Wow I saw 3 plays where you see this mans IQ 1) When he was out on a pick and roll and Luka tried to slip the pass and he chased the passed and stole it with his left knowing he would reach the ball better that way 1:24 2) When he stole the ball and passed to Beasly behind the back 1:54 3) When he went to chase a shooter of the 3 point line and spun in order to recover 2:12 This guy is perfection in terms of what the Lakers needed. A long wing who can defend multiple positions but not only that, the rebounding and steals and activity of this guys is infectious and amazing If you know basketball and you pride yourself on defense YOU KNOW! He's a One Man FullPress Defence all by himself that has the abilities to play head up Man to Man on even the Elite type scorers in NBA like Luka and that's not a easy job never seen him totally out of sync the way Vanderbilt had him flabbergasted. It's great to see defence played in NBA cause in true reality Man to Man defence was what epitomized NBA basketball players historically before advent of Zones to stop Shaq and to hide deficiencies in the lack of being able to play head up defence from Superstars to the 12th Man on bench. So it's a delight to see that aspect of the game being played by Jarred Vanderbilt.. looked like Rodman out the at one point .,.
Vanderbilt is like another Dennis Rodman. Rodman was better but they are very similar. In 1989 Rodman off the bench avg 9.4 rebounds, 0.9 blks, 9 points in 27 minutes. Vanderbilt with Minnesota last season averaged 8.4 rebounds, 0.6 blks, 1.3 steals, 7 points in 25.4 minutes. Both were great at position defense and not so much blocking shots and had/have great hustle and run the floor well. Rodman got better than that and Vanderbilt has the potential to get even better.
Vando Definitely outplayed Luka this game, every turnover or missed shot Luka was crying for a call, Jason Kidd even called him out during the interview to “mature”
The MVP of this game was Vanderbilt. Yes, Lebron and AD came up clutch, but without the defense and effort of Vanderbilt, they wouldn't have come back. The Mavs aren't making it out of the West because their defense, especially in the interior sucks.
The refreshing thing about him can be shown with an example. At 3:39, Vanderbilt is playing between kyrie and luka, Westbrook would over play either one of them and it would leave a wide open dunk to #0; on the flip side, Vanderbilt was able to fall back, read whom picked up who, and stop the back door cut from #0.
