Could they even make something like that now. Amazing how trying to combat racism, they could never make something like this which actually DID combat racism.
The saddest one I ever saw, was when Archie woke up in bed, and he rolled over to wake Edith up. After a few times of talking to her, and jiggling her a bit, he came to the realization, that his beloved wife of over 50 years, had died in her sleep. I cried like a Baby, and I'm no wimpy guy, but I think that episode made almost all of America shed a few tears. Archie's favorite chair that he sat in every night when he got home from work, is actually in The Smithsonian Museum in Washington DC. That show was that iconic. It's a piece of Americana. Great channel Guys
@@chuc5o Yes, Bea Arthur had a very husky manly type of voice. True, Jean Stapleton's was not like that, but she did have a deeper voice. My point was that she did the high-pitch sounding voice only for the role of Edith Bunker, it wasn't her normal sounding voice, which was deeper.
The last clip was Jean Stapleton’s final scene of the series. The emotions were real and Carol O’Connor put his head behind Jean to hide his real tears.
@@firebugjohnnypyrooh my goodness! Someone who has actually seen that!!!!! The absolute only small screen performance that has ever made me cry, though Im only 46.
A fresh reminder that the real reason for the success of All in the Family was not the social issues, but the amazing performances by Carroll O'Connor and Jean Stapleton.
Jean and Carroll were obviously brilliant comedic actors but they were even more compelling to watch during their occasional dramatic scenes. Edith going through menopause and Archie trying to stay calm throughout was one of the best episodes in the series. Best ground breaking sitcom of all time that is endlessly funny and rewatchable.
The CBS Saturday night lineup was incredible. Each show is a classic All in the Family MASH The Mary Tyler Moore Show Bob Newhart The Carol Burnett Show
Best sitcom ever especially the first 5-6 seasons one of the only shows where you can crack up and two seconds later have a lump in your throat great actors and actresses. Great writers also thanks for doing this.
The whole show was very serious! It covered all the things everyone was afraid to talk about or confront; brought to centerstage with some really raucous comedy! It was the show which comedy brought the most diverse audience together, white, black, racist, Jewish, sexist.....etc. Norman Lear wrote it and the comedy and subject matter still hold context, content and humor in the 21st century! Great show!!! Way ahead of its time; yet also so timely!❤❤
It was based on a British sitcom from the 1960s (Till Death Us Do Part) that dealt with the same subjects, so 'All in the Family' wasn't quite ahead of it's time as it had already been done before.
All in the Family was one of those rare gems that could have you laughing yourself silly one moment and crying the next. The show is known for its controversial topics and unvarnished dialog, but the true genius is in the family members themselves and how relatable they are. Many of us grew up in a family just like the Bunkers, and watching each character evolve over the years was such a treat. It remains one of the best and most memorable television shows in history.
The one scene of any show which always stuck with me was when Archie came home alone after Edith's funeral. Carroll O'Connor nailed the shock and grief of a newly widowed person. My parents couldn't get over how hard that hit me being only a child. I sobbed for hours. Years later at 41 yrs old I lived that exact moment when my own husband died.
This was awesome! I used to watch the reruns of All In The Family & I watched the spinoff, The Jeffersons when it was on tv as a kid. I don't remember watching The Jefferson's goodbye episode but watching this video my eyes were watering when Edith said I love you to Louise Jefferson
When Edith died in 1980 (even though it was off screen) we were all devastated. She and Archie had become part of our own families in a way so it was like losing a family member to us young adults who had grown up watching the show for 9 years. From 8 years of All In The Family until the 1st episode of the 2nd season of Archie Bunker's Place she was a staple in our homes via the tv. Unfortunately for us Jean Stapleton was ready to move on from the part. She did 5 episodes of the new show during the 1st season and then she was gone.
The serious one about Edith and church had to do with the fact that one of her friends, who was a transvestite man, was murdered during the Christmas season. The character Beverly LaSalle mad three appearances on the show and was introduced as a passenger in the taxi archie was driving whose life he saved. Archie did not know the person was a guy in drag and gave the man mouth to mouth. This sparked Archie's homophobia and a debate with Meathead about human life. At the end of the episode Archie accepts Beverly for who he is. In the second episode where Beverly appears Edith and Beverly become better acquaintances. In the third episode Mike and Beverly are brutally attacked as they walk to the store because of Beverly being a transvestite. Mike is hospitalized and Beverly is killed. The first episode with Beverly is called Archie the Hero, the second is Beverly Rides Again and the third is a two parter called Edith's Crisis of Faith.
God! Thanks for spoiling the entire thing! It would have been so much better and so much more impactful if you would have SHUT UP and let them discover the entire storyline for themselves! Now you’ve spoiled the whole damn thing for them! Thank you!
No, that was not her regular voice. She used that voice for this particular TV series. Also, she was a great actress and she was not a comedic actress until she got this gig with all the family.
Archie was VERY rough around the edges, but with a heart of gold that he did his best to hide. A definite "man of his time", he thought he ruled the house, but everyone knew it was Edith. Even Archie, though he would never admit it to anyone. That last scene was as close as he got to admitting it to Edith.
You have now seen why this is one of the few shows where all the cast won Emmys. I'm sure someone has said or you may have looked at it but Archie meets Sammie Davis is one you HAVE to check out. It is in my opinion the best All In The Family episodes.
“Edith’s” voice in real life was rather low. She gave this character an amazingly memorable voice. It was all her. She was a very sweet lady, and very much expressed compassion and kindness. I use to look up to her as a young girl kid watching the re runs back when they were on tv. Edith’s mannerisms and her wobbly kinda presence… were adorable. As an actress though.. fan-bloody-tastic. She was brilliant.
Edith Bunker. Best female character from the world of television. Ever. She's just good to the core. As precious and sweet as a human can possibly be. But she doesn't take any crap either. Her and Julia Sugarbaker, from Designing Women, are simply the best. Strong women with excellent morals. But only Edith do I call precious. ♡
The African American woman (Louise) was a neighbor of Edith and Archie. She and her husband George moved away and a spin-off show called "The Jeffersons" was created. One of the characters on that show was played by Roxie Roker who was the mother of Lenny Kravitz . I recommend you react to his music.
The last clip was Jean Stapleton's last appearance. Edith's death episode was the most heartbreaking in TV history. Watching Archie devastated by this also was heartbreaking
I was born in 1966 and my family always watched “All In The Family” from the beginning, so I pretty much grew up with Edith. The episode of “Archie Bunker’s Place” where Edith died was so devastating that my parents and my older tough guy/jock brother all cried. I only watched it the time it premiered, and I refused to ever watch it again.
Now you've just gotta react to the Jeffersons ,a spin off of All In The Family with Edith's friend Louise and her husband George( the black version of Archie) they're gonna have you cracking up as much as you did with this one...Peace!

To see another side of Carroll O' Connor you need to watch some episodes of In The Heat of the Night. He portrays a police chief in Sparta, Ms. And you can watch his character change.
Edith not wanting to go to church comes from the two part episode Edith's Crisis of Faith that deserves a reaction of it's own . You won't believe that it is from the 70's and not the 2020's

The Jeffersons is a spin-off of this show and is definitely worth a a look. Louis Gossett Jr. played "George's Best Friend" in an episode, 1975. And it's hilarious!
It took 3 pilots before this show became a series. The only characters that changed were Gloria and Mike. The actors from the 3rd pilot are the ones that stayed on the show. There are videos of the other 2 pilots on TH-cam.
Phil & Sam There is an iconic episode of All In The Family when Archie (Carrol O'Connor) cries after Edit's death (Jean Stapleton left the show) shows that Archie really loved his wife, Edith, very emotional episode.
You guys were great to watch with this. Seriously. Jean is def fantastic. She's so unique. Watching y'all here, I kept thinking that you'd love her in "Michael". With John Travolta and William Hurt. And a fantastic soundtrack by Randy Newman. Adapted from a book by Nora Roberts. Ps. This is one of only 2 or 3 really old shows, pre 80s, that I still love to watch. More actually.
I know that you are aware that this series was a US remake of the UK series Till Death Us Do Part. Archie Bunker is an American version of Alf Garnett, and Edith is Britain's Elsie.
When Edith was going thru the "change" and her personality did a 180degree turn , it was hilarious when she verbally tore Archie a new hole ! That was the best episode of AITF.
This was my favorite show back in the day. My favorite was Edith but her and Archie together were something else. I hope you have the opportunity to watch the whole show. The lady named Louise is from a show called the Jefferson’s about Louise and George Who moved up town because they made it with their business. I think it was a spinoff of this show it’s another funny show. I loved your reactions to the Bunkers!
She didn't want to go to church, because she had a transvestite friend who was murdered for his difference. It's a series of shows. The man's female name was Beverly. He initially met Edith when Archie was driving cab, she took his cab, and collapsed. Archie gave her mouth to mouth resuscitation (she recovers and this is the hilarious part) Archie thought he was giving mouth to mouth to a woman, but of course it's a man. Edith really becomes good friends with Beverly. She was devastated when Beverly was killed, and disillusioned with church as a result. It's a really good series of shows. Edith(Jean Stapleton) was in the movie You've Got Mail with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. A take-off on the computer age, and changing families, and Hanks and Ryan have an amazing screen chemistry, Stapleton plays Meg Ryan's friend/store bookkeeper. A really good look at what an amazing role she really played as Edith, it's so entirely different, including her voice. You'll see Jean Stapleton in her real voice, and a role more real.❤
If you want to see some brilliant acting, there is a scene towards the end of the series where Edith passed away, and Archie does an entire monolog to one of her slippers. If you watch it tho, just keep some tissues handy. It will break you. 😢💔
Actually, that happened in the subsequent series, "Archie Bunker's Place" in the premiere of the second season. All in the Family's creator Norman Lear actually called her to ask if she was OK with Edith's "death." She had no problem with it, since it was only a fictional character, but Lear was quite emotional about doing it.
There are 2 you should react to. The Beverly LaSalle trilogy, very funny and heartbreaking. and the 2-part episode where Edith is attack by a rapist, again, funny, upsetting but these shows are incredible. They addressed some truly forbidden subjects at the time and really taught people through the characters we all became to love; we were so invested! TV GOLD....
My 2 favroite sitcom of all time are, WKRP in Cincinnati a ground breaking show like All in the Family. In the 70s there was a WHO concert in Cincinnati where a bunch of concert goers got killed in a rush for seats. WKRP did an episode weeks later about what happened and payed tribute. Full episodes are on TH-cam for free. The Turkey drop episode is classic tv. Or watch the short clip WKRP in Cincinnati Pink Floyd. They played modern now classic music on the show as a big part of the show. The other is TAXI. Watch any clip with Danny Devito or Christopher Lloyd.
Jean Stapleton was in the true crime drama Like Mother LIke Son with Mary Tyler More. She played a stalked and then murdered millionaire socialite. Great TV movie.
The last clip shown (Season 9 episode 25 - "Too Good Edith") would be Jean Stapleton's last appearance on the show. Over the prior 2 seasons, she'd asked to appear in only 1/2 of the episodes produced, and in those episodes where she wasn't seen, the bar/restaurant that Archie owned was featured more and more. When her contract was up and she decided not to return, the show's title was changed to ARCHIE BUNKER'S PLACE, and Edith had died off screen. We are to assume that the Phlebitis she was diagnosed with in this episode was the cause.
A great episode I forget the title, we find out about Archies childhood, it's the episode where Mike and arch get drunk after Mike mistakenly locks them in the alcohol cellar of the bar
The scene when Edith refused to go to church was bc Beverly LaSalle, the transvestite that Archie saved, was murdered. Edith could not understand why God would let that happen and refused to go to church. Ironically, Mike the atheist, helped Edith understand why bad things can sometimes happen to good people. He cheered her up.
I think you guys are missing the point of the show. It is making fun of the old "woman's place is in the home" thing that was normal in the 1950s and into the '60s. This show is poking fun at that, as well as at all kinds of prejudices. We didn't all think this way in the '70s. Also, I don't know what you mean by them making her voice that way. She did create that voice for the character but that's acting. In real life both stars were very much the opposite of these characters.
This show and then Seinfeld top 2, G O A T tv shows. "MEATHEAD"!! Rob Reiner a very accomplished director, I'm sure you've seen his work; SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE, A FEW GOOD MEN, STAND BY ME, THE PRINCESS BRIDE, etc. Peace 🕊️☮️♾️😎
The reason Edith wasn't going to go to church was that her dear friend Beverly, a transvestite, was murdered by a group who hated him for his difference. Edith felt betrayed by God, and was very angry and hurt that her friend was gone. Watch the series of shows about Beverly, how they first met, and their friendship developed. It's a powerful set of shows about differences. All in the Family has many messages, many times that informed us about racial differences, generational differences, religious, military as well. There are episodes about draft dodgers, refusing baptism, when their little grandson was Joey was born. Try those clips they are terrific ❤
Edith and Archie are a great love story of for the ages of two ordinary people trying to do their best to navigate their way through rocket speed societal change while maintaining a functioning relationship and raising an extended family. My favorite moment for the two is when Archie is suffering from hemorrhoids, Edith encourages him to eat the salad she made because he needed more ruffage in his diet. Arch replies with "ruffage, I don't need any more ruffage, what I need is some smooth-age!) I havn't been able to go to the bathroom since without having a little smile on my face while agreeing with Arch's sentiment. Who couldn't use a little more smooth-age in their life?
Jean Stapleton was a fantastic actress!

Maureen Stapleton was a very well respected Broadway actress when she got this part!!
Archie always called her a “dingbat”!
JEAN Stapleton played the role.
@@bradsullivan2495 oops, you’re right, thank you for correcting me;)
Both sisters were very well respected Broadway actresses;)
I were borned in 1956, I grew up with Archie bunker;) Archie is so fn funny;)
It was not easy to not laugh at the idiot he was;)
Jean Stapleton is one of the handful of stars I ever met in person. I was standing next to her at LAX waiting for luggage and we just said hi but that is definitely not her real voice.
You need to watch Edith talking about “cling peaches.” Absolutely hilarious. One of the greatest shows of all time!
LOVE THIS SHOW!!! Could you imagine doing that voice: ALL DAY for your JOB?? Jean Stapleton, Carroll O'Connor, Sally Struthers, AND Rob Reiner were GREAT on this show - and, the topics: SO WELL introduced!! AND: it was IMPACTFUL & HILARIOUS!! HUGS, YA'LL: ENJOY!!
Phil & Sam
There is an iconic episode of All In The Family when Archie (Carrol O'Connor) cries after Edit's death (Jean Stapleton left the show) shows that Archie really loved his wife, Edith, very emotional episode.
You are right about the morals and values even all the disputes between Archie and Meathead great reaction
I know that you are aware that this series was a US remake of the UK series Till Death Us Do Part. Archie Bunker is an American version of Alf Garnett, and Edith is Britain's Elsie.
Jean Stapleton is putting on the "Dimwitted" 1940s wife voice. Her whole persona on air for the show is an act. The same for Carrol O'Conner.
Edith's high pitched voice was part of her character.Jean Stapleton also had a good singing voice.
When Edith was going thru the "change" and her personality
did a 180degree turn , it was hilarious when she verbally
tore Archie a new hole ! That was the best episode of AITF.
Jean Stapleton was a wonderful actor. She absolutely refused to do the Edith voice after she left the show.
Archie and Fred Sanford were my role models
This was my favorite show back in the day. My favorite was Edith but her and Archie together were something else. I hope you have the opportunity to watch the whole show. The lady named Louise is from a show called the Jefferson’s about Louise and George Who moved up town because they made it with their business. I think it was a spinoff of this show it’s another funny show. I loved your reactions to the Bunkers!
Jean Stapleton developed that voice just for Edith. If you ever catch the Pilot Episode, she used her normal voice in that.
You definitley need to do reactions to scenes involving Archie with Maude and Archie with George Jefferson.
All In The Family was a morality play delivered as comedy.
She and my granny look ALOT alike. I love that show.
"Edith's Crisis of Faith" is a two-part episode of the U.S. sitcom All in the Family. It aired as the 13th and 14th episodes of season 8
Love love love ❤
I grew up with my parents watching this show. I might have to watch it again now from an adults perspective.
The episode about "The Swingers" is hilarious!.
Great reaction 🎉❤😂
a sitcom with substance very rare today
If you want to see some brilliant acting, there is a scene towards the end of the series where Edith passed away, and Archie does an entire monolog to one of her slippers. If you watch it tho, just keep some tissues handy. It will break you. 😢💔
Actually, that happened in the subsequent series, "Archie Bunker's Place" in the premiere of the second season. All in the Family's creator Norman Lear actually called her to ask if she was OK with Edith's "death." She had no problem with it, since it was only a fictional character, but Lear was quite emotional about doing it.
That episode tore me up! I make sure I tell my wife every day that I love her, whenever and wherever we are!
She was s actually a beautiful singer. She sings in the Carol Burnett show among others. 🇨🇦🖖🏻
TV GOLD....
If you saw Jean Stapleton in a movie, I doubt you would recognize her or her voice.
Tears
Great recommendations!
Jean Stapleton was in the true crime drama Like Mother LIke Son with Mary Tyler More. She played a stalked and then murdered millionaire socialite. Great TV movie.
My favorite with Edith is the “clinged peaches” episode
The last clip that you watched was the last time that we saw Edith alive. The episodes after dealt with her dying. You should do a reaction to that.
Edith and Archie was the best😂.
Can you please react to Corvyx doing the cover of Sound Of Silence.
“He sees all the things in you he could never be”
Yeah…like a future famous movie director.😉
The reason Edith wasn't going to go to church was that her dear friend Beverly, a transvestite, was murdered by a group who hated him for his difference. Edith felt betrayed by God, and was very angry and hurt that her friend was gone. Watch the series of shows about Beverly, how they first met, and their friendship developed. It's a powerful set of shows about differences. All in the Family has many messages, many times that informed us about racial differences, generational differences, religious, military as well. There are episodes about draft dodgers, refusing baptism, when their little grandson was Joey was born. Try those clips they are terrific ❤
As a 60+ yer old now, I’m always shocked that they were only in their 40’s when they did this show. As a teen, they were so old 😉
Edith and Archie are a great love story of for the ages of two ordinary people trying to do their best to navigate their way through rocket speed societal change while maintaining a functioning relationship and raising an extended family.
Edith was done in the mode of Gracie Allen. Say goo night Gracie.😅
