University of California divests from Israel and ends study abroad programs

  • Students at the University of California (UC) announced UC's divestment from Israel and the cessation of study abroad programs. This decision followed a pledge signed by over 5,000 UC alumni, withholding donations until UC divests from companies with military and business ties to Israel.
Alumni published an open letter in January urging an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza and calling for divestment from Israel, particularly in military investments. This letter was directed at the regents chair and UC president. Organisers of the pledge report that the number of signatures has quadrupled since 22 April, coinciding with the start of encampments at UC Berkeley.
On 26 April, the University of California announced it would not divest from Israel. The office of the president issued the following statement:
"The University of California has consistently opposed calls for boycott against and divestment from Israel. While the University affirms the right of our community members to express diverse viewpoints, a boycott of this sort impinges on the academic freedom of our students and faculty and the unfettered exchange of ideas on our campuses."

Meaning, for it to be binding, the other UC branches would have to go along in unanimity, or a simple majority suffice, or will the UC chancellor/president/rector have the final word based upon the board of directors diktat?

It is just local to riverside. And it is only a transparency clause in order to see donations and investments of Riverside specifically. Los Angeles Berkeley and all of UC investments are under the authority of the regents of the university of California.

@@hectorhuerta3331 I think the more important thing to look at, and the bigger reason that this is a win is because it shows a precedent that there are some schools that are willing to do the right thing, thus alienating and pointing out the lack of care or compassion mixed with exposing the rampant geopolitical ignorance and delusion of the schools that don’t(a protest that ended with the result the pro Palestinian protesters intended while being orderly and having no “violence” or “riots” to be seen)

I'm not sure how much of relationship they have with apartheid state, but I definitely know how deep Harvard and especially MIT is invested in selling their technology including military contracts, and those in charge are not as humane and sympathetic as the gentleman in the video. It's just too much money that they'll not let go of it without a battle.

On their behalf (I went to University of California at Santa Barbara 25 years ago), they thank you, but they were doin it for Palestine.
Now that we've finished the courtesy, I would like to inform you that I think this news involves only UC Riverside, which has about 35,000 students, many of whom are from immigrant families or are the first in their family to attend college, because it is a less prestigious campus thanothers.
I don't think this affects the entire University of California system, which includes at least 14 cities with UC Campuses, such as the largest one, which is UCLA in Los Angeles, with about 60,000 students, and the oldest location, with 40,000 students, UC Berkley, which is also known as California University. So be careful to remember that UC is not the same as CU, which is not ussd because it would be confused with the 60 city CSU California State Universities system where most of the California students attend. The UC systems is reserved for the top 15% of high school graduates.

      This history?
The British Peel Commission recommended a partition of Palestine in 1937 based upon the population transfer of Arabs out of the Jewish State. The Jewish Agency, which was the de-facto Jewish government within the Mandate, rejected the principle.
The "International Post-War Settlement" document issued by the British Labour Party in 1944, stated that the party’s official position was: “…in Palestine surely is a case, on human grounds and to promote a stable settlement, for transfer of population. Let the Arabs be encouraged to move out as the Jews move in. Let them be compensated handsomely for their land and let their settlement elsewhere be carefully organised and generously financed.” The Jewish Agency rejected this idea as well.
The Jewish Agency accepted the terms of the November 1947 UN Partition Plan, which required both the Jewish and Arab States to grant the Arabs in the Jewish State and the Jews in the Arab State full democratic citizenship, as well as the option of remaining in their homes in one State while being citizens of the other. The Arabs rejected this principle. The Jews living in areas designated as part of the Arab State, as well as those in areas designated as part of the Jewish State, came under attack even before the end of 1947.
Shortly after the passage of UN resolution 181 the Arab League had recruited thousands of volunteer soldiers who came from as far away as Serbia, under the banner of the Arab Liberation Army, to infiltrate Palestine and resist the implementation of the UN resolution. In April 1948 the Jewish Agency and the Hagana, the precursor to the IDF, had a very clear mission. They had to ensure a secure and viable Jewish State, and to defend the lives of the Jews within Palestine, as the British forces withdrew. The mission of the ALA, together with the Holy War Army of the Arab Higher Committee, and to some degree the British led Jordanian Arab Legion, was to prevent that from happening. Battles ensued in most Arab villages and neighborhoods between the Hagana and local “defenders”.
The policy was clear. Arab villages and neighborhoods within the Jewish State that demonstrated the willingness to remain within the Jewish State were not to be disturbed. Arab villages and neighborhoods hostile to being included in the Jewish State, would not be included in the Jewish State, but would be escorted to the border of what was supposed to be the Arab State of Palestine. Thanks primarily to the meddling of the Arab League and their ALA, most Arab villages and neighborhoods fell in the latter category.
Israel did not expel the Arabs, it facilitated the voluntary transfer of the Arab population that clearly did not desire to reside within the Jewish State. The Arabs who remained are those who were resigned to the prospect of becoming citizens of the Jewish State. That option was not granted to Jews within the parts of Palestine that fell beyond the 1949 armistice demarcation lines. No Jews remained within the areas of Palestine occupied by Jordan or Egypt. In fact, within a few years of Israel’s creation, no Jews remained in the bulk of the Arab world. There has been a complete ethnic cleansing of Jews from the Arab world which the international community prefers to ignore, while having no problem whatsoever pointing an accusatory finger at Israel for not preventing the flight of the Arab population that rejected being included in the UN mandated Jewish State.

it is the wrong move , people who have never been to Israel or west bank - are protesting it - increasing the division and hate , they should increase study abroad programs for better understanding of the people who live there , there perspectives , and talk to local people and get better ideas of how to achieve peace , and maybe appreciate a bit more how well life is here in America.

Bravo to USC. One thing, though, I think study abroad programs SHOULD continue regarding Israel -- these programs should contain two parts: study in Israel AND study in a Palestinian institution in the West Bank. Life is complex and so are people. By studying in Israel (I'm excluding the West Bank here) -- you will meet Israelis with diverse views and this experience should be combined with studying in a Palestinian institution. If someone opts to go to Hebrew University they should required to study at a Palestinian institution as well. (East Jerusalem should become a shared city by both Palestine and Israel). It's an incredibly eye-openning, thought-provoking experience to encounter Israelis who are right wing or settler and then get to meet on the opposite spectrum Israelis who are pro-Palestinian state and equal rights AND Palestinians and further, Palestinians who are on the right, center, and left in politics.
This is how I learned about the Palestinian-Israeli crises and their cultures. Coming from the US, I did not have the skillset to understand the complexities of the conflicts or what was Palestinian culture like, and through the program I participated on -- I got to meet Palestinians and learn all the horrible experiences and realities of their situation that have long been censored out of US msm media. I also learned who were Israeli settlers and just how fascist their movement truly is. It's hard to learn about the realities if you don't experience it firsthand and get to meet people and live in their culture. The good, the bad, the truly ugly. From there -- we can learn and try to remedy problems with informed and functional mindsets and understanding. THe fight is not over -- the Palestinians need a bona fide and real state, and both states need to live in peace.

FYI, we need our elected officials to enforce no money transfers or donations to Israeli settlements in the Occupied Territories -- West Bank, East Jerusalem, and also Gaza if settlements return to there. It's illegal to do so per US law, but rarely enforced.

What on earth is wrong with a study abroad program? Are they afraid that people will find out what a wonderful place Israel is and what wonderful, warm, tolerant people MOST Israelis are and how happy and supported the Arab Muslims who live in Israel are?

    • @aamnahere6250
      @aamnahere6250 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

This is not a question asked in good faith. You really don't want the answer to your question. 40,000 Gazan civilians (mostly women and children) have been annihilated by Israel and you want to talk about how kind, tolerant and warm Israelis are? They've destroyed thousands of mosques, churches, schools, hospitals, bakeries and homes. Your 'kind, tolerant and warm' Israelis are responsible for multiple mass graves that have been discovered in Gaza recently. They destroyed entire hospitals to ensure nobody could be treated there. IDF soldiers have executed doctors and medical personnel. There is no small number of Israelis preventing aid from entering Gaza as well as committing crimes. Those videos have been proudly shared by your 'warm, tolerant and kind' Israelis on telegram. There are hundreds of Israeli politicians and journalists calling for Gaza to be obliterated.
Israel literally announced that it would bomb and starve innocents to punish them and you have the audacity to call them kind, tolerant and warm.
Of course, you find them kind, tolerant and warm. You're also a white supremacist nation founded on a genocide that kept denying it for centuries. The existence of some Arabs in Israel doesn't prove anything. There are laws that actively discriminate against them. The whole Israeli bureaucracy and society discriminates against them. Not to mention, Israel has the nation state law which means it openly claims to be the state of only Jews. The justice minister at the time that law was enacted said that Jews have more rights than non Jews in Israel. You don't care about any of this because you're a defender of an apartheid state because that aligns with your racist ideology. The existence of black people in the US during slavery and Jim Crow didn't prove that the US was a beacon of antiracism.

It is telling that Zahir Muhse’in, member of the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) Executive Committee, said the following in a 1977 interview with the Amsterdam-based newspaper Trouw. “The Palestinian people does not exist. The creation of a Palestinian state is only a means for continuing our struggle against the state of Israel for our Arab unity. In reality today there is no difference between Jordanians, Palestinians, Syrians, and Lebanese. Only for political and tactical reasons do we speak today about the existence of a Palestinian people, since Arab national interests demand that we posit the existence of a distinct ‘Palestinian people’ to oppose Zionism.”
