Verve live at Town Hall in 1966, Ryan K Smith has done his usual magic bringing out the best of the tapes. Great performance, great sound, silent vinyl from QRP and a gorgeous Stoughton gatefold. Whats not to like? Everybody digs Bill Evans!

    Bill Evans is a gift. Steven over at Inthebassclef championed his albums for me. I have a number of grey market recordings of his in my own collection. Good to hear this reissue has not disappointed. 😎

    When I see something priced at $900, I think, how can I save about $800? For those who can afford it, it might be really beautiful music, beautifully recorded. I think Bill Evans plays beautifully. But is there ever any humor in his music? Like Chick Corea. Or is his music all contemplative; with one emotion? No thanks for $900. But I envy those where $900 is chump change. I'm sure it's a well recorded set. I am so glad that I have a great cd player in a situation like this.

    I took the same approach as you Scott and have completed a Frankensteined Bill Evans boxsets with OJCs, Acoustech and Japanese versions. The Cannonball Adderly was the toughest to find clean. I am really pleased with the japanese versions because they are NM and as quiet as can be. Perfect combination for Bill Evans records ;-)

      I recommend looking at Japanese pressings of Bill Evans records as it is easy to find NM/NM- copies and the vinyl is just simply so quiet which really lends to a Bill Evans performance

    Bill Evans… Ahhh such great music. For those who are getting into jazz, Bill Evans and his trio’s is a good place to start. Complex at times but beautiful. You get drawn into the music because of his piano playing. I glad AP has reissued some of his catalogue. That boxset would be a hard pill to swallow given its cost for now. Who knows, I might get the urge. Great look into this release.

    Your right on the boxset being too expensive! I bought it and decided to send it back because after thinking about it the price felt obscene to me. I’m not that crazy about bill…..I like him but not enough for the box. I got into the feeding frenzy when it was announced……I haven’t thought about it once since I sent it back.

    • @ThePressingMatters
      @ThePressingMatters  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mark, I'm glad to hear about your experience with it. I'd feel pretty bad spending that much on any box set. I do like Bill Evans too but I wouldn't listen to it enough to warrant it. I'd be terrified of damaging a disc and never play it. I see that behavior with some of my expensive one steps and UHQRs.

      @@ThePressingMatters A good alternative are japanese 70's pressing; will cost you in aggregate about the same as box set but you can at least buy them in individual copies. The OJC are of course much cheaper and pretty damn good. I actually regret selling my OJC copies after I bought the box set because I'm not always in the mood to flip record every 1 or 2 songs.

    Hi, I also got this release a couple of days ago :) Allow me a minor correction: the more recent Acoustic Sound Series' releases have their jacket manufactured by someone else that Stoughton Printing Company. I would have never noticed it by myself, I've read it on a forum. The series started with Stoughton, but then there was a change. Check the hype stickers, you will see Stoughton mentioned on the earlier LP's of the Series. On the more recent ones, the hype sticker was re-phrased, no more Stoughton, just "Tip-On gatefold sleeves printed on high-grade board". I've read somewhere Stoughton was overbooked. Maybe he became too expensive, I don't know. No complain. For me, the jacket of this Bill Evans LP feels and looks excellent as well.

    • @ThePressingMatters
      @ThePressingMatters  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, thank you for your comment! I was aware there had been a change in an earlier release, maybe Evans 65 or We Get Requests? I guess it's continuing and I'll have to change my wording to Stoughton style gatefold! At any rate they are just as nice, perhaps a tiny bit narrower, which is actually a good thing.
      Tell me how did you like the record. Did you hear any issues?

    • @Domonkos.Siegfried
      @Domonkos.Siegfried ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ThePressingMatters Yes, Stoughton is such an icon (in the US) it's hard not to call by this name anything similar :) I have just opened it for checking any visual default (there was none) but not listened yet. @@ThePressingMatters Hi, I can report that indeed, I could hear the tape wow/flutter on this album, on spot occasions throughout the album and notably during the 2nd track of Side B (Solo). My copy is flat and well centered, my rig is decent (SME Model 15 TT, with Series V arm) but even a budget TT would hardly have a speed error high enough to cause this level of flutter. I’m almost sure the issue comes from the 55-year-old tape. I also suspect tape degradation, as the upper-end (but audible) frequencies are weak. Maybe the tape was not the best, maybe the remote recording gear (at Town Hall) was faulty? I believe it is impossible to correct this type of speed variation error in the analogue domain (you would first need to convert to digital for that).
      Having that said, this is not very disturbing, the listening pleasure was good and I prefer to buy maybe weaker AAA’s than pitch corrected/enhanced ADA’s, I’m glad to own this piece of Bill Evans’s discography. Although my personal taste would go towards less “accessible” jazz recordings, I’m building my own record collection and I felt some Bill Evans’ should be included too. The hype, Chad’s approval, the relatively affordable price and the easy availability (in Hungary) of the Acoustic Sounds Series from UMe makes those releases a good choice for the audiophile collectors like me :)

      @@Domonkos.Siegfried Thank you for your informative comments! It's something I'll have to listen for again, on that track, which I've only heard twice. Something for everyone to keep in mind for sure. Sometimes we have to choose between AAA with some issues or a digitally corrected version. I also didn't find anything objectionable or unpleasant, but perhaps I am more tolerant when choosing an AAA cut from a neatly 60 year old tape. Thank you so much for watching!
