Ian Gillan recorded two takes of this song, and all his parts for the album in a single afternoon, so there is a degree of improvisation and spontaneity to this performance that you probably won't hear in any other version of this song. Everyone else had to find a way to follow this. If you want to hear the richness of Ian's voice, listen to the second movement of Deep Purple's Concerto for Group and Orchestra.
Many singers always want to show off their entire range in every song, no matter if it fits or not. Gillan's aim is to bring emotion across and therefore sometimes delivers very fragile performances. He is a very versatile singer. Try his 1990 solo performance of the Deep Purple song "When a blind man cries". If you want to hear a new song with him singing with more edge and character listen to "Lazy Sod" from the new album. He does not hit the high notes any longer and that is perfectly alright at his age. He proved that he can do it. Producer Bob Ezrin says that Ian takes on a character and performs a song like an actor.
Take a vocal journey with Gillan with these tunes as they flow from one to the other …you will not be disappointed 1969 - Deep Purple Hallelujah 1970 - DP in Rock Child in Time 1970 - Gethsemane JSC 1971- Deep Purple Fools 1972 - Deep Purple Shrn. Blind Man Cries 1973 - Deep Purple Place in Line
Ian Gillan is still in Deep Purple. Roger Glover bass player and Ian Paice drummer are also in the group. Ritchie Blackmore guitar player left the group many years ago. He is still making music and playing live under the name Blackmore's RainbowJon Lord keyboard player unfortunately passed away a few years back. I had tickets to a Deep Purple show before the band splt and the show was cancelled. Deep Purple were at their best during the 70s.
Piece of trivia here that I just recently found out about, the rock musicians that performed on this album were the same band that accompanied Joe Cocker at his historic 1969 "Woodstock" performance of "With A Little Help From My friends". These guys were simply awesome!!
Jacqueline hi! Thank you for this reaction - I had sort of the same almost 45 years ago when I listened to it for the first time. Simple request - just carry on! Way to go! And a tiny remark😃 Gillan is still in the band. When you reacted to Portable Door you could see him sing. Only he aged a bit. He’s gonna strike 79 in a month. Millions of hugs to you!
As one says Gillan is still in Purple. They will release a new album in a few days and they have already released three sing so listen to Lazy Sod. But Gillan was in the group 69-73 when he quit. From 84-89 then he got fired. And from 92- infinity :-) Speed King, Anyone's Daughter, Rat Bat Blue are some more suggestions.
This is the original, and Ian did a brilliantly creative take. Of course he didn't have to worry about taking it onstage, but he still set it up to be theatrical. Now, If you want to hear the all time greatest cover of this song, you should dive into Dan Vasc's version as part of his Lloyd Webber collection. I think that it is life changing! In Luke's Gospel, Jesus was so distraught in Gethsemame, that he literally sweated drops of blood. That emotion his darned hard to express in a song.
100 percent check out Ted Neeley singing it, twice! First from the film version, and then check out ''Ted Neeley at 80'' singing it, so you can compare. I've never known ANYONE react to that version! 50 years after the film and he sounds AMAZING. At first it looks like he's miming to the film projected behind him but it's live. He sounds like someone less than half his age, staggering breath control and range still.
I love music, I grew up with Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin and all the bands that wrote the book of modern music, I still have the vinyl, Made in Japan (the best Rock album recorded live of the last century) and I respect and admire how no one for the best rock voice. Ian Gillan But I'm from Spain and it would be fantastic if you analyzed the same song live in 1977 by Camilo Sesto, our best singer who played the same role in the Rock opera here in Spain. It would be interesting to see differences. keep on rocking beauty ❤ Greetings from Barcelona.
Ian Gillan IS in Deep Purple now. Of course, he doesn't have the vocal power and range of his youth. He's well into his 70s, and that voice has seen a lot of wear and tear. Still, he does the best with what he's got left.
I recommend Michael Crawford's live version. It's more musical theater than most versions which tend to be more rock. That makes sense because Crawford was the original phantom in Phantom of the Opera
As a fan of Ians i normally prefer his live performances, but he never did a live performance of Gethsemane. John Farnham's live performances from the 1990's were perfection and a 1994 performance is available on U Tube. Some people prefer Ted Neeleys stage performance, but not many who have experienced John's version.
Want to see this song done right? John Farnham, Gesthemane, Jesus Christ Superstar, Sydney, the final night. Makes this look like amateur hour and Crawford couldn't touch it either.
The voice is not Gillan's only talent. His singing style was and still is unique to this day
The best hard rock voice of the 70's

Nobody was singing like this in 1970.. and this isn’t even Deep Purple.. no one could touch Ian when he was in his prime.
So it is.
1969 Royal Albert Hall! Great.
Totally right poneytrekker8996
I LOVE IAN GILLAN!!! Thank you for the reaction.
Ian's vocals on Superstar are pure magic.

I totally agree.
Take a vocal journey with Gillan with these tunes as they flow from one to the other …you will not be disappointed

I was so obsessed with this album growing up - positively adored Ian 🥰 Thank you for this reaction 😊

I wonder how Ian would have sounded as the voice in “great gig in the sky”.
I would love to hear that!
He is in Deep Purple now. He is 79 next week new album
The blueprint for those that followed.
No one has ever touched this performance. He is in the current Deep Purple, he's 79.

The OG and still the best. An absolutely perfect performance.
Ian was smart enough to take his reward from this production as a tiny percentage of the profits in stead of a lump sum...
Beautiful voice, Epic movie, gorgeous Jacqueline 🌹
Awesome. Didn't know there was footage of this!
I was here for your birthday. Much love wintersun Alex in Texas in a tent ❄️❤️🍹🍹
The Otherone that can do this is Ted Neelly , he song JCS in the Movie. He is very close to Ian Gillan. All others a meerly bleek copies.

Not a good recording of this, audio quality wise.
Please give your reaction to Vanny Vabiola's new cover music video "I want to know what love is", it just released 2 days ago.
