  • @AlBarathur

    The medieval weaponry design department is much less stupid than we think. That being said, Principe is a compromise: it increases the thrust capability trading the range of the best cut. Meaning it will perform its best cuts nearer the hilt. It is still able to cut nearer the tip obviously, but the heavy cuts have to be done nearer the hilt. Basicly Knecht has more cutting reach, while Principe has better thrusts. Its an excellent trade off if you consider armor and how armor kind of countered reach power. The longer slash range of the Knecht however would allow it to be used better on horseback.
    But that ring that the Principe does after each cut...immensely satisfying.

      They are much sharper than western swords.
      However, they are much more difficult to use, as even making the slightest mistake in how the blade is lifted can easily damage it.

    • @-Zevin-
      @-Zevin- 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @Jim Nickles I appreciate the abusive testing Skal does but Mat Easton made a good point talking about how all swords will fail, break, bend etc. You could have a $100,000 sword made for a king and it can fail, it's all about context. The type of sword, the blade profile, the steel, how it is used, and what it hits.
      It's a shame to see that Principe fail but it should tell us two things; 1. Don't hold it against the sword it what it is and there is nothing faulty in it's manufacture it failed because of it's blade profile, how it was used, and what it hit. 2. This should let many people realize that some cheaper swords that "failed" abusive testing also shouldn't always be judged so harshly, it isn't as simple as cheap sword weaker than expensive sword. I could buy a 40$ axe right now that wouldn't have failed, but it's all about context.
      There is pros and cons in all sword design. A really excellent thin slicing blade can and will break, but it will cut and slice against flesh and clothing much better than something heavier. A important fact that most people fail to realize in modern times is a sword really only had to survive a single battle or kill a single person realistically, it's usually an emergency side arm, if you need to draw it and strike at someone and defend yourself, and the sword is beat to hell and back, bent and chipped apart, but you lived, the sword did it's job.

    I don't use European blade often but i have tried the Principe. Where i practice everyone agreed it was one the most effective sword for tatami mat cutting.
    In fact they told it was so easy to get results with it, that one should train himself with something else to get the form right. Because this sword can correct your mistake on its own.
    Actually it's very similar to a Korean Samgakdo. Both swords are so effective against tatami lol.

      I have heard samgakdo is also rather fragile, and should not be used against hard targets. Principe at least seem to have extremely optimized blade geometry for soft target cutting, but the edges are wide, and thin making it slize through the mat. But thin edge profile also means its bit fragile

    • @SenTenshi

      @@lalli8152 yes it's true, a Samgakdo is a very fragile design mainly used for unarmored combat. Even tho... modern advanced steel help a lot, like... properly heat treated L6 or else.

    Wasn’t sure where to comment this but I have loved watching your channel and it just recently got me into HEMA and cutting. I previously got swords from Ronin Katana (Euro one; and really impressed with the quality) and Darksword Armory (Knight Bastard Sword; don’t even get me started on how disappointed I am with the quality and their customer service) but you have inspired me to shoot for the stars lol. I made my purchases for the Lockwood 15th Century long Sword and scabbard from Stephen Lockwood AND scooped the Albion Principe with a Christian Fletcher custom scabbard. I am beyond excited for both and during the wait am getting my cutting and long sword fenching chops up (although those swords won’t come in handy for sparing unless I want to go to jail for involuntary manslaughter lol). I just wanted to say thank you for your inspiration and passion it’s most definitely infectious and once my wallet recovers lol I am looking forward to supporting your ambitions in any way I can. THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU DO!

    The Knecht probably also cuts better the last couple of inches of the blade, thanks to the curve.

    • @LadZeroUltra
      @LadZeroUltra 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      i disagree, on other curved blades like scimitars and falchions the increased mass and wider blade at the end makes them cut better, there isnt more mass at the end of the knecht so i dont think the curve would have a meaningful effect.

    • @Sableagle
      @Sableagle 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd call for a repeat using the tips to cut, but given that note about the fragility of the Principe blade, maybe that won't happen.

    • @mitchellmendoza6765
      @mitchellmendoza6765 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sizeable_ Lad mass helps with hacking cuts, but mass is generally less necessary for other effective types of cut when talking about sword tips.

    • @sarojolibois6088
      @sarojolibois6088 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You actually need a very strong curve to make a sensible difference in cutting.
      Curved blades would often be curved just because of quirks during fabrication process, differences in hardness and thickness causing a curvature during hardening/quenching, etc...
      There isn't much advantage of a curved blade to a straight blade, it might open some different technics I guess (not an expert in hema so I might be wrong), and the curvature helps with edge alignement. Like, when you swing it, the curve of the blade naturally tends to guide the blade in a proper alignement.
      As said in previous comments some curved swords were better cutters not because of the curve, but because of differences in weight, and balance.

  • @raziyatheseeker

    I feel a kreigsmesser like the Knecht is more utilitarian, made to be comfy to hold and durable, maybe even abit simpler to assemble? And I say "durable", especially due to that foreboding message about the Principe (._.). That said, both are top-notch, Albion-made swords, even if the longsword-style Principe is more forgiving for cuts. If they ever had to be used in a real fight, the differences in how fiercely they slice someone open would be negligible. Still, the comparisons are fun to witness.

    • @raziyatheseeker
      @raziyatheseeker 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @incinerator950 Ah, I wouldn't know about XVIIIc swords. Still, I could totally see specific swords being made as display pieces, functional or not. Parade armor and weapons are more intricate than necessary, and suits of armor made for display are heavier than those made for battle. IIRC, there are some absurdly large Japanese swords that were made to test and show off the swordsmith's skill, even if impractically long.
