- Jay Siemens targets jumbo black crappie through the ice with the aid of live imaging. Jay and friend, Josh McFadden, ice skate and e-bike across the lake to their spots, then show off the advantages and excitement of fishing with this highly discussed technology. The angling duo eventually catch enough crappie to drop in the oil and cook a delicious panfish recipe with a coconut twist.

Meat Eater, keep these Siemens videos coming !!!
Jay always has someone interesting to do the videos with 😁
It’s so crazy I’ve been watching jay for like 10 years and now he’s on meateater. He’s perfect because he explains himself well and also catches huge fish
E bike and live scope, two extremely polarizing topics in one video. 😮
Why the controversy on the e-bike?
I know you've touched on this subject before but I don't think it's said enough but conservation and selective harvest is so important. I'm also glad you talked a little bit about the sound sonars make. I know many years ago I used to set my old flasher on top of the ice to try and minimize the ping the trade was less clarity but I didn't spoke as much fish. This only works on first ice.
Apparently jay needs to watch Aaron's video on releasing crappie from deep water
I was thinking the same thing!!
I mean he’s releasing them rather quick, Aaron said releasing quickly and not holding them for a long long time gives them the strength to get back down. But yes I agree deep water crappie care is extremely important
They kept all the deep water crappies though? You can see them closing the mouth on the ones they released earlier in the video too.
clicking on this video and realizing it’s a Jay Siemens and meat eater was its own Christmas gift
imagine having the bad luck to post this right before the uncut angling video on the same topic. people curious about barotrauma should take a look!
I highly doubt it was a coincidence. Aaron is a free thinker and likes to challenge misinformation.
That’s a recipe I’m definitely gonna cook for my fishing buddies this winter, thanks boys!!!
I love watching your videos Jay. Your commitment to conservation and education on fisheries is top notch. Everyone thinks ice fishermen are the bonk brigade where I come from. You are an awesome ambassador for the sport of fishing. Thank you for what you do.
🎉 very impressive with the cooking. Especially when it comes to cooking rice on the stove
Just need to get Aaron Wiebe on meat eater. Siemens, Wiebe, and Clayton…. Would be the best ice fishing trio and a true homage to the OG Canadian ice TH-camrs. Justin Jenkins assorted meats would be awesome too but dunno ppl can handle all that greatness.
that crappie being up north getting that big was probably 20 years old, good on ya releasing it
How Josh doesn’t have his own show by now and/or work for meateater is beyond me
Go watch Uncut Angling's new video on Barrow Trauma! 1) be quick about the release 2) get the air out their mouth 3) close the mouth 4) turn the fish around 5) monitor with a livescope. If they start floating back up, start keeping them. If they go down and stay down, you're ok to keep releasing!
My favorite fish to eat down here in Virginia. I like this before I have even watched.
Now I’ve watched the episode. Yes, crappie fishing does bring people together. Fun to catch and , in my opinion, more fun to eat! Good stuff. The recipe looked incredible.
Josh needs to write a cookbook or at least post that recipe
Always good!!
Jay and Josh on ice is nice! Always educational!
I’d love to be ice fishing right now but MN just has bad ice right now plus tons of rain
Me as well. Southern Iowa has no ice.
Drove on the ice today in 🇨🇦 😎
I knew a guy in Montana that would drive his truck on the ice instead of walk. He lost 3 before the insurance told him they wouldn't cover that anymore.
This looks delicious!! Wow! Catch and cook version coming soon??
Wow huge !
Happy New Year 🎉
JO JO IN VT 💞
Props to the camera person!
I'm from Iowa and most of the lakes are fished quit a bit. I believe the live scope will deplete lakes that get fished a lot. Where you guys live there's a lot of lakes to fish from with less population, so live scope won't make a big I
Pact as it does where live. I don't own a live scope and don't intend to spend that much money. To each his own I guess. You have to admit that this new technology will benefit the angle no matter which species they are fishing for.
Jay I love ya but it’s not you don’t say Crappies like CRAP-PEEs, ya say it like CROP-PEES🤣🤣 ❤
Apparently you haven't watched Uncut Angling's video about barotrauma? Surprised as I thought you guys were friends?
Mani like keeping the bigger crappie more meat !!!
More Josh! That was some epic looking fish at the end.
White fish! Tulibee! Walleye! "No sir, I am the dreaded snot weasel. And I will proudly eat and destroy anything that you stick in front of me. If you release me, I'll come back in 8 minutes and bite you again."
Good afternoon from Syracuse NY USA everyone and a Happy New Year everyone
Does Josh have a cookbook out?!
With Smallmouth, you can fizz it to help the swim bladder normalize after it expands when coming up from deep deep water….can that be done with Crappie, as a way to conserve the ones released better?
Watch Uncut Angling’s latest video. Aaron imparts some really good knowledge into this topic.
Coconut curry crappie 🤤 damn some huge slabs
Where can I find this recipe? I’d like to try and make it.
Go to the “keeper “ spot and catch tiny ones. lol.. food looks good
The fellet job? Happy to here Jay call himself out on that. Lots of dinks, thats ok. You're eatin!
Some for the pan when needed, and if you get some big ones they go back. Absolutely right, an my go to in Germany 👍
Amazing Fishing & Food = Great Trip!
Uncut angling has some interesting videos about the baro trama lately. Whats up Jay?
Man watching him skate that far out on the ice gives me butterflies I could never
Awesome work Jay and Josh!
The batter recipe sounds off - Corn starch and baking *soda* won't go well. Shouldn't it be baking *powder*?
Watch uncut angling video on Deepwater crappie release.
Uncut angling debunked baro trauma and he did it with crappie
I think I might have enjoyed the cooking more than the fishing. I love making good food. FYI smoked walleye is amazing. I know walleye wasn’t in the video but just saying. Thank you for sharing your videos. People like me enjoy them.
Coconut curry crappie??!! Im intrigued.
I watched the video back a few times but never did catch who makes that soft plastic you were running for those crappie. Any chance I can talk you into sharing? 😊
Are you double dipping vids!!??🤣🤣🤣🤣🤪
I literally just finished supper and sat down to watch this video. After seeing the Thai Crappie I am so hungry again! 😂
Wow…this was cool. And the meal looked yum! Thanks for teaching us about the sonar, selection and taking us on your fishing trip. 😎
You know as much as the fishing commuty is absolutely friendly and helpful, drilling through thick ice with a hand held arm powered auger is still a tough go
Fishing is pretty boring too watch and I love fishing but Jay makes this work.
That crappie recipe looked so good! That would make me want to eat crappie, which I normally don't like!
i live on a small private lake and we definitely put a hurting on the crappies winter and spring, now its super hard to catch one we shouldve released the big ones.
Using that camera is like a video game . Seems pretty awesome . Ps … good job chef
What kind of bait are you using?
How to cook fish if you dont like fish.😂 nice work on catching though!
Does the avermedia hook up to a 93svuhd? Thanks
Love a good fish curry
Petri from Germany 😊
Josh should have a cooking show for meat eater
That is bad ass skating on the ice getting and going....
livescope is lame.
Jay loves sieman
Jay is awesome
Yay fishing!
Nice of Peric to lend you his skates!
Canadian proud, well done guys
Great stuff gentlemen!
16" crappie??!! WOW!
Looks delicious
you have come so far, these are gems!
You touched on their age, but other than getting slightly bigger is there an advantage for the older ones to live? Say with Red Snapper, the slightly older ones will release many more eggs than younger breeders. Otherwise, I’m taking the whitetail approach! Eat the older ones and let the 9”ers live 😊
Also, that fish had more yellow than I’ve ever seen on a crappie.
Crappies yes. The older bigger the fish the more eggs she has. Unlike say walleye where ur better breeders are probably 18-24 inch females those huge females have "worse" eggs but I still let those go I can't kill a big one to much respect
It’s also extremely important to release the big mamas because any offspring she produces has the genetic capability to become a large one like her. Strength against any disease or virus that may be in the water because there is a reason she was able to get that large and you want those genes to get passed on. This applies with any species out there
The cooking part was really unique recipe
It’s common in the islands
Nice !
Yep, get’em!!!
Awesome vid, no more Ion auger?
Yeah he’s still using ion. He’s just using the Pistol bit right now because he’s traveling light and on foot.

To preserve the natural resources, fishermen must learn selective harvest. I would argue that crappies 9-11 inches should be harvested. 12 inches and above should be released!!
They were keeping 7-8”s tho haha
listening to biologists on crappie often. young crappie are the real breeders so size doesn't matter except for trophy fish. the large ones have already passed their genes many times over. crappie need to be kept to keep lakes healthy, they are eating machines and can easily take over lakes and stunt other fish by competing for forage.
recommend Aquatic Biologist on youtube, dude has 30+yrs experience in lake and pond management.
Umm no thanks I will stick to deep fried.
I’m all for letting the big ones go but you’re idea of keepers are baby’s ha I guess I have standards anything under 10” goes back and over 12.5” goes back
Sac-au -lait
I would challenge your theory on throwing the big ones back. Then keeping the big ones for the pan??? This is the complete opposite of harvesting big bucks letting them grow until they're old. You are putting fish back in the water that have already, grown old. Eat the big ones and let the little ones grow????
This is probably the absolute worst crappie recipe I've ever seen.
🇧🇷👍
You should be teaching proper fish handling skills in deep water applications. Pseudoscience is taking over social media - and putting us all at risk. Krusty old guys and anti fishermen united😢
Very distracting that Jay (with his experience) can’t pronounce crappie correctly :(
He’s Australian😕
My God, you talk a lot. 😩
If you dont like you should just skip the video! No one force you to watch it!
It's almost like he's the host or something? Weird.
