My experience with Sugarloaf is that it has a huge window of ripeness/perfection but you have to first get it to its “inflection point” of ripeness. I had 12 Sugarloaf this year and it is for me the greatest mango I have ever eaten and my taste run like most others with of course Sweet Tart and Lemon Zest and Lemon Meringue and Pineapple Pleasure floating around at the top of the list. Sugarloaf is just so damn mellow when it’s ripened to perfection. Mr Zill deserves a Nobel Prize for its creation and all the pleasure has has brought forth for us all!!!

Thanks for all the details! Evidently I had a little misinformation.

If 0-15 has been out since 2015, why is it a unnamed variety still, especially with such a positive review?

    • @TrulyTropical

      Plants just released.
Gary Zill has so many new varieties that many are still known by there position in the grove.

I only have two mango trees and they are both in your video. Fruit Cocktail and Creme Brûlée. What are the odds 😂 I guess when my Fruit Cocktail gets larger I will have to find some Pina Colada to top work onto it.

Great video! Do you think the sugar loaf was actually under ripe? The one we had was outstanding - like pineapple pleasure but even sweeter, with a great, soft texture. The Fruit Cocktail we tried tasted like the juice from fruit cocktail.

Sounds like it was under ripe to me too. Interesting that Gary would suggest it being eaten even less ripe. I let the ones I ate get nice and soft and they were without a doubt the best tasting mangoes I've ever had. Maybe Sugar Loaf is a little finicky to get just right; with some preferring it more green than others. Most people I've talked to that have tried them have raved about them. Did hear a couple mixed reviews but I think those just weren't the best fruit the variety had to offer.

Let me say straight up. The Sugarloaf stays green no matter how long you let it sit.
My taste buds must be exactly like the guy from Sulcata because my analysis of what he said is 1000% exactly the same. As we all know and as Chris mentioned every taste testing must be taken with a grain of salt because you can’t catch every mango at its peak. In the case of Sugarloaf it really has no other way to tell if it’s perfect other than touch. Gary Zill pulled a very soft one out of the box for me to taste and gave me a slice about 3 weeks ago I had my first one on July 3rd. My reaction was equal in intensity to my first Pineapple Pleasure. My eyes lit up. It was mango nirvana. I had the same intense emotional reaction to Pineapple Pleasure. Sugarloaf is the greatest mango I have ever eaten. I brought a dozen home. July 4th I did a taste test at my daughter’s BBQ. 6 adults were there with 12 varieties and 2 picked Coconut Cream as their favorite and 4 picked Sugarloaf. To me it tastes like the inside of the creamiest pie filling with a medium mango flavor. This is a mango I will never get tired of eating. And it’s sort of greenish inside. Not yellow or orange but a yellow-green color. Yours was definitely under ripe as there is no tartness in a Sugarloaf. Mr Zill was hesitant to reproduce the trees for others because it always stays green and the only way to tell if it’s ripe is by touch but thank goodness enough of us convinced him to start replicating it. If you ripen one perfectly your hands will shake because for many a Sugarloaf is as close to G-d that they will ever get!!!!
      Chris.......see you Monday.

One more thing. Since it stays green Sugarloaf will be the best tree to plant if you have to plant near the street because who will want to steal a green fruit.

When are you getting an Australian Kensington Pride Mango?

Separating the fruit by acid, sub-acid,and sweet is for myself easiest to understand using the 'one food at a meal is the ideal' rule.

I never knew there were so many varieties of mangoes around.
All I have eaten came from the grocery store.
Is there a way I can purchase a variety case of mangoes?
I would love to taste a real flavorful mango.
    Awesome video👍

The variety of mangos available is amazing! We generally don't ship mangos. But you might try Ensey's when it's mango season (June-August). enseytropicalfruit.com

Do you usually wait until there is a demand for a mango Chris? It is tough to guess at which one will appeal to the public, most of the time, the general public just don't know anything or have the worst taste. I guess though, your customers are not the run of the mill grocery store mango shoppers. They go to you because they know you have different special varieties.

    • @TrulyTropical
      @TrulyTropical  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

We usually grow varieties that we think are exceptional. Of course there are exceptions... Valcarrie is a variety that others LOVE but that my family doesn't appreciate.
If a variety isn't popular, we top work the tree to another variety.
