When you think about it, it erupted from 1983 to 2018. We are seeing but a glimpse in a moment of time for this island's volcanic activity. To think that all the other major islands at one point were above this hot spot and throughout millions of years have moved northwest. With the Big Island made up of Hualalai, Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa, Kohala, and Kilauea adjoining together, in the future Mount Lo'ihi is only 3k ft below the surface of the water, just southeast of Kilauea, 15k ft from the ocean sea floor already. Beyond our time in the future, the Big Island will eventually get bigger and comprised of yet another volcano.
