  • Hey guys,
This is the first video in a new series I'm launching called "Dropping Drum Knowledge." The subject of lug count can be both overlooked and controversial to many drummers. I wanted to share my POV from years of experience playing many types of snares, and get a conversation going. Looking forward to you comments below!
PS - starting in 2019 I'm going to try and post 1-2 vids each month. 👍
    Best regards,
    Blake

GREAT video! I was a 10-lug drummer for years until I started listening to 8-lug snares and now it's 8-lug ALL the way for all those reasons you mentioned. However, it can be a little difficult to find 8-lugs today. Thanks for posting!

I’m convinced! Drum Center Portsmouth NH recently did a video on the new Ludwig Black Beauty 8 lug compared to the long-standing 10 lug version, the 8 lug was much more appealing to me

I agree with you! I had a Gretsch USA custom 8 lug 5.5” snare that I loved now I have a 10 lug and to me it sounds thinner and just to tight always. Also the feel is harder and less forgiving, you know everything you said. I also hit a 6.5” steel shell A&F snare and like you it felt sooooo good and sounded so sweet! That really did sound like it’s price tag a step way above the average snare!

I actually agree, i had played a Tama 85 swingstar 6 1/2 x14 which is 8 lugs for years, also with triple flange hoops, then bought a maple 10 lug, complete difference.. tuning die cast hoops is alnost impossible, everytime you turn 1 All the others loosen. they are too heavy. i never under stood 10 lugs on a bass drum either.. why would you need More lugs when the ideal sound is just past half turn each. my 8 lug bass drum sounds amazing and has an awesome feel. Gretch drums has a 5 lug tom tuning which i think is brilliant.. tough for new hoops, but makes sense

I think you just concivnced me to stick with 8 lugs. I plan on eventually purchasing a Keplinger black iron (steel) snare 8x14, and I've heard the 7x14 with 8 lugs before and it sounds amazing as is, but was considering special ordering an 8x14 with 10 lugs, but all the problems you mentioned with 10 lugs, I have with my current snare (10 lug pearl bronze free floater). Going to research the topic a little more, but I think for the most part you answered all my questions

I have an early 1980s Maxwin by Pearl 5 1/2” X 14” 6-lug wood shell snare with a built-in under head dampener. It sounds great and professional when tuned tight with a Remo Clear Pinstripe head on the Batter. It sounds just as good un dampened as it does when slightly dampened. When slightly dampened, it produces a hard “knocking sound “ similar to the snare used on the song “Stars” by Hum & also similar to the Snare used on the album ‘Wither, Blister , Burn & Peel’ by Stabbing Westward. Less lugs don’t necessarily mean lesser quality but instead, a different type of sound. I’ve had this snare since 1989 when I got my first drum kit and will never get rid of it. As a matter of fact, it’s currently in use with my 1987 Pearl drum kit. Additionally, I also own and use an 8 lug ( or in this case 16 with 8 lugs on top & 8 on the bottom) 8 1/2” X 14” Pearl Limited Edition Maple Snare with a Remo Coated CS Black Dot head, a 10-lug Pearl Sensitone Elite 6 1/2” X 14 steel shell snare with a Remo Coated Emperor, and a Pearl Short Fuse Snare with a Coated Emperor.

I LOVE my 8 lugs snares (and JUST getting into 6 luggers as well!!). I have 2 drums in particular that I find using so much: I bought 2 blank WorldMax shells online (1) 1mm 6.5" Rolled Aluminum w bead, and (1) 1.2mm 6.5" Black Nickel Brass w bead. I had the guys at Drum Supply in Nashville drill for 8 bridge type lugs and the FANTASTIC INDe Throw Off. Finished them off with 3mm Triple Flanged hoops, 20 strand wires and they just WAIL!! Gonna build another couple!!: One with a 3mm Trick Aluminum, and another with 1.3mm no bead Black Nickel Brass shell.

I agree and prefer 8 lug snares, but sometimes what a track wants comes from a 10 lug drum. I especially like 10 lugs on deeper drums, like the two 14x8’s I have. Great vid!

I'm coming around to this thinking myself. There's a cheap Yamaha Steel drum on my band leaders practice set that sounds deeper and drier than two Pearl and Premier 10 lug vintage snares I own. The so-called inferior snare just sounds better to me.

I am a true covert. Own one of the newer eight-lug Black Beauty snares and three Slingerland 60s/70s Deluxe Student Model (Neil Peart's long-time #1) snare drums that are eight-lug. The Ludwig and Slingerlands made me a believer. That you for explaining the science behind all the factors that make them sound, well, better.

I have 4 snares, 3 have 10 lugs, 1 has 12 lugs. I always liked the 10 lug drums, they tune well. I've played on 8-lug Acrolites & I did like them.
My Ludwig Coliseum is 8 inch deep with 12 lugs. It is a royal pain to tune. It has lock nuts on the lugs to prevent tension rods loosening.
Anyway, quality drums with 8 lugs are available. The 8 lug design is usually to cut cost. But some elite drums, such as solid shells, use only 8 lugs.
    I'm very happy with my 10-lug & 12-lug drums.
I've only seen & played a few 6 lug models. Not good!

I heard, long ago, that the 8-lug Radio King was much preferred in the studio than the 10-lug Super Radio King. The shell's resonance is supposed to be better.

  • @davidwak680

I certainly agree that 8 lugs are both easier to tune and easier to tune to different pitches. All the way up to the 60s 8 lugs were the industry standard.

Thanks for the video. I just built an 8 lug snare from an old Tama Granstar floor tom. I wanted to go with 8 lugs, because #1... I don't currently have one, and #2... I wanted to be able to successfully cover up the 16 dowel holes that I filled in the drum with the new lugs. After watching many videos on 8 lug drums... I decided to go with 3mm thick triple flange hoops. I wanted to go with cast but couldn't justify the additional cost. I see that you chose the cast option, and I'm sure that the following comment was part of your reasoning. 1.6mm hoops on a 6 or 8 lug snare can create 6 or 8 wide areas where the hoop and bearing edge are under less tension than at the lugs. The stiffness of 3mm triple flange, S-hoops and cast hoops, helps to prevent this and provide more consistent tension between the head and the bearing edge, around the entire circumference of the drum.

  • @Eurodrummer666

I never thought that about 8 lug snares! I just thought modern 8 lugs ones were done this way to save on production costs.

    • @blakepaulson
      @blakepaulson  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Yep, 8-lugs (or even 6-lugs) are used on lower quality snares to help keep the cost down. However, on high-end snares, 8-lugs provide the benefits that I discussed in the video. It's an ironic and unfortunate trend in "big brand" drum manufacturing over the last few decades... the modern "improvements" can actually lower the quality of your tone.

Nice playing, bro, and sounds good! It would be nice to hear isolated, but your snare seems to have a pleasing ring to it in the the mix. I would try pitching down a bit and maybe getting a bit more snare sound from the bottom heads. But overall very cool!
