    Great siege! I do wish there were more opportunities to have fights go beyond the walls in siege battles instead of just ending at the walls. All these unique and hand crafted cities with twisting alleys and they never see any defensive use unless you willingly pull off the walls to use them, which you almost never need to do because the fight will typically end at the walls.

      @@Nick-hi9gx yeah you want the fight to stop at the walls lol but I’d say if we had fallback options that would be great. The ability to set a defensive line and hold the rest of the garrison in reserve in rear choke points would be so ideal. If the defensive line breaks, the reserve can Thermopylae the f outta the enemy army in the alleys and you could essentially gridlock them in an attritional nightmare

    • @DovahFett
      @DovahFett ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Fights carrying on into city streets is sort of a modern phenomenon. During antiquity and medieval times, if the walls of a settlement or castle fell, the battle was basically over. The remaining defenders would typically just surrender at that point, as there's no realistic chance of them turning the battle around and no reason for them to fight to the last man. Resisting the attacking force in streets fights would just make the eventual sacking of the settlement all the more brutal.

    • @Nick-hi9gx
      @Nick-hi9gx ปีที่แล้ว +15

      @@DovahFett This is so incorrect. Keeps exist for this exact reason, as a fallback point. People fought inside Rome, inside Argos, inside Carthage, inside Paris, inside Jerusalem multiple times, and so, so many more. LOTS of sieges came down to fighting within a part of the city.
      If the walls are captured, YOU DO NOT CAPITULATE unless given some sort of deal from the enemy commander. Because that means, by the ancient "rules" of combat, that a sack is incoming. No, you pull back to a keep or fortified position and try to negotiate a surrender.

    I used something similar yesterday. I fought khuzaits so I decided to let them in through gate and make a killzone, worked until they didn't climb the walls with ladders so I pulled back my troops into the town and there was a nice set of barricades and right behind those stairs and a patio, so I placed my infantry within barricades at the entrance to the stairs and my archers at the top on the patio. Last stand proved efficient. With enemy pushing like a giant swarm we've managed to stop them on a shield wall and let archers kill the sitting ducks. Nice that you had inner castle with separate gate to work with in this example

    I actually played this specific defense last night and the enemy outnumbered me by 3x as I only had 550 troops under my command. Fortunately they were only sending one siege tower and a ram at me and the walls were tier 2. And the tower that was sent was on the far left path. What I did, is when that ram started making that final turn to line up with the main gate, I sent a sortie out with all of the infantry holding gate and a troop of archers that i had in reserve. Destroyed the ram and had the infantry hold position there. The archers I moved over to a flanking position to take out a glob of enemy archers behind barricades. The enemy was reinforced and at that point I had lost only about 30-40 guys. Re-aligned my sortie to at the bend in the road on the final approach of the gate and put my archers off the right flank of them and decimated their reinforcements pretty quickly. On their next reinforcement, they sent their entire army at my sortie that time around and I finally had to retreat back inside. But the damage was done, since the ram was destroyed and they could only attack one section of wall, they eventually broke and I won the day!!!
    It was a great battle. Probably one of my favorite scenes to defend and attack on because the castle is pretty segmented.

    You can do it even 200v2000 when they build two siege towers. They are doomed. The catapults normally break these towers, but they fail to do it with the ram. So once the ram is near the gates, you jump on top of it. The troops inside run out to kill you but you're on top. After a while they flee from the battlefield and you capture almost all the 2000 as prisoners.

    Just defended my first 400 vs 1400 and then 500 vs 2400, felt really good. Literally all I did was build 4 catapults (my guy's an engie/archer so it's fast and they're fire versions) and was picking via sniping the guys pushing the ram to slow it down, it was significant enough to give the catapults time to destroy it before it reached the gate and then it was just a battle of attrition. Reinforced one side of the wall heavier with trooper than the other and went to the other one myself and was picking off guys climbing the ladders. Skills like "make the difference" which boost your troops morale when you get a kill mixed with the fact that headshots demoralize enemies works just great, also the banner that reduces the melee damage your unites receive by 15%, just chef's kiss

    There is a much simpler way to do this (I assume this is more known) but I call it the straxagy,
    Step 1: acquire two handed weapon (axes work best)
    Step 2: use “ambush” function and destroy siege batteries with axe
    Step 3: spawn at ladders
    Step 4: smash the skulls of your foes as they climb up the ladder
    This strategy works best with cavalry and Stugian heavy axe men.

    i had a very similar gate hold last year on my aserai run. i made a mod that gave veterans the chance to have maces, and it was totally the force multiplier that swung the battle in our favor. i only had about 50 or so veterans displaced amongst 400 or so mameluke soldiers and footman. the veterans with maces being able to deal armor piercing damage while being surrounded by chaff made such an incredible line that held for days

    My best strategy is to ambush them when given the choice and have your troops charge at the enemy and keep them busy while you use a polearm or ace to destroy the rams and towers. After, retreat and then engage the enemy and use the catapaults to knock out the enemies and when they get close, standby the ladders and shoot down the guys climbing up the ladders by aiming to get headshots. The enemies will eventually flee. Repeat as needed until youre strong enough to sally out or auto resolve.

    Hey, have you heard of the banzai charge strategy? This strategy is first defeating the thing that will destroy your gate by going outside, then the ai will stand behind it, hold your formation, if you can get at least a few archers to weaken the army in front of the gate, after they're weak enough launch a charge.

    • @razorbackfan2356
      @razorbackfan2356 ปีที่แล้ว

      Another strategy is called the dirty move, it's where you make it completely unfair, this is a offense strategy, you put your men Infront of the gate, break it down, then attract the defending soldiers lead them into your soldier, and archer death pit, because your archers will be on the flank out of being able to be shot, then everytime you get further away they retreat then keep doing it.

    If I can take down the siege towers, I tend to just manually pick up the bombs and rocks and toss them at the infantry assaulting the ladders and main gate. It usually goes well enough to force a retreat before I start taking heavy losses, allowing me to win even when outnumbered 3:1
