    “I’m born below sea level, so for me this is in my DNA,” Geuze told VICE News. “I see the world differently because I’m from the Netherlands, a culture obsessed with sea level.”

    I lived there and went to school on the island from 94 to 1997... I love that island and visited my old boarded up house recently. It's a shame all that beautiful property and we were the last people to live in that house :/

    I grew up on Governors Island. He built up the South side, which used to be called Liberty Villiage. Yes water was violent. The seawall and the street circling the island was always frozen in the winters. The water would hit the wall and it would freeze.

    Now, after the land elevation technique, the next step is to build a red light district on top of it. Very Dutch touch! Also known as the "cherry on top of the cake". #sweetbitch

    Crazy to see governor’s island after all these years . We lived there in the early 80’s . Living on the island was an amazing experience for a kid . This is when it was controlled by the coast guard .

      What would you suggest he use? Dam? Has a different meaning in Dutch, for us a 'dijk', literally a 'dyke' is used to keep the sea at bay, a dam has more niche uses. I used the term in my undergrad paper, didn't get any heat from my supervisor.

    what so special about elevating the ground to prevent stormsurge. i don't need to be an engineer to to this.

    • @allisondoak9425
      @allisondoak9425 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      AriVovp it would have been good if he was given a chance to explain it terms of being a soft engineering solution, it’s the shape and positioning of the elevation and the emulation of natural structures to create resilience rather than the fact that he just utilised elevation that’s significant. Even so these solutions can seem a bit obvious to anyone who’s stood on a rolling hill facing a storm surge but in the context of how engineers have historically utilised complicated hard engineering solutions with limited success in promoting resilience the growth and success of soft engineering and inspiration from the natural environment demonstrates a revolutionary change in our approach, another aspect is that there is a tendency for these solutions to be more cost effective than the traditional model

  • @DeJulius_Caesar
    @DeJulius_Caesar 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    How does this apply to our current problems? It's not like you can build a series of rolling hills on New York's, San Francisco's or any other major city's coast line.

    • @luked3717
      @luked3717 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      san francisco is a hill

    • @michaelqdlap
      @michaelqdlap 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can build artificial hills in critical areas

    • @DeJulius_Caesar
      @DeJulius_Caesar 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Luke Buxton Although most of the city is located on a hill, that won't stop a decently sized tsunami from obliterating all the buildings that stand on said "hill".

    • @DeJulius_Caesar
      @DeJulius_Caesar 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      michaelq San Fran is out of space as it is, you would have to destroy certain areas in order to make room for protective hills

    • @michaelqdlap
      @michaelqdlap 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      DeJulius Caesar
      It's protection from storm surges, not tsunamis. What do you mean space, it's an artificial island.

    • @MinixDim
      @MinixDim 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nope, at least the government certainly is not that great at running the country but for a small country like Netherlands we have done quite some things in this world, saying that the Netherlands isn't so good at all even though we are continuously high ranked on many different lists (positive) and are a country that is constantly heading towards the future.
      Overall ranked countries in Europe:
      - Netherlands #2 www.thrillist.com/travel/nation/best-and-worst-countries-in-europe-ranked
      - Netherlands #11 www.thetoptens.com/best-european-countries-live/
      Overall ranked countries in the world:
      - Netherlands ranked #10 lifestyle9.org/worlds-best-country-to-live-in-2013/3/
      Top 50 container ports:
      - Netherlands #11 www.worldshipping.org/about-the-industry/global-trade/top-50-world-container-ports
      Of course you can't make opinions from just these lists but it at least gives you an idea of how The Netherlands is a pretty good place to live.
      Especially keeping in mind that The Netherlands is only populated by 16,900,726 people (1 Jan 2015)
      *(I'm not saying it's such an amazing country I mean i got stabbed in the head for being white by some Arab but at the same time it's all pretty good)*
