Hi Tom , I have procrastinated to your videos for years, my undergrad to now my PhD. Could you please put this procrastination series in a single playlist so that I can procrastinate with efficiency every time?
1) forgive yourself for procastinaing previously 2) redefine what success means 3) remove distractions 4) break down your project 5) re frame tasks as input based 6) start by writing things up
I think 5 is misnamed. As described, TF says think about the task more in terms of putting in 20 minutes of effort rather than directly in terms of the outputs you are trying to achieve. I understand that focusing on getting the effort going is valuable. I don't understand the disregard of the outputs. But I don't feel this really is focusing on inputs. To me, reframing tasks as input-based automatically means to think about the task in terms of what information you need to collect to help you carry out the task more effectively. That is certainly a useful perspective as it takes you from an unknown (how exactly will I finish this big harry task) to a known (I can't finish this task without X, so let's focus on X). Perhaps this is what TF had in mind when he said Input-based, but if so, it wasn't clear to me when watching.
1. Forgive yourself for past procrastinations 2. Redefine success for your situation (e.g. low on time) 3. Remove potential short term distractions e.g Phone 4. Break your task into smaller sub tasks so its easier to manage 5. Work for short bursts at times e.g 20 minutes at a time then rest then repeat 6. First set up your task e.g set up your tabs or set up that you work on Here you go or you can skip to the summary in the video 8:55 Your welcome babes enjoy life
There's a lot more under number three though. Also if the person watches the whole video, the contents are more likely to stick than after just reading or watching a summary.
Step 2: realize you both can exist within this space and if one is, like yourself, doing fantastic, why use your platform to disable and not help. cheers bro
Thomas, with every video you post, you are curing me of my academia induced depression. Since I've started University, I have been more and more convinced every day that my failures were part of my identity, that I was not good enough and I had something missing. But then you post a very, very well documented video which explains my feelings as behaviours that I can change not as self-fulfilling prophecies I cannot escape. The media is overflowing with hyper-motivational content, but nothing compares to your realistic refreshing approach. Thank you and good luck with all your future plans! I hope the self-intervention is working.
You will do it; if you didn't fail at tasks you wouldn't need an education, teachers deal out failure because we must. If you are in higher education you've proven your successes already, it is just the raising of the bar. So don't look at the distance you need to leap look at the difference in height since your last successful task. I'm 48 and have repetitive dreams about failing my degree which I passed really well 20 years or more since. I'm also terrified of students and other teachers, so I focus on learning and sharing worthwhile knowledge for the sake of a better world - even if I cheat the political curriculum at times, and I avoid my colleagues and retain my student character - my classes are always over subscribed as a result, and my colleagues probably feel more intimidated by me. I'm fortunate to have a likeminded boss. My nemesis is the length of student identity numbers and number dyslexia. We are all human.
Agreed! I love how his content dissects 'motivation' into realistic bits unlike those 'inspirational videos' that present unrealistic levels of achievement.

Thomas Frank AWESOME! Thank you. You should write a book and sell it this time. You can add any new lessons and tips as you go to future editions. I really like your channel. You have a good and clear voice so you can do your own audiobook version. I am saving these 3 to a playlist, but they are so easy to lose in the folds of “favorite/motivation/etc.” Great tips, some I had never heard before!
heyy Thomas! I was hoping you could make a step by step video on how to get your life together(because you seem so IN CONTROL of yours!), or if you already have videos for specific steps, then make a playlist in order, because whenever I come onto your channel , its like a sea in here and I get really lost. great video by the way!
Opened TH-cam 3 hours ago when I was supposed to be studying. Saw this video at the top of my front page. Was intimidated by the thumbnail. Closed TH-cam, put my phone away and went back to studying 👌💯
Love this! One thing that also helps is Owen Fitzpatricks video telling me "you've got this" tip for my fellow procrastinators: believe in yourself, you can do this hard thing, because you've done hard things before in the past and you can do it again! You got this!! Let's go do it!
I'm currently working on writing my Masters thesis... and I'll tell you, number 6 was SO important for getting me started. Just outlining the parts of the theses and setting up the formatting so that publishing later would be easier has made the actual act of writing it go so much smoother. Setting up my reference manager (Mendeley is a lifesaver!!!!) was also immensely helpful.
That Sailor Moon Mug is everything! Thank you so much for these tips. I'm definitely a Chronic Procrastinator. I've picked up the Forest App and it has been my go to for whenever I need to get into that "Flow" state. What has also helped me is wearing my lab coat before I get into my Pomodoro session. It allows me to picture myself getting into Physician Assistant School. I know that if I don't work hard this goal isn't possible. So it allows me to focus.
You Look Like such a lovely sweetheart I think those around you would forgive you for anything, yet I doubt you do anything that needs forgiving, so forgive yourself. There you are.
Thanks senpai for this series. The last two weeks were the period in my life were I procrastinated the most, even if I had to finish something very very important to me, the presentation of the startup I am working to. The thing that made the difference to get out of there was having enough sleeptime at night again and meditate every morning. Having more energy allowed me to break the "big elephant" into smaller parts that I was finally able to eat, like we say here in Italy. Ironically in that time you produced these videos. Life always gives you what you need to satisfy your needs I guess. But we cannot realize it if we are asleep :)
I am just a small voice but I just want to say thank you to Forwago. This program helped me to build self-confidence and taught me how to believe in myself. More people should find out about it. Thank you, Forwago!
im writing a segment of a newsletter for my school on how to stop procrastinating. it took me a week to get round to it. they say the best way to learn something is to teach it
Thank you so much for making this video. I have one month for my exam and I keep getting distracted and feel bad about it later. I have written down the summary and stuck it on my study table. I really hope it works. Will let you know in few days. Thanks again😊
0:40 Oh god! This is so hard when you worry so much about the past like me, trying to forget the past and look present and ahead is a hard task deserving a video by itself... but is crazy how we make our present miserable just because we were miserable in the past! IT'S LITERALLY CRAZY and doesn't make any sense and yet we do it non stop. Learning from the past is important but we (or at least i) feel stuck in there, instead of reseting and trying to form a new streak, a new path, i keep looking back and stuck the one i just took even though i know is bad. I think my tendency to overthink is what leaves me stuck, i spend more time thinking and worrying intead of acting, trying to create the most effective pathway out fear of wasting time while paradoxically wasting time by overanalyzing, getting stressed and then discracted. Making just 1 third, if any, of the work concluded and mosty just at the end of the day.
The image of a coffee shop at 3:38 is one of my favorites - T.H. Roberts in Dolgellau (Wales) - you have to try their Rarebit on toast! Its a bit of a drive just to go to study - 1 hour from where i live (which i have done before), but its a great place to go after climbing Cader Idris.
THE NEW ODYSSEY TRANSLATION IS ON AUDIBLE!!!!! I am SO pumped. I have been waiting for that to drop since the print version came out. Some works are meant to be listened to
Andrew Farrell Is this Homer’s “The Odyssey” you are referring to? If so, it should interest you to know that that epic poem was originally recited; it was spoken long before it was ever written (though there are several theories on this, so it’s a little debatable). *Edit* : I had not watched the end of the video before replying to your comment. I now know you were clearly referring to Homer’s “The Odyssey.” I think you also may have known that little information I included above. Nonetheless, “The Odyssey” is pretty great, though the quality depends on the translation (some translators are more competent and, depending on the translator, the epic will either be in prose or poetry). It’s sort of a matter of personal preference, but I’m sure the version on Audible will be just fine. Sorry for the unnecessary rambling, and enjoy the audiobook.
A Mind for Numbers is a brilliant book for anyone wanting to learn anything "New". This book is currently on my nightstand I try to read or review the previous chapters before going to bed.
The to-do list for misc. things is really good. I have had the same trouble of doing everything but the actual task too. Meditation has helped to put aside the upcoming thoughts or just automatically passing them to a list. I mean, all of the thoughts are not so important after all, but at least you have the list to put them on if they really are
Hey Thomas, please make a video on "what would be the best time to go for exercise" .... This question has been seriously concerning me for the past few days... It would be really helpful for me if you answer my question.... I hope you do.... And KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. YOU ARE REALLY GREAT....
I am looking forward to you TEDx talk & Online course in the future. I get a lot inspiration from your videos. I even started reading books (I used to hate it so much). Thank You for sharing this amazing information.
It's 11pm now. I managed to procrastinate on my presentations for yesterday and today. It's really no big deal to do it, but I have to do them on Wednesday and Thursday.
Great tips, Thomas. Basic human nature will always play a role in procrastination. The good news is that it is still doable to get out on the swamp of procrastination and improve your productivity.
Mr Frank thanks for making this procrastination- in-depth series video You have been doing a tremendous job in teaching misguided humans like me on how to live disciplined life. I'll be forever grateful to you but there is a problem i am facing for which i require your assistance. I am trying to get my master and i am trying to work super hard but everytime i sit to study i am unable to concentrate and sometimes i just dooze off. I hope you can provide any sort of guidance on this issue of mine. Please keep on uploading and may you blessed by karma for the action you are doing.
I'm always blown away by the amazing content you deliver with such genuine personality. It's super encouraging to see how much you care about the growth of your audience. I've been following this channel throughout college for a few years now, and it's hands down one of the best channels I've found on TH-cam. Thanks for all the hard work you put in!! It's inspiring 👍
Thanks. I juz copy down all d notes n decide to work on my writing that i have been procrastinating for months. This was very helpful. Today is d 1st of December so i want to become a better me. I'm a severe chronic procrastinator to a point i need therapy n medication bcoz i started developing mental illness. I want to be better n hope i can with your tips. Wish me luck n perseverance.
thank you so much. i like the series which you make. after watching the last video, this week i learned more for my study. i hope this video gives me more power and usefull knowledge. thumbs up 👍
I did some research and calculations and put it in a video a few days ago - it turns out that 5-hours a day procrastination (very common for most of us) equals a loss of $32,500 per year if you earn $25 per hour. If you were to make that money instead and invested it with a 7% return rate... it turns out you are wasting over $454,000 in 10 years and $6.5M in 40 years. Ouch!!! If you ever feel stressed out about money... you might want to do something about that.
I use sub-task and pomodoro to get job seekers started on their resume. 10 minutes listing previous employment, 10 minutes on skills and abilites and 10 minuts on future goals. If it works - great, if not - we can open a discussion about the real conflicts.
After struggling with doing many things in 24 hours , I felt that there is something like procrastination. But still did not clear between ' lost in focusing to do things' and 'procrastinate' Or these are same terms.
Thank you..Great advises..And I'd like to add my ways for stooping procrastination. If you want to start something count 5 and take action or try to motivate you find some motivation...Remember your big goal and fight for it!!!
Hi, Thomas! Thank you for this series, it really inspires me to do something! But I doubt about Pomodoro. I read some Russian psychologist and she says that timers kills spontaneity. And spontaneity gives us energy, so we can just makes ourselves hate the task using Pomodoro or timers. I haven't seen researches about that, but it seems to have some seed of truth, because It happened to me. I really stoped enjoying some things because of timers, thinking about those things like I was forced to to them instead of wanting to do.
Procrastination and not studying hurt me when it came to quizzes or tests, but procrastination was actually helpful for my papers, I was so motivated last minute for my projects. I have never had a B on a paper in college, and finished with a 3.9 GPA, why did this work out this way? I think that I procrastinate because the end result was always a decent grade if not a great one. In real life though, procrastination is killing me!!
1. Forgive yourself for any prior procrastination. Be aware that there is no perfect time in the future to do it. And the stars wont ever align. Things will forever be imperfect. And right now the time is imperfect but its just the right condition for you to be able to do it. 2.Set a new realistic idea of success-- One reason for procrastination is the "You'll fail either way" mindset because of the delay. Now have a clear idea of what ur new success means like. 3. Remove potential short term distractions.-- optimize/change ur workspace for ur ONE THING you decided to do. (Note, theres no perfect workspace.) list down a small errands that may come up so you can do them later. So u dont need to be trap to doing a smol other things u think u need to do before really doing the thing you SHOULD be doing. 4. Break your task into sub task. -- goal just to make it into the " next" subtask. 5. Reframe your task into input based. Work 25 minutes only. Pomodoro. 6. Spend your first session to set up /makin it convenient for the hardest part.
Hello Thomas, I find your videos very helpful and smart, and as someone who's getting into independent contractor work online as well as going through a low-sugar, low-carb diet and new sleep routine, I find much of your advice to be relevant, practical, and positive. Lately I feel that I didn't do as much online work as I could have, and I know that I sneak in little distractions and delays. Maybe this video will help?
Part 3 - the final part - is up! th-cam.com/video/YokGiK29k74/w-d-xo.html

Amazing video @Thomas Frank! This is so helpful and very useful as well Im gonna get to work man, thanks!
I really like the summary at the end. I hope you do that on all your videos.
I love the humor that you inject in your videos!
I don't know what I would do without your videos
Please please make a video about what is the healthy food you cook and what do you usually have at breakfast! :D
Watching a video on how to stop procrastinating while procrastinating an essay. I am really moving forward in life.
I use sub-task and pomodoro to get job seekers started on their resume. 10 minutes listing previous employment, 10 minutes on skills and abilites and 10 minuts on future goals. If it works - great, if not - we can open a discussion about the real conflicts.
Looking for "original" comment of "im procrastinating watching this procrastination video"
Tan Cheng Hao i'm procrastinating watching this procrastination video
Not much of those under this video because Thomas made fun of it under his precious video :)
The Sailormoon mug is everything.. 😍
Thank you for making this series.
Thank you for part 2.
Gonna try some of these today! Thanks!
Okay, again amazing stuff. I love the usual incorporation of research/entertainment
Just what I needed. Thanks man
@1:19 there is a spelling mistake, it says "tim" instead of "time"
Thank you for this series it’s help me a lot!!! 💕💕
counting the minutes for this one! thank you so much for uploading
I always come back to this video for motivation. I'm almost finished college...

I thought the same thing

😂😂😂 that was crazy
Thank you for the motivation
1. Forgive yourself for any prior procrastination.
Be aware that there is no perfect time in the future to do it. And the stars wont ever align. Things will forever be imperfect. And right now the time is imperfect but its just the right condition for you to be able to do it.
2.Set a new realistic idea of success--
One reason for procrastination is the "You'll fail either way" mindset because of the delay. Now have a clear idea of what ur new success means like.
3. Remove potential short term distractions.--
optimize/change ur workspace for ur ONE THING you decided to do. (Note, theres no perfect workspace.)
list down a small errands that may come up so you can do them later.
Soooo useful thank you thomas!😃
My teacher is making our class (and others) do work based on these vids - 2:31 is exactly what i'm going to say since its due in a couple hours

Hello Thomas,
I find your videos very helpful and smart, and as someone who's getting into independent contractor work online as well as going through a low-sugar, low-carb diet and new sleep routine, I find much of your advice to be relevant, practical, and positive. Lately I feel that I didn't do as much online work as I could have, and I know that I sneak in little distractions and delays. Maybe this video will help?
Dude thank you so much for this
Yes thanks just on time i have beem procrastinating lately.
Your timing is impeccable 😱
Great video full of valuable information, that is, if we only were to implement it
You are getting me through my exams this semester. Thank you
