Getting our bees to produce a surplus of honey, in order for them to make honey for me, is one of my priorities. To help make that a reality, I do help out a little bit, I give them an abundance of wax to help make the work a lot easier for them thus ensuring a honey crop for me.
On this video, I once again show the method I use to apply wax to plastic foundation. I do realize my method is a bit extreme for most beekeepers, but there are other methods that can be used to accomplish the same end result, and I do mention that in the video, and give the link to the video I made on that subject at the end of this description.
I also did say I'd include a few other links as well, here they are:

I know the video started out very differently than most of mine do, but because I have a deep affection for Purple Martins as well as bees, I wanted to get them in the video as well. And if you are wondering how I got such a large slab of beeswax, this was beeswax that had solidified in my kettle after I had dipped 400 foundations, and I pulled it out in one big chunk. Amazing! God's peace to all. Mr. Ed

I wouldn’t mind a video on what you call the more “non glamorous” bee work. I think it would be interesting and different. I like that you give the bees that heavy coat of wax. They made it in the first place and it’s good they get it back, especially when it means more energy and time for honey! God bless. Stay safe and well.

My local suppliers don't dip the foundation, they paint it with a roller. It puts all the wax on the tops of the ridges where the bees will be building out their comb, and gives a really good start, without filling up the bottoms of the cells with wax that is just going to waste there.

Jeff, as a novice 3 yrs ago starting out...AND STILL a novice😅....I assembled my own frames as part of my learning curves...I still do....realizing the potential future problems with bar separations, so I used the small brad type flat head nails 2 down thru top bars at ea end, same up thru bottom bar into side bars and 1 nail thru side bars into top bar/bottom bar offset from ea other. I also glued the joints prior to nailing with Food Grade wood glue. My frames are solid, dont come apart and have weathered well. I am however just a hobby pudknocker compared to your operation!😂😂

This does not apply to Jeff's operation but it might to others. I do use excluders. At the end of flow. I clean my excluders with a heat gun. What comes off my excluders is a mixture of propolis and bees wax. That mixture is what I use to coat my plastic frames. My bees seem to prefer that over pure clean beeswax. I do not use plastic as a rule but I do have several. I have no problem using plastic other than it does make the supers a little heavier to handle.

One of my additional hobbies to beekeeping is 3D printing and I have designed and printed many gadgets that I use for 3D printing I have also designed and built one of my own 3D printers, but I just got to thinking that it would be possible to design an extruding hot-end and wax hopper to print completed combs onto the foundations, but first I will print a PLA comb which is a bioplastic made from corn starch and see if my bees will take to it, I will, of course, let you know how I get on with these endeavours as if we can help the bees by providing them with fully drawn out comb they can get on with the business of filling it.

Another super informative video. From knowing hardly anything about bees, your videos have given me a real interest in the subject. Is it true that a worker bee only makes half a teaspoon of honey in its lifetime? I only have a few wild bees in my garden in summer and a couple of small wall housings for quite a few solitary bees. Tku for sharing.

    • @JeffHorchoff

Other than "cost" of excess wax, any thought to dip the whole frame into the wax instead of dealing with popping in/out the foundation into the frames. It would save a ton of time and simply the process. Frames could go straight in/out of the boxes.

A close one for sure. Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my over 450 bee wrangling/ bee rescue adventure videos and let me know what you think of them. By the way, I post a new video almost every Friday morning, and I look forward to hearing from you again soon. God's peace J P.
