I read the Autobiography of Charles Barkley in 1992. I still remember he wrote a piece of paper and asked to deliver it to Bill Laimbeer before this fight game. It wrote: “Dear Bill. Fuc* you. Love Charles.”

Laimbeer set up a table for Pass Sports when he came into a restaurant that I worked in to sign autographs. I asked him to write "From the best center ever"...he said, "I am not going to do that." Very matter of fact...no smile no nothing. It was great.

@@AcousticOlli the fighting was not what made the NBA great back then, but you had to be tough. Today, guys flop all over the place and 7-footers hang out around the perimeter launching 3's and just stand around watching while the ball is in the air. When NBA players foul, you have to watch the replay to see it.
Even if you are right on the floor, you usually cannot even tell if a foul was committed.
When Laimbeer fouled --- the fan in the top row could see the foul.
Laimbeer made sure EVERYONE knew he fouled.
    That was GREAT.

@@jamalliwalug6639 The '80's players were WAY more professional than today's players. They stuck with their team through thick and thin, played their asses off every game and every play, instead of just watching an opponent go in for an easy layup since no one is challenging him, and played under rules that made the play much tougher physically. Today players are more concerned with their own stats instead of making sure that everyone on the team contributed their best.

Jorden, Pippen, Barkley and Bird despised the way the Pistons played. It's one thing to play physical, but it's another thing to try to cause a career ending injury to a star player. They all said that the Pistons would stick a foot under a rebounding player to cause him to break, or sprain an ankle. At the center of this was Isiah Thomas, who pushed the big guys into taking cheap shots. This cost Thomas during and after his career and he lost long-time friendships due to the way he would initiate cheap shots.

Warriors are warriors. But Bird did not like Laimbeer. I think because of Laimbeer's play that could ruin other players careers. That is not a good legacy to have although you can admire his tenacity.

    • @roderickcampbell2105

@Richard Charles Hi Richard. The odd thing about Laimbeer was that he had class OFF the court somehow. His teammates respected him and he respected them. Well, aside from that it went kind of downhill although he had a good career, talent, and played on championship teams.

Agreed... except for Stockton. I remember a game where Bill got 4 of his 6 fouls on John in a game. They were hard fouls, but John just shrugged them off. He even stopped Malone from going after Bill. The result was Bill fouling out and the Jazz winning the game.

It is all exactly the same now. Every play, high pick and roll, force the switch. Then stepback and get a 3 or force a double team from the perimeter and hit the open shooter. Or cross up the defense for an alley oop

Laimbeer is still famouse for being a Thug. But most people seem to have forgotten that Chuck was known to play the bad guy too. I remember him going bonkers at a referee because he felt the guys face and not his elbow should have been called for the foul(true story). Yeah I don't think he meant to spit on a little girl either. But he was trying to spit on somebody.

Boston and Lakers played the right way. .They would get physical with ya and sometimes it would go overboard. But that was by no means part of their strategy. They were "Hey you can do all this stuff, but we still a better basketball team and we just keep our heads more often than not, We gonna beat ya.
