2:22 can you explain why the harp melody is playing notes outside of the key of C Major? i believe its hitting an F# at one point. when would you do this in a melody and what kind of effect is it supposed to give off?
Yoo you are very sharp for noticing that!:) Just because we were in the scale of C it doesn’t mean you always have to stick to it. A scale in this case C major is just a set organised group of sounds, but sometimes you want to experiment with other flavours too. If you play something Inside the key the word for that is “Diatonic”. And if you go outside the key it’s called “Non-Diatonic”. You can end up completely changing the key midway the song or changing the key while passing chords or a melody in this case just to a little bit of tension and more flavour to it, there are truly no rules to music, as long as it sounds good! 😁 there are plenty of great music theory tutorials on TH-cam who do a better job at explaining it I would recommend you to watch some of it!:)
