  • Created by Edward Chavez of Texas, the LRRC is a nymph-like soft hackle and is the second original pattern submitted by users in our "All Ringneck Pheasant Skin" series. It can be fished on a dead drift or swung as a standard wet fly.
    Hook: #10-14 2x long nymph or wet
    Thread: Black 70 denier
    Tail: Golden brown shoulder feather fibers
    Body: Sow scud rainbow dubbing (or rainbow ice dub mix)
    Rib: Red wire, small to medium
    Hackle: Golden brown shoulder feather, wrapped as a collar
    Savage Flies is a project with the mission of encouraging and teaching fly tying to as many people as possible. The channel is named after one of my western Maryland homewaters, the Savage River. I've been uploading at least three new videos a week (usually Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday).
    Thanks for stopping by. Please let me know in the comments if you have any tying tips you would like to share or if you have any patterns you would like to see tied here.

      Thanks Debora! I'm trying to solicit ten flies for this series so we'll see what I get. They might not all have an interesting history-- sometimes we just tie something that we think will catch fish, and then try to think up a fun name. But you never know. :-)

    Similar to What I've been calling a "3- Way Fly" for years.
    When I first started tying I didn't know all the names, or types of flies .
    But I knew a fly like this had a tail, a body, and a hackle. These three elements together I called a, "Three Way Fly."
    Materials weren't specific to a 3-Way - whatever would work.
    Pheasant has been a favorite material since I first read about Jack Gartides love for the pheasant.
    And I, too, favor a long hackle.
    Great "3- Way" fly Edward, and thanks for sharing your memories.

      @SavageFlies  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      David- I love this story! And I think a "Three Way Fly" is a great name. I might start using it as a general category of fly. For example, I could call my purple squirrel (which I never really gave a name), a simple 3-Way Nymph. Tail, body, hackle. That's it. And the same thing for a 3-Way Dry. Tail, body, hackle. I love this concept. So simple.
      I might have to steal this idea! (I'll credit you of course.) Thanks for the note my friend.
      Cheers,
      Matt

      @@SavageFlies Feel free. I like that it might help sort things out.
      funny story - when I first saw a Hidy, "flymph," I exclaimed , "Hey, that's a 3-Way Fly. I wonder if he knows?"
      Hahahaha!
      PS I have found that the extra long hackle, a la, "The Carey Special," is a killer.

      @SavageFlies  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dahutful That is funny. I'll bet if Pete Hidy thought of calling them 3-way flies way back then, we might be calling them that today. Didn't he have a pretty popular book on wet flies and flymphs? I don't have anything by him... gonna have to do some research! (PS: are you upstate or coastal? I went to school in Charleston. Not a lot of trout water in the low country!)

    • @dahutful
      @dahutful 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SavageFlies Hidy had a booklet of only 100 copies - a very rare thing today.
      James Leisenring, had a book called The "Art of Tying The Wet Fly," which was prompted by Hidy - who helped co-write.
      The two men, together, are synonymous with the Flymph.

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've read a few chapters of other authors talking about Leisenring, and seen mention of Hidy in some Dave Hughes books. But interesting to hear this bit of history of only 100 copies. Thanks for sharing!

      Russell- I've never fished in Boone itself, but I have fished the South Holston and it's a solid river. There are plenty of others around. Check out Boone's Fly Shop. You could either stop in or check their website: boonesflyshop.com/fish-we-catch/. And you're not a long drive from the Great Smoky Mountains. Plenty of streams in the park that would be worth a day trip! Good luck!
