    OKAY - AN UPDATE
    1. I through away alllllllll of the lip glosses with the charms because MEGA GROSS YA'LL. Thank you to everyone who helped educate with love in the comment section!
    2. Disinfecting, Sanitizing, and Sterilizing are all different things and I'm a big bozo for using those words interchangeably. I did not STERILIZE those lip gloss tubes, I do not have the fancy equipment for such a process. Thank you again to all the cool chem students and lab workers who helped a gal out in the comments.
    3. Any comments discussing other small businesses in a derogatory way with immediately be deleted. Royalty Soaps has NEVER advocated for exposing, bullying, or harrasing others online. The red flags listed here are not to target any one specific person or group, but are the effect of me simply reading the FDA's website (ie. list your ingredients, manufacture in a clean environment). Another regulation not mentioned in the video is listing the full address of the manufacturing location on your packaging. This part of the video was simply to equip the consumer with a quick bullet list before they put things on their mouth. lol
    4. Still no plans to sell lip gloss at this point. 😂

    I don’t normally comment “corrections” on videos, but I just wanted to let everyone know that 70% isopropyl alcohol is a lot better at sterilizing than 90%. The sterilization process from alcohol comes from the evaporating alcohol. The 90% evaporates too fast to have much of a benefit. This isn’t widely known. I feel like Katie would love to have this information because she wants what’s best for everyone.

    • @Nirrrina
      @Nirrrina ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I remember that now. When the pandemic first happened all I could get was 91% alcohol & I had to add water to it to use as hand sanitizer.
      Now I just buy the 70% because it's just easier.

  • @alicor3291
    @alicor3291 ปีที่แล้ว +157

    I am a makeup artist and a paramedic - just so you're aware, 70% alcohol is the cosmetic grade you need to adequately sanitize. Anything higher evaporates too quickly, so it doesn't have the time to penetrate the cell and kill whatever it may be. Just thought you may want to know for future. :)

    Hi Katie! I have some experience with the Lorann oils, though not in lip gloss. I've used them in hard candy making which I believe is the intended purpose, especially the ones that come in the tiny glass bottles. They are really concentrated flavors which is great for candy making but maybe not lip gloss. I can see why people would try them in a lip product but I would worry about them being too concentrated and perhaps irritating for some people. I'm sure many people assume that since they're sold in the baking aisle of craft stores and can be eaten that it would be fine to apply to lips but I would be wary.

    • @jemzeldab7086
      @jemzeldab7086 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      For sure! Lorann oils are 100% food safe, but not all of them are body safe! I mainly use them for making hard candy as well, but I have used them in bath bombs for friends and although there are some that are safe, do your research on EVERY FLAVOR. For example, Almond is a no, root beer is a no, and cinnamon is an ABSOLUTE no.

    So excited to watch this video!
    I really appreciate the intro and disclaimer/warnings! It definitely made me think of some red flags I didn’t notice with small creators of cosmetics!
    I like that you’ve sterilised the tubes, I’ve heard some creators say they can’t sterilise their tubes because it “contaminates them”.

    • @Elizabeth-iv2pr
      @Elizabeth-iv2pr ปีที่แล้ว +27

      They may still be truthful though depending on what the manufacturer does, autoclaved vessels in sealed bags would be the most sterile. Straight lip balm tubes could probably be sterilized using UV light by a larger business.
      Air drying at room temperature could actually introduce bacterial growth. But if the small businesses don't know for sure then this method is better than nothing.
      I'm researching at the moment, so I'm just approaching it from a lab standpoint where a single bacterium could mess up your results and a lot of our plastic consumables are pre-sterilized or autoclaved (extreme steam cleaning in a high pressure environment which means they are dry afterwards). Would a run of the mill container manufacturer do this tho...

    Great experiment! I wouldn't recommend using the polymer clay charms. I have alot of experience using clay and it can corrode different plastics. I once had some canes in an old ice cream plastic tub and 2 weeks later the polymer clay had 'melted' a hole through it. It was Fimo soft polymer clay. As cute as they looked, I wouldn't buy a lip product with polymer clay charms inside. Hope this helps xx

    • @panda31415
      @panda31415 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      That happens because the plasticizer (the stuff that makes clay moldable) in unbaked clay can pass on to certain plastics and make them softer and ‘melted’! It absorbs to the pvc and becomes non-reactive if baked correctly but I do agree with the other concerns of not being able to sanitize them completely, plastics leaching back out over years, not knowing how the manufacturers cured the clay, etc

    • @hyldrklein451
      @hyldrklein451 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Other than the clay itself used to make the cute little charms, you also have to think about the stuff that were used to color them which might be a whole different can of worms. So yeah, too much variables that might cause unknowns so better just not having them there. (Its not like they serve any other purpose than being aesthetic anyway)

    OK, I was not planning to comment this, but if you are doing this to sell in the future this might be useful. In general you should not rinse a sterilized item unless it is with fully sterilized water. Otherwise you reconteminate the item. Made that mistake and got scolded for it when I did lab work in uni. Love your videos.

    I can tell you that the LorAnn flavouring oils are sold for use in food like chocolates and candies, etc. They are highly concentrated compared to a flavour extract (like vanilla or almond extracts) and are oil based so they can be used in chocolate without causing it to seize, which water or alcohol based flavours will do. So they are definitely safe for your lips since they are intended to be consumed, but I know nothing about how they would interact with cosmetics ingredients. I know with food it takes very little to get the flavour and it’s very easy to overdo it with those bottles. I’m a home baker, but I’ve taken some baking, cake decorating, and chocolate workshops.

    At 5:22 - fun fact about sanitizing with rubbing alcohol! It’s counterintuitive, but 70% actually sanitizes better than 90%. This is because some water molecules need to be present in order for the alcohol to penetrate bacterial cell membranes. When I was taking microbiology, we always disinfected our lab benches with 70% alcohol for this reason.

    I would love it if you could somehow create lip gloss flavors and color combos based on your most popular soaps from your website and maybe figure out a way to make them smell similar to the actual soaps, if possible. I think that would be a fun idea because then people could have a lip safe match to the soap that they order! 🙂

    Katie, You are an absolutely AMAZING PERSON 👏!!!! I am always soooo happy to hear your explanations about safety, laws, regulations, and being transparent with your products. Too many tutorials ((I know this video was not a tutorial)) never touch the safety aspect. Which leaves me with the yucks about the health risks the crafters expose themselves, their family, and their friends and consumers to.
    Thanks for always looking out for others.
    Now, I think I may need to go to buy some lip gloss supplies... Not to sell... just for me.

    Love this and you, important to note that sterilization is not the same as sanitization, which is not the same as clean. I love your method, but sterile would require an autoclave, which is suited for surgery but would be overkill for this application.

  • @jennaheiser625
    @jennaheiser625 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    As someone who worked in a factory that made cosmetics, I’ll say that you’re kind of right and kind of wrong about how sterile products are made. The products themselves typically include preservatives and other chemicals to prevent bacterial growth, but they’re made by people who are in hairnets and clean (usually) clothes coverings like coats or aprons, but not sterile gowns or suits. The cosmetics are then tested for microbes in a sterile hood by someone, again, in a hairnet and clean but not sterile clothes. The difference between clean and sterile is not usually something that’s well taught in general education. Medical and hard sciences probably get the best crash courses!

    Hey darlin, totally appreciate your cleanliness & just to save you some time should you decide to do this in the future Steramine is a no rinse sterilizer. They're actually completely nontoxic so the company says you don't even need gloves or goggles when using it & it can be used around pets & children BUT considering these little glosses will be used around people's mouths plus skin is very sensitive sometimes I don't blame you wanting to be extra safe

    Great video. However, it’s worth pointing out that there’s an important difference between sterilising, disinfecting and sanitising. All those “sterilising” steps were actually disinfecting. Sterilising is not really something that can be easily, safely done at home without either hazardous chemicals, or an autoclave.
