Just to be crystal clear, this Ian Gillan performance is a masterpiece.
So fricking true Brad
It’s like he planned every phrase in minutest detail, but I think it was actually just raw talent and feeling the part.
It's Gillan, not pronounced Jillan. The original and best Jesus. Ian did all his vocals for the album in 3 hours. He set the standard, out of his comfort zone not having done musical theatre or been trained, but he was amazing and nobody does THOSE screams better! Those following him in the role had to copy his improvisations, they became so integral to the song.
@@ronnienose8608
100% correct.
Ian's voice is light years above Ted's or anyone else.
His Jesus IS THE GOLD STANDARD.
@@ronnienose8608 interesting info, and yes,he was and still is the best Jesus. Glad I saw the DP reunion tour in the 80's btw, Ian still had that vocal power then!
Like it wasn't enough that he could sing like this, he had the looks too. That bastard
Some people have it all right? 🥰
Ian Gillans song captures a mans fear of immminent death, just like a soldiers fear before being ordered out of the trench into the enemys hail of bullets. He catches the feeling as he accepts his immminent and cerain death with indifference to his fate. Masterfull performance!
I agree. This song is amazing and the interpretation is just top. But we know Ian pors his soul into his music.
Ian Gillan is my favorite singer especially when he sang Child In Time with Deep Purple 1970 the live version in the TV Studio
It's not just the big notes. It's the vocal journey and pathos.
Indeed ! Not just about big notes!
He still gives me chills with this performance.
Me too!
Every. Single. Listening.
Simply phenomenal.
+ 1
One of the best voices in rock music.
. Best version of this ever. Ian G one of the great voices.
Agree! Ted N was great live but can't beat this.
Camilo Sesto spanish versión is far far away better
@@florentinosanzpastor9556xd?
Arguably the greatest performance by a Rock Vocalist ever. I listen the this every Good Friday.
Listen to Ted Neely's version of Gethsemane
Great choice John
@Stephen Culpepper - Ted Neeley's version is pretty damn close to the equal of Gillan's.
They're basically the only two (English language) performers of this song who seem to really understand what it's all about, IMHO.
Me too!
"WOULD I BE MORE NOTICED THAN I EVER WAS BEFORE?" CAN'T STOP CRYING :(
If you haven't done them "child in time" and "when a blind man cries" .... Gillan is amazing
Dan I am not sure I'm ready for this masterclass in vocals. 🤤
You can do it, I have faith in you ;)
@@ZoeStibiVocalCoach Child in Time needs to be studio version
@@tedr3586 .... The Made in Japan Live version is astounding!!!! And live!!!!
And "Disturbing the Priest" and the live version of Black Sabbath (NOBODY sung it better and more diabolically than Gillan)
Excellent reaction for both technical and emotional analysis. Ian is a special and unique singer. What made this performance incredible was Ian had no benchmark while singing this in the studio..he wast the first...he just waltzed right in and sang his own brilliant interpretation wow
Thanks Charbel! He was always excellent at interpreting the lyrics. His music is full of emotion but not overdone 😭
He took a taxi across town from his day job, dropped this, and was onstage with Dee Purple that same night.
This is what was running through my mind as I watched. In just two takes, he laid down the foundation that every other singer who's ever played Jesus used as their template. No one had ever sung this piece before, there was no stage show or album recording yet to provide context. Just the music, the libretto, and (I would think) some direction from Andrew Lloyd Webber. Somehow he intuits the arc of emotion within the writers' creation and literally breathes life into it. The release of emotions in the scream section is just right, not too embellished or stagey, not trying to wring vocal glory out of every phrase, as was done by many who followed. My favourite part is the final verse, where his low 'n' slow vibrato perfectly matches the sad, sweet chords to make you feel just how weary and disheartened Jesus has become. Magical.
In 1971, I saw Deep Purple in concert in New Orleans. Ian Gillan was unreal. The women in the audience melted.
The "Gethsemane" against which all others have been measured. Some like other renditions but they are all trying to equal this, the best.
Gillan worked all his life for the perfection of musical art and reached the very peaks of world music
soooo emotional. Ian has always been amazing but the JC Superstar performances are legendary.
Gorgeous right?!
@@ZoeStibiVocalCoach seriously. I'm old.. got to see them do this live.. it was life changing. I was just a kid.. won tickets off the radio lol.. but yeah.. changed my life.
@@ZoeStibiVocalCoach so amazing, yes.
lucio pavarotti's favorite all time singer & he stated he was jealous of Ian in a good way that there says it all .
Wow really?! That is incredible Jon. I have to find that quote now... (searches furiously in google) 🤓
@@ZoeStibiVocalCoach yeah should be easy to find it was an interview he did when he sang with Ian ,they asked for him to appear at a concert & his conditions were he would only appear if they could get Ian Gillian to appear also that he wanted to sing on stage with Ian & did it was a bucket list thing he wanted to do & they interviewed him about it .& smoke on the water was his favorite all time song crazy aye ?
In my opinion this is the greatest vocal performance in the history of rock music.
Gillan is my favorite of all time, been a fan sinds the in Rock album....
Gillan was the best hard rock singer of all time
Many singers did the scream just keeping the high note perfectly still, but Ian bends it at high frequency and this makes all the difference in the world
Looks you enjoyed as much as me. Perfect performance that fits to Ian as it came from above…
This man is a gift from God, simply the best! ❤❤❤
Camilo sesto, the best
I saw by last time Ian Gillan on 2018 (with the Scorpions and Judas Priest and Ozzy Osbourne on México City) 4 vocalist over the 60 years.... Gillan have the best voice of the Four!!
He also was the best looking man I've ever seen. I saw him at the Ian Gillan concert in Frankfurt, Germany in the early 70s. I remember a GI had gotten out of hand and he told him to cut it out and calm down. He had class!
Man back in the day I would listen to this album and close my eyes and float. I do believe I still have this on cd ,so thank you and I'm going to reminisce of years gone by and relive some of those memories 🌹✌️
You're welcome! I just listen to all these fabulous old recordings and think about how singing was so uncomplicated back then, it is all autotune here and schnik snack there now 😪
Congratulations Zoe
Your reaction was incredible
Congratulations Gillan
Your performance was unbelieveble
Hi Durval, ☺️ Thank you so much and have a fantastic day
Ted does not disappoint!!!
Ian simply nails it AND takes it to another level!!!
No he does not.
Please: Child in Time ; Fighting Man; Perfect Strangers; Born Again; When a Blind Man Cries.
Fantastic moments by Ian Gillan
The greatest vocalist of the rock genre his operatic aproach is unmatched the range and emotion are unmatched
His screams are typical in the Deep Purple songs.
Apparently he recorded the whole album in hrs and was actually abit drunk doing it lol if that's true then i love this rockstar even more!!
I enjoyed watching you be transported by this song.
I love this performance ❤️❤️
You do know that this song was written with Ian Gillian in mind, he sang it in 1970 before the musical was finished, as far as i know, Ian never "Starred" in Superstar he was only ever on the "Concept Album"
He turned down the gig because Purple was touring.
Ian Gillian is lead singer of British group...deep purple....
And at one point Black Sabbath
Ian was absolutely the best Christ in the play.
Also, I'm interested in your voice lessons.
I used to cringe watching other people sing this. I was weaned on Jesus Christ Superstar from the original vinyl. Ian Gillan's vocal genius lies in the fact that those screams weren't in the score, they were ad libbed. Others have only tried to copy what Ian Gillan created - a vocal masterpiece.
With you 100% on all of that.
Yeah, but not just this song... the whole album. The original double-album, brown with the lyrics booklet inside. THAT is Jesus Christ Superstar. No other version (even the really good movie) even comes close. I tried watching the most recent stage version, and I couldn't even get through the whole thing. So nope... you can keep all the other stuff. (Though I DID very much like Barry Dennen's Pilate in the film too)
in my headcanon the ian gillan recording is the only version that exists
To be crystal clear.
Ian's tone, soul and depth is light years better than Ted's.
Ian Gillan as Jesus IS THE GOLD STANDARD.
To be crystal clear.
AMEN 🙏🙏🙏
Absolutely. No contest.
Love him….
This is the single greatest male vocal performance ever
Still the best... ❤️
Es una obra majestuosa interpretada por la mejor voz del rock “
And I watch another, vocal coach prostrate themselves before the altar of Ian Gillan... 😇
Best of Best❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Ian set the bar so high for this performance right from the start. He certainly made everyone else to follow have to put in the work. What a brilliant version of this song. Webber and Rice were really fortunate to get one of the best rock singers to record the original version of this piece. He was the perfect choice for sure. Ted Neely did a fantastic job following this performance for the movie. Very emotional.
You should also do an analysis of Ted Neely's version of Gethsemane from the movie and also Carl Anderson's version of Heaven on Their Minds.
Hey Eric I'd love to take a look at differently added to the list!
This version is amazing
I agree!
The saddest thing ever is that he never toured with Jesus Christ Superstar because Deep Purple were touring. He would have been wonderful on stage. It would have been amazing if he'd done the film too.
The very best Jesus Christ Super Star vocalist...bar none!
He is amazing!
Have you heard Ian Gillan with DEEP PURPLE singing the song CHILD IN TIME live ,1970 ?? It is truly amazing !!
No I haven't! I need too though!
@@ZoeStibiVocalCoach Take a listen at the "Made in Japan" live version of "Child in Time" :D
Love you and your channel 💖 Thank you for JCS ala Ian Gillan! Love and agree with your on spot analysis! I think a reaction of Bette Midlers STAY WITH ME from concert film DIVINE MADNESS 1980 would be quite amazing! Love you, thank you ❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉
I agree with Bowie comparison, they both had very wide vibrato. Gillan went from A to C!
Everybody who has ever performed this song has attempted to recreate this performance. No one has ever succeeded.
Could be right...
Idk man Ted Neely did a p good job
He is a master of emotions ❤
some of you may have to look this up but I.G. for me is the perfect cross of Geoff Tate's prescision and Steve Mariott's bluesy feel.
Also, I love the movement of time signatures in this song, and specifically the 8/8 "I'd have to know my lord". The accents create a 3/3/2, and the 'my lord' feels like it's taking it out of a standard time signature...but it's not. Just great writing.
If I have my facts right I believe that Ian Gillan threw the high G in there as an improvisation when he was in the studio.
Try "Black Sabbath" from Worcester '83 and loving on borrowed times from Gillan's Inn...very versatile and superb singer.
Love your work Zoe. From a fellow Kiwi vocalist that has sung this on stage 😊👍 Also played Judas in JCSS which is actually vocally more challenging! Imo anyway.
Thanks Greg! It is incredibly challenging for any singer no matter how good they are!
I'm not Christian and I don't relate to the whole Jesus story, but I love this kind of singing. And this is the best singing I've ever heard Ian Gillan do. If there is another song that uses his vocal chops as well, I'd love to hear it!
@@squirrel2000 Child in Time is absolutely awesome, and no one's cover of it comes close to the emotion and power of Ian Gillan's earliest performances of it, but not quite in the realm of this song.
To enjoy the amazing pipes of another rock/folk singer, who had a four-octave range in earlier years, check this guy out:

I love your reactions to Yebba and would LOVE if you did one for her live performance of Boomerang! ✨
Easily the best rendition ever and for mine much better than Ted Neely's whose vocal tone is too thin. It's not just Gillan's technical skills that sets him apart, it's also the timbre/quality of his voice - unmatched.
Yes! Agreed! You explained it perfectly.
Ted Neely seemed to have more raw power and emotion in his version, more anger than sadness.
Nothing better! Just an amazing performance and connection with the human side of Christ.
Ian Gillian said he recorded the entire album in Three Hours! Wowsa.
what? wow that is awesome!
Это лучшее исполнение арии Иисуса в исполнении Гиллана. Я прослушал несколько иаполеениий, но это лучшее! Браво!! М......р. Гиллан!!!
He is amazing I agree Igor!
I always liked that his screams seemed more full than others' because it sounded like you were hearing overtones, not just a pure note.
I think they are all good. I just think they are all different ;)
first time listening to you Zoe .. you are an interesting person ... and i have subscribed to you ..
Thanks Dan!
I would love to hear your take on "Say it ain't so Joe" by Murray Head. The studio version. I can see why they paired them both on JCS. No better Last Supper argument. Thank you Zoe.😁
I love your comments and reactions, your highness :)
😊 thank you
Solo con ver cómo suspira antes de empezar su apreciación se nota como la afecta la interpretación de semejante monstruo del rock, Gilian para mí la más grande voz del rock
Ian Gillan best rock vocalist of all time no one better in my opinion.
He is amazing!
El más grande de todos inigualable
Ian Gillan had the best voice ever. He did the best Jesus Christ superstar voice with not any effort
Only Ian can tell the entire story with just his vocals. Ted Neely is a VERY close second, but you just can't get any better than Ian as Jesus.
Check out the band Rainbow, live in 1977 with their awesome vocalist Ronnie James Dio. The song is Mistreated, just fast forward the long guitar section, but Ronnie had one of the biggest voices in rock, ever!
Fantastic! I'll check them out.
I Have an easter tradition Wher I sing along with this recording of the whole opera. Can't sing this song without crying.
That is pretty cool Tom! I do the same with certain shows too. This song is heart wrenching!
It makes me cry every time 😭😭😭❤
I am a huge JCS fan! Unfortunately this is waaaay over sung at singing comps, but when I hear it like this it does make me tear up.
I strongly recommend the brazilian version of Gethsemane sung by Agnaldo Rayol. You'll be amazed, I promise.
Ведущая просто прелесть! Я все время за наблюдаю, какие у неё эмоции на Гиллана или на кого то другого классного исполнителя.
Love you to compare Ian take on the high note to how Ted did it in the film and like Glenn did it in the London show 2000 and Ben on the Arena tour
Oooo that would be a good video!
Great reaction!!
Please I wanna see your reaction about Sohyang's performance next time.
You raise me up / Bridge over troubled water / I have nothing / Lean on me / Everyone / Arirang alone / Mona lisa / Fate / I'll always love you / Oh holy night / Amazing grace / Where are you / Breathe / Never enough / Hug me / Home / Dream / I won't give up / Power of love / US National Anthem for NBA game / Misty / For thousand days/ I always miss you / Don't forget me / As I live / Do you know / Neverending story / Love poem / The day was sunny kiss / Wind song / Running to the sky / It's only my world / etc..
Please review Child in Time from the studio album Deep Purple In Rock 1970, you will not be disappointed ...
I just heard Ian say after it was all done, Andrew admitted they can't pay him right now, they had run out of money
He accepted a future royalty
I think that was the right move
Definitely a good move!!!
Apparently he did all his parts for the album in a few hours.
Ian is my fav, with Ben Forester my second. However Forester has advantage with change in lyrics….”God, thy will is hard, but you hold every card…” was replaced with superior lyrics of, “God, thy will be done, take your only son…” is so much more emotional and creates such a beautiful arc.
So stunning right? I love it!
Amazing vocals! ❤ He & the original Broadway Jesus, Jeff Fenholt, look & sound like they could have been brothers! And band that had both of them would've been awesome!
Ian Gillan is amazing. Ian and Ann Wilson, would be a great duet.
Not many dared to stand alongside except Pavarotti, Dio, Rodgers, all accomplished in their own right.
It's a hard G, not a j sound, like fish gills, Gillan! Check out his work on Born Again with Black Sabbath and Deep Purple's Machine Head too.
Thank you!
No one ever got the scream right for me except Ian and Ted. Everyone else that can hit the note just does it in a more soft falsetto.
Love Ted. He was in a desert climbing a mountain his acting was excellent.
The debate of who sang it the best is answered simply by the fact that Andrew Lloyd Webber chose Ian Gillan.
Every singer afterwards, no matter how talented ,was trying to match the Gillan performance .
he is having an internal conversation with himself that he is sharing with his disciples
It is perfection!
I love your reactions, please see the version of camilo sesto from 1977, it's pretty good
Thank you! I will take a look!
It is the BEST.
Ian sang on the original studio album. ALW rewrote the clearing of the temple after hearing ian perform.
the G5 (G above high C) was not in score and was ad libed by ian. most tenors do not possess the vocal cord structure to produce this pitch.
Hi Alan! I'm not sure about what to say that people don't produce the structure, there are certainly plenty of singers who can hit those notes.
@@ZoeStibiVocalCoach I'm not an expert. tbh just parroting an article i read. there's a 'who did it better' vid on you tube that's an interesting watch.
as an aside, the original release of GCS was part of our Sunday morning wake-up albums line up as a kid.
He said he did this on the fly, had little time and the whole thing took 45 minutes or so.
Amazing. But he knew the song already... so not too on the fly. ;
🙃
Like Neil Diamond, his pronounciation is excellent. So his tuning is perfect!
THE Jesus, period.
From Wikipedia.
In 1970, Ian Gillan received a call from Tim Rice, asking him to perform the part of Jesus on the original 1970 album recording of Jesus Christ Superstar, having been impressed with his performance on "Child in Time". After rehearsing a few times with Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber, he recorded his entire vocal contributions in three hours.
He was subsequently offered the lead role in the 1973 film adaptation. Gillan demanded to not only be paid £250,000 for his role in the movie, but also insisted, without the consent of his manager, that the entire band be paid because filming would conflict with a scheduled tour. The producers declined, instead casting Ted Neeley in the Jesus role, and Gillan continued on in the band.
Wow!!! That is incredible! And a shit load of money at the time!
Back in the day every long haired, bell bottom wearing, weed smoking hippy had a copy of the “Brown Album” even though virtually none of them considered themselves “christians”. The score and performances, not just by Gillian but by all of the well known rock musicians who played on it, are superb. If you never heard it give the whole thing a listen, just remember the story is a story, not actual fact.
its Gillan, not Jillan
