  • Its been an amazing few weeks here at former USAAF/RAF Membury for the Night Fright team.
Sunday 19th May 2019 saw Charlie Walker and Neil Jones fly in with the Aero Legends C-47 Drag 'em Oot, the first C-47 landing at Membury since October 1946.
Then on Monday morning (20th May) the team flew out of Membury to DZ 'A' in Saint Germain-de-Varreville to drop a stick of RCPT Paratroopers into the heart of Normandy, recreating what would have taken place from Membury as part of Operation Albany on D-Day 75 years ago.
The drop was part of a documentary that the Night Fright team have been working closely on, collaborating with North One Television and Guy Martin for over 12 months remembering D-Day 75. The feature length production “Guy Martin’s D-Day Landing" airs on Channel 4 on Sunday 2nd June 2019 at 8pm.
A special thanks go to @RCPT @RCPTUK @Aero Legends and everyone who helped make this hugely significant day possible and to Heritage Air Services for putting up with TV cameras for over a year.

Hey Guy, that doesn't look like a TT motorcycle. I hope you had a wonderful time flying in a piece of history. Our town here in California has sent over our own aircraft, tail number 348608 with the yellow cockpit Id letters "CD". She's "Betsy's Biscuit Bomber", a C-47B built in 1943. It was flown from Paso Robles California, the aircraft is part of the Estrella Warbirds Museum collection there at the old WWII Estrella Army Air Corp base outside of Paso Robles California. This aircraft's last U.S. missions were flying the Berlin Airlift, it was sold to Israel and was later purchased back from the Israeli Air Force and refurbished, there is an Israeli language sign painted on the interior head-door that roughly reads, "The only replacement for a Dakota, is another Dakota". The plane was a military transport it's whole life and never converted for civilian us. It still has all of it's original equipment to include the 1943 over-sized desert type air-scoops atop the engines nacelles and the gear it used for towing combat gliders at Arnim. I hope you get to see her and all the other flying in.

So we'll just ignore Merville Battery, Pegasus Bridge, and Ranville, you know, where the BRITISH AIRBORNE actually hit their objectives, the 6th Airborne Div under Windy Gale showed the way on how to run Airborne Ops. Pity Browning and 1st AB Div didn't pay attention later on. Best tribute to US Airborne boys is the defence of BASTOGNE; and the crossing of the River Waal. Classic definitions of Airborne tenacity in defence, and determination in the attack.

Doing "Bridge too Far " Film a few years back in Holland was more authentic - different from these 'Brit accent' people in this movie....but we only had a dozen C-47's.....besides the big movie stars some of the older pilots actually flew in the battle....one was a P-51 American ace who still flew!

Because its an American aircraft operated by American crew dropping American paratroopers from an American occupied airfield. Our interest is centred around the US involvement as they were based in the local area.
