I know the candlestick holder as a courting candlestick. The idea is if the family approves of the young man who comes calling to court the daughter of the house they could raise the candle higher so they have more time to talk. If they don't like him, they can lower the candle down and he has to leave when the candle reaches the top of the metal. At least that's my recollection. I have one too

That bench is a keeper,I have donated car loads of stuff over the years to Goodwill,so when they won't sell without a sticker,I just take one off of something else that I think it would sell for,my step son works for Goodwill for 15 year's and it bothers him so much on the huge amounts they throw away,so one little sticker to me is fine,it's getting sold.

Karen , you took the words right out of my mouth!! I love thrifting so much that I always say ‘even if I came into serious money, I’d still thrift because I love ‘the hunt’. I also find my self becoming very ‘frugal’. I rarely will pay full price for anything .

🐞On the new edition: plant Leland Cypress all along your fence line. They offer great privacy and grow at a reasonable rate. Trust me do it now. Plant no more than 6’ on center. Next summer you will be thanking me. 🐞

The quality on the bench you found is high enough that you can probably use it for the next 10 years and still sell it at really good price. What a find.
My suggestion for the wall to the left of the door in your bedroom closet would be a pegboard system where you could put little shelves and little baskets and use it for accessories. Even little hooks or pegs for Rogers caps and ties. The angled wall would make a great spot for a full-length mirror.
Such a great video Karen. The door to the bathroom could be a sliding barn door type if you can't do pocket doors. No in or out to worry about but I could be watching to much HGTV...haha. Happy to see all is coming along nicely. xoxo

So true about nomal retail prices. I can not make myself pay them anymore. I buy everything second hand. Clothing, decor, gifts, it is just a matter of looking for it the whole year round, I find almost everything. I am a (small) reseller so I find these things for myself when I’m shopping for resale. This attitude even extends to my groceries these days. Here in the Netherlands we have an app that is called ‘To good to go’. You buy food that is the date of today and would otherwise have been thrown away, for a low price. I eat it that day or freeze it. I only have to buy some extra things occasionally like fruit and veggies and other stuff. I eat more luxurious food and on a budget. It is a win win situation. 😃

The way that candlestick holder works is that you wind it up as the candle burns down so the flame is near the top.
Candle holder: move that little lever all the way down to the bottom, put your candlestick in there, and every time the candlestick gets shorter than you move the lever upwards to raise the candlestick

Me too. I will always shop at thrift stores, even if I became a millionaire! You could have used those little gold frames for your wedding, set them on the tables at reception. Give people throw away cameras, and guests could take photos and have frames right there.
KAREN, I REALLY learned something today. I saw that bench top and I thought it was a homemade bulletin board. I would have walked away if you didn't pull it out and study it. After seeing the art and then the clamps and of course the bottom underneath I got excited with you! It definitely helps to study things if you don't know what they are before you walk away! Great find. I hope you're using that for your own home!
Karen, as the candle is burnt down you turn the little bar and it cranks the candle up, like a tube of lipstick hun ❤ Adore the bench!
Winding Candle Holder with Adjustment. I’ve sold a few, made by Blacksmiths who work in a local Heritage Village, showing visitors how such items were made traditionally in Colonial America.
I too was at Cocalico on Wed. I thought the sale was not really a good sale!!! Their furniture was quite high even with the discounts but, it was fun to putz around. Then I went inside. I saw the pillow that struck your eye as well but $66.00 I felt was over priced so it remained there. I did buy 2 cutting boards that were reasonably priced. This is one of my favorite stores local to me. (Strasburg, Pa.) I have a lot of decor items from Cocalico in my home. I loved the wicker baskets you purchased at Good Will along with that beautiful wrought iron piece you found. FANTASTIC!!!
Lavender I've been a drywall finisher since 1992, be sure your finisher prefill their gaps with 20 minute hot mud, also there are a lot of screws missing in the sheetrock, unless the rockers are returning to screw off. Have Roger or your finishers finish the screws, every 16" is a stud a 2x4 . Believe me after 31 years in this trade, I know the short cuts that construction workers try to take, but if the prep work is not done, you will see flaws when your addition starts to settle, looks like you are going with regular cornerbead. Tape on cornerbead is the best so if accidently hit ,it wont crack, if they use metal cornerbead which is nailed on, some use screws, have the finishers tape all of the cornerbead if it is metal, that way you don't get cracks in the future.

The candle is a reproduction from the olden days of courting. When a man and woman were courting in a parlor of the home a candle like that was placed in the room. When the candle burned down to a certain point that meant the man had to leave.

Your home addition is nothing short of spectacular!! We did a major addition to our house almost 30 years ago , nearly doubling the square footage. It has been wonderful. The one thing that bothered me was that the kitchen became an inside room, losing its double windows. I was running six to eight can lights most of the day along with the track over the sink. We put in a "sun tunnel", I think its called, and problem solved! There has been no maintenance, cleaning, leakage or other problem. It is about the size of a dinner plate and is flush with the ceiling. One of the best improvements we have ever made. This might work well in your office?? I rarely comment on videos but have seen probably most of yours and absolutely love the way you do everything. If I had a basement I would love to copy your system🙂

I agree....shopping at retail stores is very difficult. I'm so used to 2nd hand everything. Thrifting not only saves you money but it is exciting to find bargains. Wow what a find with that bench. Are you going to keep it or sell it? Oh I would keep the Michael Korres purse. Love the addition.

I know what you mean about the full prices!!! That's a "Courtship Candle" you found! I purchased one many years ago from Home Interior. The story goes, when the suitor came over to see his sweetie, the parent would raise the candle to whatever height they saw fit to allow for visiting time. When the candle burned down to the top of the metal it was time for him to leave; it didn't matter if you had more candle you could raise up in the stand. This was the story told to me by my grandmothers. You made a lot of excellent finds on this trip! I'm so excited for the progress on the house! You could always create a jewelry wall on that angled wall in your closet (just a thought). 🥰

Master Bath Pocket Door Choice: in the last house, which Rose and I designed and built, we put a Pocket Door from the Bathroom to the Bedroom. Since we’re empty nesters, the doorway stayed open 95% of the time. Only needed to be closed when all the granddaughters were in with their grandma doing something that required 3 or 4 supporting cast members, like getting hair or make-up for something like prom or a big special outing.

I’m just loving watching all that’s happening, we are selling our home and buying another home next year. We are just getting our toes wet again as this will be our 3rd and final home, because I retired early and my husband has just retired I’ve been selling online for about 13 years. We know that we need space for our inventory and but def don’t need a large home anymore. Thanks for putting the thought in my head we need to make sure this home is accessible, and easy to grow older together in. So thanks much I never thought about doorways. We so appreciate following your journey and wish you only the best😃

The new addition looks great! Were they unable to fit a linen closet in the bathroom? It seems like that would come in handy. Or you could always install nice open shelving for storage. I know you were excited!

I would keep the bench! Just beautiful!!!
Just a couple of suggestions. First of all with the deep closet put the shelving on either side of the closet front-to-back and then connected to something on the back I think that you will get a lot more use out of the space. Second when you think you have enough electrical outlets add at least two if not three especially in your kitchen and your best room. Unless the lighting in your bathroom already has a outlet on them I removed both of the lighting over top of two bathroom sinks and when I did the outlets were covered so, now I need to find an electrician to come put at least one electrical outlet in each bathroom so I don't have to dry my hair out on the back porch LOL
There will be 2 outlets near either side of the vanity 💜
