    As a camera geek I have greatly enjoined this series, and the blog posts. I am one of those weirdos who thinks the M5 is the best thing since sliced bread. It is a camera that grows on you the more you use it. I have never used an M6, but I think people would do well to splash out for one rather than another camera that might become an expensive paperweight at any moment.

    I chose the Konica Hexar RF as an alternative and I don't regret the purchase. It is a fantastic camera and the lenses have incredible quality

    they need to update this video.. today $2900 - $3500 for a leica M6. Xpan 2 is $4500 - $6500 , Konica Hexar RF ikit is $2100 - $3199. Prices are ridiculous right now. Hipsters have been driving these prices up. in 2016, M6 was at $1400-$2100.

    If you wanted to name a few much cheaper cameras then M6, but with similar specs, why don't you name Minolta CLE or Voigtlander Bessa R series? Minolta CLE is basically a Leica (but ch, its a secret). They have an M-mount, TTL, apperture priority (had one before the M7 to be true), a couple of cheap Rokkor M-mount lenses. The price is around $1000-1400 on Ebay. The situation with Bessa is the same, M-mount, TTL (in some of them), much cheaper then Leica.

  • @Skux720
    @Skux720 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    No mention of the Voigtlander Bessa cameras? They are literally M mount rangefinders and beat the Leicas in many ways like 1/2000s shutter speed, a brighter finder, film door window, SLR-style film loading, and aperture priority on some models which makes street photography much more agile. Voigtlander lenses are also far cheaper than Leica glass and perform just as well.

    The M7 is a great camera with a meter built in. I just bought the M7 over the M6.
    I paired it with a Zeiss Biogon 35mm f2. A quality and less money alternative over the Sumicrons and better I think
    over the Voigtlander. I may add, that by many knowledgeable users/opinions the M7 has the best shutter Leica ever made.

    Hi, I wonder did you really forgot to mention about the Voigtlander rangefinder line. Like Voigtlander R2, R3, R4, etc. Or do you have some specific reasons, you thought that they are not alternative for M6.

    • @sinerehber
      @sinerehber 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Bessa line was obviously made to better Leica's but they became at least as expensive as Leica M6's in the last years.

    • @FilmPhotographyChannel
      @FilmPhotographyChannel 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You have to consider the M6 is potentially 36 years old and the Bessa line started production in 1999 (I think). The Leica build quality is worlds better than the "Voigtlander" which is really a made-in-Japan Cosina sold under the Voigtlander name. Similarly, I owned a modern 35mm Zeiss Ikon which is a very pretty Leica mount rangefinder introduced in 2004. It was also built by Cosina and literally fell apart in less than a year (I bought it used in 2010). The ASA ring, which is embedded in the shutter speed dial, disengaged as well as the body cover literally developing a hole that exposed the body in the back of the camera in the very spot where my nose touches the back of the camera. Yes, my nose wore a hole through the camera cover! These Cosina-licensed Voigtlander and Zeiss cameras don't compare to a proper Leica in terms of build quality but at the end of the day, you can use the same great lenses and achieve the same photos as a proper Leica for a lot less money.

    • @sinerehber
      @sinerehber 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@FilmPhotographyChannel I can't accept your general claim that Leica's have better build quality than Bessa's. My R2M was in repair last week and the repairman who has been a Leica approved repair partner for decades, was impressed with its quality. Leica has good cameras but believe me, they also have many with low quality which easily get broken. Cosina on the other side has probably produced vast amounts of junk level cameras but they were also able to provide highest quality if needed. Many renowned camera giants had either parts or complete cameras produced by Cosina. Finally, as a German resident, "made in Japan" has surpassed Germany's for half a century.

    Before I purchased my Leica M6 with 21/35/90mm lenses, I used a Contax G1 with 21/28/45/90mm lenses.
    Before my Contax G1, I used a Canon Canonet QL17 G-III 35mm rangefinder with fixed 40mm normal lens. The Canonet was known as the "poor man's Leica."
    I also used the medium format film rangefinder, the Fuji GW670 with fixed 90mm f/3.5 normal lens. Due to its large size, it was known as the "Texas Leica."

    @gregturner2668 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You missed the Zeiss Ikon ZM, which can be had for about €1500 and quite often they are boxed and mint condition. It was ostensibly a Leica M7 but with more reliable electronics, a brighter viewfinder and I think a faster sync speed but don't quote me on that.
    Also if you can find me an Xpan in the UK with a lens for less than an M6 with a lens please do share the location! Here they tend to sell for £3000+!

  •  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Actually, I'd say that the M4-P is exactly an M6 without lightmeter, they have the same framelines and almost the same body, but the M4-P is made in Canada, which makes Leica geeks staying away from it.

    Been lusting over an M6 for a while, probably because it's so coverted more than anything because I like SLRs more than Rangefinders. Crazy that the Xpan is an alternative to that. I own an xpan but the thought shooting it in any other mode but Pannaramic doesn't sit well with me. Feels like balsphemy really! But I get it. There's no way I can afford and M6, still paying off the Xpan.

    Olympus made an Olympus M1, to compete with Leica in making a smaller camera when in the 1970’s cameras kept increasing in size, but an SLR instead, so they got sued by Leica and had to rename it the OM-1, :) all the OM cameras are my favorite cameras

    Really?
    I sold my M6, M3 and M2 and now I only have 2 Voigtlander Bessa R2a
    The Bessa R2a is more comparable to the M7.
    A Bessa R2 (closer to the M6) is even cheaper!

    • @jorgemtrevino
      @jorgemtrevino 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had a Bessa R for a few months. Beautiful brilliant viewfinder but cannot stand heavy use like mechanical Leicas. Also, the aluminized plastic of the silver Bessa started showing its base quickly; as finely made as Voigtländer lenses are made, the cameras are just not up to that level. They are in heart and soul just rebranded Cosinas.
      Last year I had the good fortune of trading my M6 and IIIf plus some glass towards a lightly used M10, but hung on to my other two Leicas: a button rewind M2 with quick take-up spool and a black lacquered MP purchased new in 2003. The brass bodies of the M2 and MP are much better than the magnesium alloy of the M6. Ditto the viewfinders.

    • @diegolabrador

      That's a very diplomatic and noble approach!
      I came to understanding that, for me, as long as communication takes place successfully, pronunciation in general (and of brand names especially) does not play any role whatsoever. I probably used to be a stiff-butted pretentious prick about that. But by now, personally, I expect no one to "overpower" their maternal languages' general tone (and therefore altered pronunciations of brand and probably also material names) just for the sake of my individual nitpicking.
      This is a good thing for me since, a) otherwise my head would just explode here in Germany
      b) I can see people more for what they say and not how they say it
      and ultimately c) I don't have to stop loving the American pronunciation of Gouda.
      Thanks for reading and even more for providing the content that you present on your channel!

    The Xpan only has f/4 available , which can kinda make things hard in low light . The frame lines for regular 35mm just feel weird to use ( especially after shooting pano ) compared to a Leica . Too much elecronics to fail in Xpan too , the Leica would be less likely to become a paper weight .No way i'd risk buying an Xpan at current prices .

But other cheap alternatives like Hexar RF, Bessa R Series and Zeiss Ikon have doulbe price nowdays. So im not sure its best decision to get expensive japanese copies. of course there are some exception for example you can still get CLE with working meter around 400$ if you lucky.

    No Leica lust here, an the price is just a big no no for me. The Contax is just a wallet empying accident waiting to happen. I'd go for the budget Voightlander Bessa L, which would leave you more money for lenses..... Or go digital ( 😉 ) with the Epson RD-1.
    PS: You also missed out rangefonders fron the like of Canon and Nikon, but Japan Camera Hunter has now successfully increased the prices of those with his JCM price hiker show.

    The Hexar is a really cool camera but is unrepairable should something go wrong .

      @@NicosPhotographyShow Well an M series Leica is a walk about camera. You have it over your shoulder or in a shoulder bag and when you see something interesting you use it. I'd keep mine in a bag when I went to work or out with the family or for a walk in the woods. I'm lucky enough not to have to worry too much about losing a £1,500 camera if I do something dumb like drop it in a river or leave it is Starbucks. I don't earn a living with it. I could live without it and save up for another camera. But a £3,000 camera feels very different. It would be difficult to say to my boss "Oh I left a £3,000 camera under my desk and someone has walked with it". It just sounds dumb. Why the hell would you leave something that valuable lying around? So I'm uncomfortable because the price of it makes it difficult to use it for what it is supremely good for. I'm sad because that kind of ruins a wonderful thing.
      I have a Canon T90 with a 50mm f1.4 that I put together for £80. It really is built like a tank and makes images as nice as the Summicron 50mm on my M6 to my eye so I'll start using that more. But I do turn into Gollum whenever I pick up my M6. It is soooo lovely to use. Maybe I should just throw it and myself into the fires of Mordor and be done with it!

    I believe that atleast 50% of M6 buyer are not photographer, most of them are collector who would never shoot.
