Oh!! This may be the best Friday night TH-cam video ever! Centralia has so many emotional dimensions for not only the people who lived there in the 60's & 70's, but those of us who understand how significant it was for families to have to part with their homes (perhaps for generations) because of this tragedy. Many dimensions out there about this topic, though! Thanks for what appears to be a new look at the topic. Wish I could be there! Someday, maybe I can have the time and $ to get down there and experience it myself.

That geyser at the end though... Wicked Epic..
Just a damn shame that certain people don't know how to treat things and areas by leaving their trash all around and not picking up after themselves..
Thanks for another great explore JP..

The book I was referencing from is called "Fire Underground, The Ongoing Tragedy of the Centralia Mine Fire" by David DeKok. It can be acquired at the Pioneer Mine Tour in Ashland, PA or you can go to daviddekok.com to buy it directly.

"The stuff they use to grease the tracks of The Phoenix at Knobels"
I could smell it in the air when you said this. Crazy how those olfactory senses spark nostalgia.

Right before you got to the toilet in the woods, the camera panned to the tops of the hills. Those hills are actually culm piles, which is waste coal, dirt, and rock from mining.

Thank you for mentioning the need to keep the place clean and take your garbage with you. We do a volunteer cleanup at least once a year. The locals arent very upset about the graffitti. What they are upset about is the throngs of people painting then whipping their cans into the woods. October 2018 we took several TONS of trash out, that we all hand-picked...spray cans, paper, plastic, drink containers and soooo many tires. PLEASE people seeing this...stop making a mess here!!

My mom grew up in the area and my great aunt lived in Mt. Carmel. When we visited she would drive down graffiti highway (it was opened then and there was occupied houses on the side of the road) to go somewhere. You could see the steam coming up from the side of the road. There was no bypass then you drove through the town and it was no big deal.

Kudos to you and your compadres for the respectful way this was done. Too many of these videos for things that once were, are shot by people who show no respect and rummage at will. Except for the dead kitty, and the impromptu outhouse, I didn't see anybody even touch anything. Quick question, was the reason for the geyser caused by the heat of the mine fire? Was the temperature of the water above what might be considered normal?

JPay I recommend looking at a documentary called the town that was I just finished watching it it's very poignant and disgusting the town's history and its end and I mean it really breaks my heart knowing this town had to die like it did because if that were to happen to the town I live in I wouldn't know what to do because I've grown up and it all my life I wouldn't want to leave it and I certainly wouldn't want to watch it be destroyed around me that alone would be cruel enough

I feel bad for the people who still live there. Not for what happened, but for people trespassing. I guess it's better than nothing in a way because it is being remembered, but probably not in the way the residents wish. In another lifetime I could see myself living in a place like Centralia. Long forgotten yet clinging to life because sometimes that's how I feel too.

That underground coal seam fire is expected to burn for another 250 years. If it hits another seam along the way, who knows where it could go. I believe it covers 3700 acres right now.
