Rick, you should rent or buy a laser so you know everything is level for the building. Good for you doing your best to live right. Have to hand it to you for caring about your mom and wanting to make her proud. We only get one set of parents in this life and only one go around so we have to do the best we can. Hats of to you!

    Rick,
I'm a Ford guy and I agree, that 78 Ranchero is hideous. Don't feel bad, after about 1974 they were ugly even when they were brand new.
Congrats on the new building. Finally! Can't wait for the build videos and to see the finished product.
To paraphrase Jeff Foxworthy, " If you've ever mowed your lawn and found a car (or 7), you might be...". LOL.
I'm really happy for You and Jamie, and Annabella of course.

Rick make sure you install a vapor barrier before you pour the cement floor. My cement man pulled mine out and now it turns into a lake inside my shop. I have to keep a dehumidifier running 24 hours a day to keep it dry. Also figure out where you might install lifts in the future and pour 6 inches of cement there. Have fun I will be watching.

Hey Rick, congrats on the new Kubota, as well as not smoking for 4 months! I'm pushing 4 years smoke free myself. Quitting was one of the best things I've done for myself. Keep up the great work, I appreciate the content you put out there, from one classic Chevy guy to another! I know how hard it is to let some go myself, I mean, I still own and drive a 1966 Chevy Sportvan that I've had since high school (12 years and counting) - it's been more reliable than most people! Despite owning modern vehicles and a few classics ranging from a custom 1970 Chevelle 454 SS cowl induction w/ 650hp 572ci Brodix and a 1970 Citroën DS Safari, I just can't sell the old van! Keep the ones you love and don't let anyone shame you for it, they're yours to do as you please with. Thanks for doing what you do! -Nick out in Astoria, OR.

Nice locations for the new shop Rick. I would recommend you remove the tree stump and root ball. If the stump is left it will give you troubles. Don't worry to much about all of the feeder roots. I think you are planning to remove all top soil, but just in case, some people don't realize this is an important 1st step. If you have access to that little back hoe (one used to dig the trench) digging up that stump will be a 15 min. job. But your new tractor can get the job done as well. Look forward to your new shop build.

Rick, on the '72 Chevy 4x4. Chevy never built a 1 ton 4x4 in '72. So I'd say it's a cobbled up 3/4 ton that someone may have put a 1 ton rear end in. If you weren't so far away, I'd be interested in it. Good luck with the new building. Always fun getting a nice shop to work & store things in. Enjoyed the video !

I was raised on a farm in northwest Ohio and I bleed Persian Orange a.k.a. A/C Orange! I don't farm but I have our old D-17 and our 7080 in my shop now. When I saw your WD and Kubota bucket to bucket I couldn't help but think about Doc Hudson and Lightning McQueen in the first Cars movie. WD probably said to Kubota "You've got a lot of stuff kid, but, you've got a lot to learn!'. Also, I'm not real religious, but, I do believe and pray every day. Anyone that considers themself a Christian wouldn't judge you for your actions.

Congrats on quittin smokin...had my last one ten years ago...cold turkey...no qualms at all...feel GREAT!!!!@64 YEARS YOUNG!!!!! Congrats on the new building...gonna be one FINE addition to the ranch.
You should think about puttin some heating tubes in the slab if you are gonna pour a slab. Even if you don't put in floor heat right away, you can't go back and put it in later if you do decide on it down the road. A friend hooked his up last winter and no more layin on a frozen floor. Tubes laid in there ten years ago and hooked it up and worked like a charm with wood heat...cheap like borsht :)
Hey if you get complaints about too much face time for the little dog,,,I WILL NEVER COMPLAIN!!!!!! she's a superstar inspector general and she needs her regular close ups (and we need to see them too!!)

That tree.....kinda needs to be removed, roots & all . Being as the ground heaves during the winter, then summer it drops back to where it belongs. Talk to the company your going to use for the cement work . Punkin....who (which company) made that BIG 6-banger ? If memory serves me right, GMC 292 6-cylinder ? That ought to be the motor (torque beast) that ya use . Take care ya'll ! ! !

Rick. I hate to be he bearer of bad news. But-- the tree stump has to come out in order to pour concrete there. Otherwise, it will rot under ground and form a "stump hole" equal to its size. The floor above would likely crack and possibly cave in over it eventually. As an old woodsman, I have past experience with stump holes. Have had them open up and swallow the wheels of my trucks, while driving through wooded areas to reach good timber. They often cover over with sod about 6 inches deep. I've fallen into some up to my knees. You will also need to pack the fill dirt you use in the hole. Natural settlement of the earth will not be solid enough to support a load over it. Good luck. Enjoy watching you and the wife as things progress. And, Anabella is just too precious for words.

Rick, I can tell you about my experience with tree stumps. My house was built 20 years ago and when the lawn was put in the stumps were covered over at ground level. Now that the stumps are rotting I have random sink hole appearing. Congrats on quitting smoking, keep your eye on the prize! I've been 16 months quit and still have moments when I think... "Man I really want a cigarette"! Wish I never saw a cigarette.

Hi Rick you know about the old trick getting 2 landmarks exactly in level with each other ?
Using a (or several connected) gardenhose(s) with a clear sightglass (plasticbottle etc.) fitted each end, fill up with water from either end, and the end's water surfaces will be exactly level.
The water levels each end can be set off on a stick and now you have an exact level marking over as long a distance you want it.

But anyhow That McCormick - Farmall OS-4 you where mentioning are Extremely rare and worth restoring Since well here in Michigan and other Fruity states are quite common for lots of collectors... I wouldn't doubt restored that'd bring over $14,000... I believe only around 2,000 made from the 1950s that is.. now im not sure how many left maybe a couple hundred..

Rick use 3-4-5 or 30-40-50 ft method to square pad foundation. Also we made a pole truck out of an old Tow truck. Weld three well pipes off back 20 ft up ten off back Run cable through top . Use truck to set trusses. We did this before we got a crane or Lull. Handy to have a lift truck. Ford would do it. Cool videos thanks.

My Allis WD 45 has had a bad head gasket for years it doesn't leak into the oil just on the outside of the engine. That’s going to be one nice building can’t wait to see it coming along. Do you have a box blade? A box blade with the front end loader on the Kubota will make quick work of the foundation, And a grapple bucket on the front end is really nice for brush clearing.

I don't have the time or money for any more projects. But, I prefer the style of any Ranchero from 1968-1979. My favorite is Seventh Generation 1977-1979. I'm more about what's practical anymore. With a family of 4 anything that can't seat us all legally is a no go for me.
I stumbled into an '88 Super Duty 7.3 a couple years back that was to affordable to pass up. I beat myself up over that all of the time but, wanted a reliable dozer tower. It's a backdoor love of my life. Even if I come across a much newer crew cab that's more practical I have trouble letting go of the rigs that never die.

We cleared a woods some years back and the best way we found for taking a tree down was to cut away the roots with the bulldozer blade and then push it over. That way you are using the whole mass of the tree to dislodge the stump. Early attempts to remove the stumps with explosives did not work well at all! Some trees will sprout again from the roots and it's best to hit the root ends with Roundup.

Love the show! Just caught your comment about not really being able to film everything. It would be AWESOME if you took the gopro that you will soon mount on Gopher in episode 109, and set it up in the same spot every morning on the most energy efficient settings. You could have an awesome time lapse video of the whole build. I'd love to see you do a garden video, too! Hoping you get some time to put one in this year, and a big one after you get your fences up!

Oh, and having a couple old tractors around will really prove useful if you really start working that land! You will find the Farmall to be a mighty useful row crop tractor and the WD will pull a triple bottom plow no sweat. Best of luck to you both :)

Move the building over 20 feet and leave the tree, A little shade is a nice spot to work in the summer.

After cutting the tree down, dig some of the dirt out from around the tree stump. Then start having some camp fires every night on top of the stump and just keep burning it out until the roots are mostly gone. Works every time.

And what you need to do Rick is go get a burn permit from your local County Office pile all that crap up all the bushes trees and limbs and do a control burn that will save you from having to go take it to the dump

I'm excited to see the building series .
You're going to have to remove that tree and root system . The foundation is the most important part of any build. Don't cut any corners there.

Rick when you take the tree down you should get as much of the root ball as you can out of the ground it will rot under the concrete and can crack it after a while most people grind the stump

On your tree you should not have a problem with the roots after you cut it down. But for the cost I would have the stump ground out. Around here that only runs around 100.00 to 150.00.
