TT500 XT500. Replacing the gear change shaft. Yamaha thumper

Durring a 1982 TT rebuild we discovered that some backyard mechanic had destroyed the splines and inserted a keyway on the end of the gear change shaft.
So here's a simple step-by-step video.
We found missing components. So you need to check against the workshop manual.

I am building my HL for motocross use only. Does anybody know how to convert the gearbox to 3 speed only? with the 540 big bore and all that torque, the other 2 are gonna be useless

BTW I have never seen a tool like that with the handles on the driver head? is it available anywhere? 😲

It is exciting that you have an HL. I planned to build one and had to abandon it when I couldn't source the frame and exhaust and swing on that I wanted. There are a number of HL and XT associated groups on Facebook and I urge you to post your question there.
