  • Our Slovenian road trip heads into the world-famous, Triglav National Park, for some stunning scenery, ravishing rivers and another incredible drive over an iconic mountain pass.
** This video was recorded in early October, before Slovenia's rise in Covid-19 cases, curfew and lockdown **
After leaving the beautiful Lake Bled, we park up, ready for a trek, down the famous and fabulous Vintgar Gorge. Carved by Radovna River, Vintgar Gorge is located near Gorje, approximately 4 kilometres from Bled. The 1.6-kilometre long gorge is carved amidst the glorious vertical walls of Hom and Boršt hills, and it is highlighted by the Radovna River and its waterfalls, pools and rapids. Join us as we trek along the trail, which runs across the gorge across relatively sturdy wooden bridges as well as Žumer galleries, which ends with the mighty 13 metres high Šum river waterfall - what an experience!
After an overnight at the Nordic Center Plasnica (a legendary ski 'flying' centre - more about this in the vid!) we hit the road and up onto the incredible Vršič pass. Draped across the Julian Alps in northwestern Slovenia, the Vršič pass is actually the highest pass in Slovenia, as well as the highest in the Eastern Julian Alps. This amazing road rises from Kranjska Gora in a series of 50 hairpin bends, traverses the top, and then descends into the Soča Valley. Largely built in late 1915 to supply the Austro-Hungarian war effort in World War I, it was originally named after Archduke Eugen of Austria-Hungary. Its current local name of "The Russian Road" (Ruska Cesta), refers to the approximately ten thousand Russian prisoners of war used as labourers in the 1915 construction - more on that in the vid too!
Finally we end up on the banks of the the River Soča, which has a distinct emerald green colour and is considered to be one of the most beautiful rivers in Europe. We're here to visit the Grand Canyon. No, not that one... the Grand Canyon of Soča! The Soča Gorge is a 750-metre-long meticulously smoothed out gorge that is only a few metres wide and 15 metres deep. It's an ideal spot for adventure kayakers or canyoning as the river tosses and turns its way down the valley. Overhanging walls capture several-metre-high water curtains and beams of sunlight, which is drowned in the clear depths of the emerald green beauty of the River Soča - it's one of the most famous sights in Slovenia, and you can see why! Wow!

    Krasna si, bistra hči planin,
    Brdka v prirodni si lepoti,
    ko ti prozornih globočin
nevihte temne srd ne moti -
    krasna si, hči planin!
Tvoj tek je živ in je legak
    ko hod deklet s planine;
in jasna si ko gorski zrak
in glasna si, kot spev krepak
    planinske je mladine -
    krasna si, hči planin!
Rad gledam ti v valove bodre,
    valove te zelenomodre:
    temna zelen planinskih trav
    in vedra višnjevost višav
    lepo se v njih je zlila;
    na rosah sinjega neba,
    na rosah zelenih gora
    lepoto to si pila -
    krasna si, hči planin!
    Ti meni si predraga znanka!
    Ko z gorskih prišumiš dobrav,
od doma se mi zdiš poslanka,
nesoča mnog mi ljub pozdrav -
Bog sprimi te tu sred planjav!...
    Kako glasno, ljubo šumljaš,
    kako čvrsto, krepko skakljaš,
ko sred gora še pot imaš!
    A ko pridereš na ravnine,
    zakaj te živa radost mine?
    Kaj trudno lezeš in počasi,
    zakaj so tožni tvoji glasi?
    Težko se ločiš od hribov,
    zibelke tvojega valovja?
Mar veš, da tečeš tik grobov,
    grobov slovenskega domovja?
    Obojno bol pač tu trpiš,
V tej boli tožna in počasna,
    ogromna solza se mi zdiš,
a še kot solza - krasna!
    Krasna si, bistra hči planin,
    Brdka v prirodni si lepoti,
    ko ti prozornih globočin
    nevihte divje srd ne moti!
    Pa oh, siroti tebi žuga
    vihar grozán, vihar strašán;
    prihrumel z gorkega bo juga,
    divjal čez plodno bo ravan,
ki tvoja jo napaja struga -
gorjé, da daleč ni ta dan!
    Nad tabo jasen bo obok,
    krog tebe pa svinčena toča
in dež krvav in solz potok
in blisk in grom - oh, bitva vroča!
    Tod sekla bridka bodo jekla,
in ti mi boš krvava tekla:
    kri naša te pojila bo,
    sovražna te kalila bo!
    Takrat se spomni, bistra Soča,
    kar gorko ti srce naroča:
    Kar bode shranjenih voda
    v oblakih tvojega neba,
kar vode v tvojih bo planinah,
kar bode v cvetnih je ravninah,
    tačas pridrvi vse na dan,
    narasti, vzkipi v tok strašán!
Ne stiskaj v meje se bregov,
    srdita čez branove stopi,
    ter tujce, zemlje lačne, vtopi
    Na dno razpenjenih valov!

Nice and with a lot of good looking views. You should prolong with journey to the Bovec and fortress Kluze. It is fantastic with canyon and ferrata 90 deegrees to the top of hill. With cavern made by soldiers in WW1. Now is light inside. Avout 1 hour walking (climbing) you could see fortres peak 1313. 1313 means sea level. If you drive to the top on Predilpass, you drive to Italy. Nature on this way is really fantastic. As I see waterfall Boka you surely follow river Soca to south. After Kobarid Soca has emerald colour. Before Tolmin is place on Soce, where they have took one scene for film Narnia. Near Tolmin you have to to visit Tolminska korita. It is even more wonderful than Blejski vintgar. And Devils bridge is even bettter than those on river Soca.

Wow we did the Vintgar Gorge a couple of years ago in early summer, warned about the crowds we went super early. Beautiful place to visit but there was considerably less water! Another great video. Keep them coming.

The soča trout was (and I think it still is) protected as another species of trout was introduced to the river. So you can catch it but must release it. But you can keep and eat the invasive species. Not shure if it still is howevwer.

Let mi give you some advise. I Slovenian grammar, every letter "c", read as "tz"! So, Planica read as Planitza, not as Planika!
