I was impressed with the sound these diesel race engines made, and the crazy redline they had. It pushed the limits of what diesel engines can do.
Too bad that diesel powered cars aren't popular in the American market, especially after Volkswagen's Dieselgate scandal.

I can't speak for other states but in California it was prohibitively expensive to equip an everyday car to pass the emissions tests, even if the manufacturers cheated (which they all did, not just VW). Luxury cars could consider the additional expense and maintenance, but generally chose not to.
Trucks are allowed much higher emissions, so there are plenty of diesel trucks.

Peugeot guys were building dohc 4 V engines _way_ back in the day, Harry Miller "borrowed" a lot of the valvetrain engineering from them, and created an engine that later was bought by Fred Offenhauser, and Harry Miller's neighbor was Ole Evinrude, of outboard fame, who removed 2 cylinders from a Miller engine to create the first outboard, as it was lightweight aluminum.
