I think your math is off, laying hens at the most consume .3lbs of feed per day, not 1.5lbs. Our flock typically averages even less in the warm months or when we get malted grain from the local brewery.
I’m thinking of starting a chicken coop and I am doing my research first. Going with egg layer hens first. So I really appreciate the information. I do have a question. What is the best option or product for treating fowl harming bugs that you have found that works best for the money? Also what to avoid? I know a few things can harm the chicks lungs so I want to be as safe as possible.
The best natural pest deterrent for us is DE (Diatomaceous Earth) it can be harmful to lungs if breathed in but it is food grade and edible. As long as you are safe about applying it to the coop and not letting it blow in the chickens faces while applying it is perfectly safe and many people use it. There are other natural remedies out there but very few actually have solid backing at being effective. We’ve attempted using garlic powder in feed but that can be expensive if you don’t grow a bunch of garlic on your own to provide in your chickens feed.
