I love your thirst for knowledge and your wiliness to share it. You are blessed with high energy and a great deal of enthusiasm. You make your "work" a joyful experience. You are blessed.
When the ARRI skypanel S60-C came out a few years ago, our production was the first to rent it out. We were working on a car commercial and we were filming the final “hero shot”. The skypanel dropped, it broke, it was bad. I’m glad I was a just an AC on that shoot 😂
Another great modifier I love using is a china ball. Works great for a direct to camera shot, interview where you want to light 2 people with 1 light, and especially group shots where the talent is sitting in a circle. Think coffee shop conversation or poker game on a card table. I loved that idea of using the sun as the rim light with a bounce to fill the subjects face, that's one I've never done before but plan on using in the future, super smart!
...Mr. Jet, may I call you Potato? That was actually a great intro to lighting. THINKING about light and LOOKING is the first step to being a pro. Even when you’ve got your equipment your main tool is still your mind. Thanks.
Can't wait for that M50 vs EOS R video. Both of those cameras look great. I want an M50. I think it'd work very well for me when I do wedding videos, and my TH-cam videos. I'm actually working on rearranging some stuff in my house to have a dedicated set. And I'll be spending more time on my videos, as I want to make them look as professional as possible. So this lighting video was very useful! Thanks, PotatoJet! :)
okay okay okay... im convinced... after spending two days researching for my new youtube channel you´ve been the most entertaining/helpful.. I´ll subscribe.
You know what a good one is "book lighting". Shoot that light against a white bounce board, then through some defusion to hit your target it usually produces some major defused light. Nice and "Charmin Soft" lighting haha
super useful. i’ve used 2 and 3 lights in photography set ups but that’s unrealistically expensive for personal work so really nice to see how far you can go with 33% of the equipment to hand.
Amusingly, one of the most interesting parts of this video is when you show how you can change a goofy guy flailing in front of the camera into a shot from a music video using lights and some smoke (and probably some good grading too). Thanks for the awesome video.
Such amazing concepts to lighting... I finally understand who a gaffer is on set. Im definitely going to practice lighting techniques... once I get lights...
Great video! I’m an old timer and just getting used to inexpensive led lights. I’m lusting after a kit of the 120 COB-one thing I miss about tungsten fresnels and open face lights is the control and versatility. Let me leave you with a thought of the day. If cinematography is painting with light, the grips and electricians are the cinematographer’s paint brushes.
With the overhead lighting, if you add a reflector underneath you can get some cool catch lights on the bottom of the eye, which in my opinion is better than just dark eyes.
Bro! Thank you so much for your hard work!! Your dialogue in the videos are like social network or the steve job movie were is engaging from start to finish!! Thanks for your dedication its really amazing!!
I love this video I’ve watched it maybe 20 times I use it as a reference to refresh my memory in lighting, I’ve been trying to do interview style videos for funny segments I want to create for my videos and some for couples videos for after the wedding discussions
Man these videos with professionals you've been making recently (this and the microphone one with the audio engineer) are crazy helpful for an indie filmmaker. Thank you.
💡I love how clearly, simply, and practically you explain these things. I’ve got a client project coming up this weekend, and I’ll experience the with a few of these techniques!
Dude, that was so informative! I'm a lighting expert in CG and I learned a lot from these real life practical examples. Kudos! Your channel is leveling UP! 😎🤘
+Potato Jet, excellent video. I like the size of the reflector in this vid. I'm looking for a 5-in-1 reflector that size. What's the brand and size? Thank you.
Proper lighting makes a HUGE difference. I improved the lighting in my videos and people thought I upgraded my camera, still using Logitech C920 but Canon M50 is on the way, can't wait! :D
The 120d is definitely the one light people should get. The cheap leds are fine but the 120d is so much better and worth the extra. I can't wait for the M50 speed booster video. I'm looking to get a 50mm and speedbooster for my M50. Paired with my adapter I will have many more options for video and photography.
hey, that's actually what i use. 2 desk lamps with G&E 5000k led bulbs and some toilet paper draped in front of the lamp fixture to make a very crude "soft box" haha.
this is litterly this tutorial. just to the same thing with your desktop lamp and use a "floppy" lol. If you can not affort that either, use paper as a reflector. Maybe you could even use baking paper to soften your desktop light? Now I'm just thinking out loud haha but you get the point tho it's actually possible
@@Promiscubus I took clamp on work light fixtures and put LED bulbs in them and wrapped white plastic bags around them then clamp them on microphone stands.
PJ, I think this is the next great up and coming video gear vlog! Excellent work, super engaging, and useful content. I'm getting a lot of great info too! Keep going! Please about sliders vs. gimbals vs. any other camera movement platform!
The bounce: Great tool to have! Id suggest you go for a larger one than you think you might need. The issues with smaller bouncers is the lack of softening and direction on the light. Always have one in your bag and you can forego the second or third light source if you're creative.
This must be the best Lighting Setup video on youtube, or I havent seen them all. Love your happy funny way to teach all about video lighting!! Great job guys!!! Damn you're good!
I haven’t looked at all your videos, yet, but I really hope there is one on how to talk on camera like you do. This is helpful and funny stuff. Thank you!
Prolly the most informative easy to digest for lighting Video for ADHD ppl like myself. Explaining by showing and examples. Dude, lighting has always been intimidating for me, I am now very keen to get out there and experiment with it. Bottom line, Thanks to you and Eric
De-light-ful video! As always! :)
Dephi TV abahahabahahahahahahahahhahahahahaha
I see what u did there 🙄👏🏼
That tip about the gaff tape on the ears is genius. 12:42. Never seen that before. Great knowledge in this video honestly. Potato Jet is Goat
This video is just insane. Because I know some people paid hella $$$$ to learn this at college, or on some course. THANKS SO MUCH!
This barely scratches the surface of what you can learn in film school
Thanks for elucidating in a transparent way! I’ve seen several lighting videos and books on lighting but these examples were really fun and clear cut
I love your thirst for knowledge and your wiliness to share it. You are blessed with high energy and a great deal of enthusiasm. You make your "work" a joyful experience. You are blessed.
I learned more in 17 minutes here than I did in 2 years of film/photo school a while ago. Thank you.

Sir 😍😍😍😍😍😍
I can't believe I get to see this carefully made, invaluable content for free. Thank you one million times.
Love the channel all those ladders are adding *UP*
That's a ton of stuff to play with. Very well done and super condensed. Thx a mill.
Dude, you are the best, the way you do the tutorials with humor, they are so nice to watch... that is your differential, keep doing.

Wow the dithering on that Red is crazy. So much banding.
3:20 he seems like the most calm and composed guy and then he actually mentions how it's important you should stay calm and composed. Makes sense
Excellent explanation of these techniques.

Thankyou for this! It's amazing what results you can get with just a single light !
I like the tape on the ear tip. Never thought of it even though it is so simple.
Love how you can take fairly complex subjects and make them accessible and easy. Good job!
Thank you SO MUCH! Literally writing every angle down in our notebook to try out in the field! Potato Jet, your content is GOLD!
These videos should be more common. Light is the most important thing when you're shooting something. Thanks Potato!
super useful. i’ve used 2 and 3 lights in photography set ups but that’s unrealistically expensive for personal work so really nice to see how far you can go with 33% of the equipment to hand.
I love film nerds and this guy is one of the best on YT. I always pick up new stuff or am reminded of stuff learned many years ago.
Amusingly, one of the most interesting parts of this video is when you show how you can change a goofy guy flailing in front of the camera into a shot from a music video using lights and some smoke (and probably some good grading too).
Thanks for the awesome video.
Love your energy. I can watch your videos all day.

This was great! A lot of wisdom here. Thanks!

This is by far my favorite video by Potato Jet. Thanks!!! I'm going to rewatch a bunch of times to remember all this info!!!
Hey, Gene can you please do more of these styles of videos, I am a filming student and I find these videos most valuable. Thanks
I love this video I’ve watched it maybe 20 times I use it as a reference to refresh my memory in lighting, I’ve been trying to do interview style videos for funny segments I want to create for my videos and some for couples videos for after the wedding discussions
i just love your videos... there is no other better filmmaking channel on this youtube world!
You should do a "Hollywood Secrets revealed, starring Russel from UP"
Man these videos with professionals you've been making recently (this and the microphone one with the audio engineer) are crazy helpful for an indie filmmaker. Thank you.
unlike all the other youtubers you always find the amazing and very knowledgeable contents
💡I love how clearly, simply, and practically you explain these things. I’ve got a client project coming up this weekend, and I’ll experience the with a few of these techniques!

thats honestly one of the best explanations on lighting that i ever found!
Super helpful! This is exactly what I needed to learn, thanks Potato Jet! Keep being awesome
As a total amateur this is priceless. Thanks for the great content.
Awesome stuff man! Gaffing is the most underrated part of all of this. It's also so confusing for beginners, so it's great seeing some of that!
Awesome. I love the idea of getting super creative with one light and a reflector. Dead efficient, Jet

Great video Gene, I learned a lot. Your videos always put a smile on my face as I learn.
Nice pro tips in this. Like the c-stand rule. Been to too many sets where this was exactly a problem...
Light is the most important for a good image, thank you for focusing on this topic.
Hi, the funny thing about that video is it's about lighting but I really dig the sound. Good job buddy !!!
Potato jet never ransout of energy. And the humor is on point.
This is great! I wish I found more videos about semi-professional lighting.
Great tips! Makes me want to photograph my dogs with some dramatic lighting
DUDE this is so dope, I actually made a modifier to attach to that 7 inch dish, it lets you put gels and diffusers on with ZERO time wasted
More real world lighting Tutorials are Totally Welcome if you ask me. Thanks again and best to you bud.

This must be the best Lighting Setup video on youtube, or I havent seen them all. Love your happy funny way to teach all about video lighting!! Great job guys!!! Damn you're good!
You have become one of my fave TH-camr. Love the vibe and the abrupt ending.
Lighting is so important! Good en-lighten-ment :)
Dude, you’re the funniest. Even though I love the content, I basically keep watching for your personality.
Keep up!
My first thought (floppy) was the old computer floppy disk. Remember those... Love your videos!
I literally would have paid tons of money for this video. Thank you so much! Such valuable content
You light UP our whole world.
I haven’t looked at all your videos, yet, but I really hope there is one on how to talk on camera like you do. This is helpful and funny stuff. Thank you!

Loved the different looks that you can get with just one light! Thanks for the insightful video, cheers Jimmy
Thanks Matt for looking out for us and letting us know before we make the wrong move :) keep these videos coming
Your videos are awesome. Thanks for making free videos here on TH-cam and not making movies where we have to buy $15 popcorn just to watch it.
Okay... Yep u right it should be called a floppy! I love it!
This is the basics. But fundamentals are where its at. Great vid.
Learned so much!! Thank you so much Potato Jet!
Loved it...great info delivered in a very entertaining way. How about another one adding one more accent light?
I am really impressed with the techniques
when the ending of this old video is what most people want to talk about in 2020
wow yes! 😬
More info on lighting Jet! Love to see more on finding a budget friendly 3 lighting setup with LEDs/continuous lights.

It’s always an absolute pleasure watching and learning from your vids. Thank you 🙏🏽
