New Google Sites Adding Links to Parts of Site

- How to add Anchors into the new Google Sites. Anchors allow you to link to specific parts of a Webpage with the Google site you have made. This video shows a workaround to achieve that. Great for educators creating websites for students, or students using them for Portfolios etc.

Agree this is not a good idea since it opens a new tab. I tried using the Embed, adding anchors, and hyperlinks but that doesn't work either:

Q: Is it possible to create a page and the page button (at the top) is a link itself? So just clicking on the page redirects you somewhere else in a new tab.

Thanks for your video Phil. I am wondering if the heading link functionality has again been removed by Google. I am not able to see the links in my published site. Please advise.
All good Phil. I have answered my own question :-) For the link icon to appear in the published website, we need to activate this function in the Editor by going into Settings then Viewer Tools then Anchor Links. Also, I broke several links when I renamed the page containing the headings to which I was linking. I was able to insert refreshed links in Editor mode and all the links resumes working OK.
Hope this is helpful to others.

After editing the internal links, it is good practice to deactivate the Anchor Link visibility using the method described above and toggling off the Anchor Links.

This is great, but I notice the link to the "anchor" is opening in a new tab. Is there any way to make it open in the same tab, so that it looks like you're navigating within the same page? Thanks! :)
Its not the best solution google stopped it so only this way at moment :(

@@Dillinger86 It looks like in the old editor you could write some custom HTML and avoid opening a new tab, but with the new editor this is not currently possible (as far as I've been able tell). It seems like Google is slowly moving over some of the old features, but this is not yet one of them. One solution (while ugly but it works) is you can add the table of contents component and hide all of links except the one you are wanting to show. This is an ugly solution because it can't be placed inline with other component, but it works.
@@Dillinger86 You could also possibly use the embed component, and instead of clicking 'By URL' you could use 'Embed Code' and then enter the following HTML: Click Here However you run into the same issue of it not being very practical or pretty. (Also you may need to wrap that code in an for it to function properly)
@@tyleredwards2147 I figured it out, what I was doing was using a page link & pasting it in, instead of using the internal link
The way I do it:
Go to plus at bottom right. Hover over plus and you will see “New link”. Click. Paste anchor link and give it a name. Use as a subpage for quick navigation from menu. Alternatively just use the insert “Table of contents” function.

I must be missing something... I click publish (it doesn't open in a new tab), so I click preview and I don't see those little link buttons next to the headers? Can you please help me? :)
Hi, Neil, that's strange, preview won't work, have you named the site or has anyone on your Admin Disabled the publish site option? When you click on the publish do you get a black box at the bottom saying view site or anything?
@@teachblend I can view the site, it just doesn't pop up like your video. It also doesn't have the pictures of the little anchors.
@@njf84 open another browser and input the REAL url of your websites, and you will find it.

Hey man! I got an assigment from gsites. The problem is the new tab, u have any way to fix it? I have to use the navigation bar to link to sections in the same page, any possible way to do it? Sorry for my english it is not my mother tongue. Also I'm a bit in a hurry, sorry for bother lmao
Ha ha no problem. I’ve not heard anymore updates from Google on this! It’s not actually supported by Google and was the best I could come up with. You’re English is spot on by the way! Sorry I couldn’t be more help mate

For me, this opens up a new tab, which is both inconvenient and slow. How, can one navigate between anchors within a page without getting out of it?
Christophe Caloz unfortunately this is the only way of doing it at the moment it does open a new tab! Looking into a fix

Hey, still not clear how you created those links on the topic headings, can you be more detail, each time I try publishing it does not work.
You publish the website. View the website. However over the heading. Select the blue link chain icon next to heading, Copy this and done
Not working, opening on a new page. If using the Embed and force to open on top doesn't open on self opens inside the embed.

Sorry but this does not work for google sites currently as it does not allow to publish without making any actual changes. Anybody know how to solve this in 2023? Google should have added a much simpler since it is very common to add links to sections.
Does not work all the time in a cell phone for some reason. I think the redirect notice screws it up.

There is a way to do it where it links to the same page using the table of contents under Insert tab.

@@blobskate Not currently, this is the best workaround I have found. Its unfortunate as its a functionality Google actually stripped out from the old Google Sites
