The Americans honored the agreement for a couple of years, and then under Bill Clinton’s presidency the US reneged on the agreement. But there were other events in 2008, 2014 and 2021 which eventually provoked Russia to invade Ukraine in 2022. From 2015, NATO started to arm and train Ukraine, and in 2022 prior to the conflict, Ukraine had the second largest army in NATO. The history of NATO expansion is quite involved, and I think could be described as “a real can of worms”. TH-cam is a great source of information should you wish to do some research yourself. There won't be any diplomatic settlements. There were 2 peace agreements made and broken to buy time for Ukraine to build up it's military. Negotiations happened in the first year of the invasion and after being pretty close to an agreement one side pulled out, I have yet to see that claim disputed. At this point, if the war is halted both sides will just build up their military and it will start again in 2 years. Russia isn't going to stop until every man in Ukraine willing to hold a gun can't hold a gun.

There won't be any diplomatic settlements. There were 2 peace agreements made and broken to buy time for Ukraine to build up it's military. Negotiations happened in the first year of the invasion and after being pretty close to an agreement one side pulled out, I have yet to see that claim disputed. At this point, if the war is halted both sides will just build up their military and it will start again in 2 years. Russia isn't going to stop until every man in Ukraine willing to hold a gun can't hold a gun.

Long range missiles will have no effect. First because Russia is now regularly shooting down Storm Shadow missilesor diverting them by electronic means, but also because they need NATO satellites for targeting and guidance and NATO technicians for inputting the data. This makes such attacks by NAO not Ukraine and Putin has threatened reprisals against those countries involved with his nuclear submarines now off the coast of the UK and last week the launch of a satellite killer system to take out the NATO satellites used for such strikes.
We should never forget that Mearsheimer famously "predicted" the war in the Ukraine, not _only_ because it was clear how the "encirled" REact (Russia), but also because it is clear how the "encirclers" (the "buck passers" USA/EU/NATO) PROact in strategy.

It has always been a war of attrition from the Russian perspective and Ukraine is not surviving they are being demilitarizated, aka war of attrition. It has taken 2.5yrs to realize that Russia is not fighting a war of territorial conquest but one of attrition. Once the combat potential of Ukraine has been sufficiently neutralized, Russia will annex more of Ukraine territory to guarantee its security.
