Truck driver here...and I love they came out with this truck since everything is going emissions free....but I would like to see a hybrid model where an electric motor would assist uphill and from a standing stop at a red light to help keep up with traffic as well as a disel engine for mileage. In my opinion, that would be the perfect truck 🚚
Look Up Edison Motors if that is what you're after. They make a series hybrid truck that is always propelled by the electric motors, and the diesel motor is a generator. Similar to trains. They guys who own it are pretty cool dudes too
Diesel electric was great for almost 100 years. Now, we can make micro turbines and experiment with different fuels and variations of turbines. Turbine generators will always be superior to batteries, and once done right, better than diesel generators.
It’s been done in Europe, I believe. There is an electric motor on the trailer powered by a super capacitor. The capacitor gets charged from regenerative braking and assists the truck diesel engine when starting or other heavy load situations. The capacitor should last almost forever. It is not a battery. An extra connection to the truck tractor is required as is a computer that tells the electric motor to assist the diesel. I don’t have numbers, but it sounds promising.

To get one of these Teslas to perform like a diesel semi, the weight of battery cells vs fuel is ridiculous. If you load the required cells on a Tesla needed to let it run as far and fast as a diesel semi, the weight exceeds 90% of the total gross volume legally allowed on highways....leaving 10% for cargo. Diesels with full tanks take up something like 15% of the maximum legal gross volume, leaving 85% for cargo. So with rough numbers, a single Tesla semi will only be able to transport one tenth the weight of cargo that a diesel semi could. One tenth. These won't be taking jobs any time soon.
Even if it was towing something it would be less weight than a diesel puller would have. Anyone actually watching what happens when you put a trailer behind a electric vehicle would know this is trash.

The only ones relatively unaffected will be specialty/off grid trucking, as it requires more complex decision making that's better suited for humans. In 5 years, we'll start to see these delivering goods. In 10 years, it'll be the majority of highway trucking.

The only ones relatively unaffected will be specialty/off grid trucking, as it requires more complex decision making that's better suited for humans. In 5 years, we'll start to see these delivering goods. In 10 years, it'll be the majority of highway trucking.

I’m a car guy and love the sound and feel of a good old combustion engine, but I appreciate electric vehicles for what they are. As a truck driver I can see how the droning motor might be irritating so having an almost silent motor(s) must be pretty cool.
And if it saves 80% on fuel costs plus maybe self driving in the future so truckers have more me time that's awesome

It could massively help traffic (to a point) by eliminating slow trucks. And would also allow heavier loads to be pulled
