    Many people put a citrus element in the hot buttered rum--a splash of lemon juice or a twist of orange peel. And a good eggnog has more than rum, usually a combination of rum, brandy and bourbon or whiskey. A Pink Lady tastes better than a Tom & Jerry IMO--same idea with whipped egg whites but with gin and applejack and grenadine, more festive.

    We get Hot Buttered Rum in Scotland, there's also a version made with whisky sometimes called Hot Butterscotch or a Highland Cow but most of the time just called a Butter Toddy. The version I've had is made with whisky, butter, milk, honey, an egg yolk and then topped with nutmeg.

    This was a fun article to watch. Nice to see people try our stuff and express an opinion. Really wish they had used real Eggnog which is a nice blend of Rum, Whiskey and Brandy plus the Egg Nog mix, a number of companies in the stats put out a proper mix around Thanksgiving to Christmas. The Hot buttered Rum recipe my family has is a mix of melted Vanilla Ice Cream, Butter mixed with brown sugar then after blended combined with both dark rum and hot water. The others well haven't really tried them myself.

      Hot buttered rum is still alive and well in the southern united states. At least in the part where I live. Lol. So is eggnog and rum. Champagne cocktails are timeless. Only one I never see is the Tom and Jerry.

    • @michaelheath2866
      @michaelheath2866 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah the other fellow is right. These are all still drunk in many places in the U.S. Some more than others, and the exact ingredients may vary a little but these are basically variations of some common drinks. A lot of people just buy a carton of eggnog, add booze and bam Xmas, but for the rest of us that actually fully celebrate the holiday, we have drinks like these at Christmas parties. Champagne cocktails are a common drink in wait for it...cocktail lounges. I'm not accusing you of anything nor am I trying to be insulting, but basically there's a dichotomy in America between people who still celebrate Christmas quite like we've always done, and people who don't really have a lot of American traditions maybe because of their backgrounds, and they're the ones I often see going "Oh that's not true, it's from movies". It ended up in movies, guess where it came from before that? America.

    It's interesting to me that in a lot of these videos where they eat or drink American stuff, I've never heard of or consumed most of the things shown, and I've been an American for all 32 years of my life. I'm American and the only one I've ever heard of is the eggnog, so this was educational for me. :) And the eggnog to alcohol ratio in my experience has always been more eggnog to a shot of alcohol (usually rum, but my family has always used whiskey, so that's what I'm used to).

  • @TrueMeridian
    @TrueMeridian 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey, here's a tip:
    If you want to get peaks out of egg whites, start with eggs at room temperature. Also, add ⍊1 tsp of white vinegar (you'll never taste the vinegar, but will end up with nice, stiff peaks).

  • @SerenaPro

    Most common Christmas drinks in my family: Mulled wine, eggnog, spiked coffee, cider, or hot toddy. Although, when I'm sick I make a hot toddy regardless of the season. :D I'm gonna have to start making hot buttered rum now. Damn

  • @Longrangetargets

    It's usually either wine or beer...or both. This stuff is made by someone's grandmother who tries to get everyone to try it once and they do and then back to wine or beer...or both. But not on Christmas day, only Christmas eve...usually.

  • @fartzinwind
    @fartzinwind 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    For anyone who isn't familiar with Eggnog. I don't know many American families that finish a carton of the stuff, because it is so thick. Unless you share it with a lot of people, it's just too rich to have more than a single tumbler or two worth a year. If you tried to get drunk off Rumnog, you would be full and sick before you got drunk. Also, Southern Comfort has the best spiced Eggnog (non-alcoholic), and adding Southern Comfort booze too it is better than normal Eggnog with just Rum.

    I take it icing sugar is the same as powdered sugar/confectioner's sugar?

    I live in Pennsylvania and I've never heard of these! Along with most of the candy, chips, foods and such that are on here.. maybe it's because my fam is all Irish.

    Not exactly a Christmas cocktail (I associate it with Mardi Gras) but brandy milk punch is pretty decent for cold weather especially aka Christmas time

    In my experience, americans love eggs. Eggs and bacon. Bacon is especially popular. Also, potatoes. Lots of potatoes.

    I don't bother the store-bought eggnog which never tastes right. I use my Welsh grandfather's recipe which uses Kentucky Bourbon. I also add a variation of my own to it sometimes: 2 parts Bourbon, 1 part Rum, and 1 part Brandy.

    So do you think I could make hot buttered whisky? I really prefer whisky. I bet it would be just as good! But I don't know. Maybe I'll do both and taste test

    Lucky them, they didn't try a Candy Cane Cocktail (*shiver**wretch*)
    Vanilla White Rum
    Canadian Whiskey (Usually something higher shelf like Crown Royal)
    Peppermint Schnapps
    Cream
    Milk
    a small drop of pure Maple Syrup
    Strawberry Extract
    Cinnamon
    Crushed Ice, just enough to fill the top of the drink.
    Sometimes garnished with a powdered candy cane stuck to the rim like a salt ring. Couldn't find the exact recipe but it is supposed to be French Canadian in origin. All I know is you mix the flavours in the cream and the alcohols with the milk, blend them together, chill, and then add the ice right before serving.
    To me it tasted like Christmas went to war in my mouth.
    The virgin one is supposedly so strong almost everyone cuts it with milk AND water.
