    Geoff Downes (The Buggles, Yes, keyboards), Steve Howe (Yes, guitars), Carl Palmer (Emerson, Lake & Palmer, drums) and John Wetton (King Crimson, UK, bass/vocals), took the world by storm with their eponymous debut album, globally the biggest-selling album of 1982, and the single Heat Of The Moment.

      He's saying the band called "YES" not saying yes to confirm anything. Asia was a super group full of seasoned musicians from other groups. Carl Palmer is one of the main reasons I wanted to become a drummer myself.

    Asia was an early MTV phenomenon - their first album, released in 1982, sold nine million copies, largely thanks to this song and its accompanying video (hence MTV): The band was labeled a supergroup, consisting of four luminaries in British progressive rock. Guitarist Steve Howe and keyboardist Geoff Downes came from Yes (and are both in that band even today), and the latter had also played with the very first MTV phenomenon: The Buggles of "Video killed the radio star" fame. Drummer Carl Palmer had played with Atomic Rooster and, above all, Emerson Lake & Palmer. But the one with the greatest renommé of all was bassist/singer John Wetton, having played with King Crimson, Uriah Heep, Wishbone Ash, UK and, even Roxy Music. Asia's later albums saw diminishing returns - fans of their old bands were disappointed in Asia being more a hard radio rock band than "progressive", and later in the 80s FM rock as a whole dwindled in popularity as hair metal took over. Asia however persevered (mostly), releasing a number of albums with several lineup of whom Geoff Downes was the only ever-present member. In 2006, this classic original lineup returned to great accolades, but today only Palmer and Downes remain. Steve Howe focuses exclusively on Yes, and the man, the myth, the legend John Wetton tragically succumbed to cancer in 2017.
    Asia remains one of THE most legendary names in AOR/FM rock, and besides the music, many also remember them for their consistently amazing record sleeves, courtesy of legendary painters Roger Dean (primarily, and to this day) and (more briefly) Rodney Matthews.

    I had this album when I was in HS. I'm a metal head through and through but I have always loved "originality" in all genres even rap and country which are my least favorite genres. Asia was just special. Incredibly talented "super" group.
    One day, Brad, you'll realize that the lyrics are important, but you're not reading a book. The instrumentality of the musicians is just as, if not, more important. At this point, Brad, you'll really start enjoying the music like you're supposed to, like Lex. Let her rub off on you, dude.....you'll enjoy the music so much mor.

    What's made this and the other standout Asia songs work is that despite the huge production, they're modeled on 60s "wall of sound" pop songs. You could easily imagine Ronnie Spector singing this song, especially since the 1, 2-3-FOUR! drum beat is taken straight from "Be My Baby." I dare say that's who John Wetton had in mind when he sang it.

  • @philvallee645
    @philvallee645 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have no idea why but this song in particular takes me right back to my senior year in HS. This song is very much of the moment but still catchy today! The early 80s and late 70s were such an interesting time for music as all the rock staples of the 70's from Zeppelin to Sabbath were all in the air at the same time as The Police, The Cars (which you need to hit more of btw) Split End, New Order etc... and the New Wave sounds were just so different from anything we'd heard before. I think this Asia song for me is a lament where the guy remembers the times he had with this woman but time has moved on for them both... I can relate..now lol!

    Saw Asia live just a few short years ago, they are still incredible. John Wetton, Geoff Downes and Carl Palmer put on a great show (Steve Howe had gone back to play with Yes by then). Carl Palmer played the most amazing drum solo I've ever heard in my life, he seemed to go on forever and just kept feeding off the energy of the crowd. They are still putting out new music, though it doesn't get the air time that it should, that's sadly just how the music industry is these days.

    A Lifting and Re-birth of Rock and Roll - into, a new age of it's innocence - with continuity: Asia, Europe, Big Country, Men at Work and many others...But, as The Fixx proclaimed, in the song - 'Stand or Fall' - "There will be no exaltation."

    Asia was a super group, made up of the lead singer from King Crimson, Guitarist and Keyboardist from Yes and drummer Palmer from Emerson, Lake and Palmer. There songs are amazing. Thanks, great reaction. Chris
